Bemurawwat bewafaa

Mention of the name Mubaarak Begum conjures up the image of a very unique mesmerizing voice in the mind; and many iconic songs pass through the memory banks
– kabhi tanhaayion mein yoon hamaari yaad aayegi
– neend udd jaaye teri chain se soney waale
– mujhko apne galey lagaa lo
– humen dum daike souten ghar jaana
– nigaahon se dil mein chale aayiegaa
– mere aansuon pe na muskuraa, kai khwaab thhe jo machal gaye
– hum haal-e-dil sunaayenge
– wo na aayenge palat kar”
and many more. Here is a voice that had the capacity to enthrall millions, and did; and yet this is another one of those talents that have been lost to obscurity, unable to break through the “system”.
Born in 1940 in Churu, Rajasthan, she was enchanted by movies even as a small child. She learnt music under the tutelage of Riyazuddin Khan. In early 50s her family moved to Bombay. She started to sing in Hindi movies as early as 1952 / 53. Her voice and her songs were recognized and most of the major music directors signed her on. But commercial successes were few and far between. As fate would have it, she was born into an era that already had established singers, and a system that was difficult to break through. She sang in the movies through the 60s, and then faded away.
(Currently she lives in a small flat in Jogeshwari, Mumbai. Her son makes a living driving a taxi, and she has a daughter suffering from Parkinson’s. A forgotten legend, she has now fallen on extremely hard times, living in penury trying to make ends meet).
This song is an iconic ghazal from the movie Sushila. Not much info is available about this movie, but thankfully the songs of this movie have not all been lost.
There is a wonderful Talat-Rafi duet Gham ki andheri raat mein that is already posted on this blog.
This ghazal is penned by Jaan Nissar Akhtar and the composition is by C Arjun. Only the audio of this song is available.
Enjoy this hugely memorable gift of poetry, in a voice that never fails to bring a thrill in the heart.
Song-Bemurawwat bewafaa (Susheelaa) (1966) Singer-Mubarak Begam, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-C Arjun
Lyrics
dard-e-dil dard-e-wafaa dard-e-tamannaa kyaa hai
aap kyaa jaane mohabbat ka taqaazaa kyaa hai
hoooooooooo
be-murawwat be-wafaa begaana-e-dil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa begaana-e-dil aap hain
aap maane ya na maane mere qaatil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa
aap se shiqwaa hai mujhko gair se shiqwaa nahin
aap se shiqwaa hai mujhko gair se shiqwaa nahin
jaanti hoon dil mein rakh lene ke qaabil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa
saans leti hoon to yoon mehsoos hota hai mujhe
saans leti hoon to yoon mehsoos hota hai mujhe
jaise mere dil ki har dhadkan mein shaamil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa
gham nahin jo laakh toofaanon se takraana padey
gham nahin jo laakh toofaanon se takraana padey
main wo kashti hoon ke jis kashti ka saahil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa begaana-e-dil aap hain
aap maane ya na maane mere qaatil aap hain
be-murawwat be-wafaa
