Aaraam hai haraam

Posted on: December 10, 2010

It may be difficult to imagine today, but Indians actually idolised national leaders in the past. Till 1960s,every Indian household would have framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi (father of the nation), Jawaharlal Nehru (Prime Minister of India) and Rajendra Prasad (President of India) hanging on the walls of their drawing rooms. In addition, people would also have photographs of Subhash Chandra Bose, Vallabh Bhai Patel etc too.

People also took the speeches of the leaders seriously. Those were the days when India was busy in nation building in the right earnest. Jawaharlal Nehru, the architect of nation building, had given a slogan- “Aaraam Haraam Hai”, viz “It is a sin to relax”.

This slogan kept getting used till 1970s.

The messages of national leaders were depicted in several movies of those days. In fact, there were movies which were based on the message of nation building. Many songs were created that exhorted to live upto the messages of the leaders.

Here is a song from “Apna Ghar” (1960) which is inspired from Jawaharlal Nehru’s “Aaraam Haraam Hai” slogan.

This stage song, which school kids perform in a function in their school,is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi.I can identify Nanda as the actress lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice, but I am unable to identify the actor lip syncing in Rafi’s voice. I request my knowledgeable readers to help in identifying him.

PS-The actor is Moti Sagar. I thank Prakash Chandra for this identification.

The picturisation also shows the photographs of national leaders. It is curious to know that the picture of Indira Gandhi is shownb quite prominently in this picturisation, though she was yet to become Prime minister at that time and no one, including hersel;f , could have guessed at that time that she was going to become PM. The reason why she is shown so prominently in the pcturisation may be because she was the Information and Broadcasting Minister at that time and so the movie makers of this movie were perhaps trying to curry favour with her.

The song is written by Prem Dhawan and music is composed by Ravi.

milkar haath bataao tabhi ye ho sakte hain poore

aao ek ho jaao
aaa aaa aaa
is desh ko swarg banaao
aaaa aaa aaa

bhaarat kaa ho is duniyaa mein
sabse oonchaa naam
aaraam hai haraam
aaraam hai haraam

jaat-paat ke bandhan todo
oonch-neech ko chhodo

kabhi kisi ke aage
apni jholi na phailaanaa

Name of the male actor is Late”MOTI SAGAR”, he is the father of famous singer Preethi saagar(“My heart is beating” fame-Julie)

He is there in Motilal`s Choti choti baatein(1965),Malhar(1951-in this film playback singer mukesh acted I think, Mukesh himself is the producer).

He is related to Ramanand sagar(famous hindi film & t.v.serial director). He is associated with the films produced by ramananda sagar.

Further, he had famous cousins like Motilal, Mukesh(-chand mathur-the famous playback singer),Tara harish(hindi film director, who directed films like Nakli nawab, Kali topi laal rumal)

Atul,
sorry I just discovered that my piece of information about moti sagar, being a relative of ramanand sagar, may not be right, but all other information given by me, about moti sagar is correct.

ramanad sagar`s relative moti sagar is a altogether a different individual , from peethi sagar`s father” moti sagar”.

Of course,He is cousin of mukesh, motilal, tara harish.

sorry, I mislead you.

Nice song. Slipped off my horizon completely. Are you sure of the year it was made because it shows V.V. Giri receiving Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman which would make it more like an early 70’s song when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister which would also explain why Indira figured so prominently in unfurling the national flag.

Indira Gandhi was Minister of Information and Broadcasting from 1964 to 1966 ie, in Shastriji’s cabinet where as the movie was released much earlier in 1960.What prompted director to show her in this song is not known.
