Aaj sochaa to aansoo bhar aaye

“Hanste Zakhm” (1973) was, not surprisingly (in hindsight) , a commercial disaster. Chetan Anand, the maker of this movie, was so enamoured of Priya Rajwansh that she was the heroine of all his movies, despite her wooden face. No doubt she tried hard, as did others, to perform to the best of their abilities, but this movie had other weak points viz confused storyline, etc.
The one saving grace for this movie was its music. of course that was of little consolation to Madan Mohan, the music director, who found yet another movie studded with his gems going down the drain.
I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie in this blog. Here is the fifth masterclass. This song is sung by Lata. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. The musical team of Lata, Kaifi Azmi and Madan Mohan have excelled in this composition. There are many music lovers who believe that this song is better heard than watched,and one cannot blame them for their view. Hence I have included the the audio version of the song. The picturised version of the song is also included which shows Priya Rajwansh, Navin Nischol, K N Singh etc in this song.

Atul ji,
It is so true about the audio vs the filmed version of the song. So many times, on viewing a wonderful song, I wish I had not seen it. The actors, the picturization, the ambience, many a times all but kill the beauty of the song. It may be my bias. In my opnion, the appropriate handling and a convincing picturization of a song is probably the toughest part of making a film. And a very few directors are really able to do any justice.
Here I would like to add one more observation. It is a very personal experience, and I don’t know if others would agree. There are some songs that are simply superb when viewed in black and white. And as soon as one sees it in color, somehow the beauty of the song is diminished. From my childhood, I remember watching Chitrahaar and movies on Doordarshan. Color came in very late (I think it was in 1982 when color transmission started). We would see all the movies and songs in black and white, and as a child, I did not know that some of this material may actually be colored. B&W was beautiful. Then growing up and getting exposed to color television plus also the opportunity to watch more movies in the halls, I would sometimes be stupefied seeing a song in color, which I would have seen much earlier in b&w on TV. It would look so drab, and somehow the effect was watered down. A very specific example that I remember; the song “Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas Tum Rehti Ho” from the movie Blackmail. This is song is much more beautiful in b&w as compared to color. When I saw it a second time at a college screening, I couldn’t believe that the movie was in color, and this particular song looked ordinary, as compared to its b&w version on TV.
Just my own experience and feeling.

Watching a song in B & W and later in colour ! I never thought about that. Most people in India (not growing up in metros) saw TV for the first time only in 1980s and by that time colour had come to Indian TV (after 1982 Asiad). I agree that watching picturisation of songs in B & W has its own charm. Unlike you, I have watched most colour songs in colour since I watched them originally in colour. I think I shuld try watching coulour songs in B & W. Is there any software available to convert colour to B&W ? 🙂

I cannot think of a software that will convert a color video clip to b&w. But I do know that there are video players (both hw and sw) and also computer and TV monitors, where the color settings can be reduced such that the picture is displayed in b&w.

मुद्दते हो गयी मुस्कुराये …. जिंदगी की कड़वी सच्चाई को इतने मीठ्ठे, नाजुक और खुबसूरत लब्जों मे पिरोने का महारथ रखने वाले शायर ‘कैफी साहब’ को नमन ।
मदन, रईस खान, और लता जी के बेमिसाल सुरों को संजोये इस रचना का आज तक कोई तोड़ नही. जब भी सुनता हूं रो पड़ता हूं …. हकीकत और जिंदगी के हंस्ते जख्मों से रूबरू करवाती एक कालजयी, अमर-अजर रचना ।।

Hello Atul: I commend your candid assessment of the movie version of this song and it is a great idea to present both the video and audio versions. I love everything about the composition…from the enchanting sitar introduction to the enthralling guitar and sitar interludes…simply amazing. Thanks for posting.
