“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.
I just realised that I have discussed only two songs from this movie. All the songs of this movie need to be discussed here. The lyrics of this song have been sent by nahm. This song is sung by Rafi and Lata and it is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore.
This is a light and playful song, and this song is written by Gulzar. This could well be a teasing song, as far as I can guess.
Personally I am not able to understand much of what the lyricist has tried to say, but then Gulzar had his own ideas of what constituted a light playful song. The song, to my mind, is a sophisticated song , despite the light hearted nature of the song. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us what the lyrics of this song mean.
One can of course enjoy this song without understanding the meanings of the lyrics. And therein lies the beauty and charm of this song.

Most often a walking stick reminds me of the riddle of the Sphinx.
so, forget about man having three legs at later in the life.
Actually, the idea of having a cane in the hand means moving forward.
BUT If the neck is hold by J-Handle or T-Handle of the Cane, you can’t move forward.
so it’s like having the leg shackles so it’s hard to walk …but somehow one is unable to move this cane from the neck, so it’s like having a hand cuff too…

There are lots of people who find this song annoying, but I like it a lot. Yes, the lyrics sound lighthearted, sung like that, effortlessly by our Rafi and Lata.
Major crib about this song – they cut out a really nice stanza in the video – but the cassette in our house plays this:
Dheere dheere chalna sapne neendon mein darr jaate hain o o (2)
Kehte hain sapne kabhi jaage toh mar jaate hain

As for the meaning, I will await the interpretations of some really knowledgeable people here.

If the audio cassette has this additional stanza then it is quite possible that it was used in another part of the film. In the context of the film and the story, this third stanza is also nice. Thanks for providing the lyrics. Now only thing is we should find a audio/video link either on you tube or daily motion, to complete the song.

Nahm, to my great sorrow, this third stanza was not in the movie at any point, we watched it recently. Yes, I plan to look for the complete song, but am not feeling very optimistic.
