“Sohni Mahiwal”(1958), as the name suggests is one of the four tragic love stories of Punjab. The other such stories being Heer Ranjha,Mirza Sahiban and Sassi Punnun. Several movies have been made on these tales, not only in Hindi, but also in Punjabi and other languages.
The title roles in “Sohni Mahiwal” (1958) were played by Nimmi and Bharat Bhushan. That is perfect casting for a tragic love story, if you ask me. 😀
Here is a suitably melancholic song from this movie. This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.
This song is apparently the movie ending song as well. Just after Mahendra Kumar finishes his singing, a brief Rafi-Lata duet commences and ends almost immediately, with Sohni and Mahiwal shown walking purposefully towards a river holding hands, where, as the legend tells us, they got drowned. This Rafi Lata duet could well be treated as a separate song, but here I have considered it as an extension of the Mahendra Kapoor song

This is not Mahendra Kapoor debut song. He recorded his first song for V. Bulsara (as MD) film – Madmast (1953).

I absolutely love this song, and Mahendra Kapoor has done full justice to the composition and lyrics. However, I can’t help wondering why, after the tremendous success of Baiju Bawra songs, Naushad would pick Mahendra Kapoor for this song, instead of the great Rafi Saab? Does anyone have an answer?

Oh, I absolutely love this song, which I have been hearing from my childhood days, but never saw the video until today. I had guessed that they were both dead at the point when he sings, “sohni aur mahiwal ne apni ishq mein jaan ganwaayi …”, but this is beautifully filmed, with the river raging in its fury, and the tragic lovers being swept away by its waters. And yes, Nimmi and BB are the perfect pair for a tragedy – did either of them ever have a funny/happy movie?

This song was a long pending farmaish from you.
I have commented on the fact of Nimmi playing tragic roles all the time and I was accused of being anti woman for one such comment. I am happy that you too feel the same way about Nimmi’s roles. 😀

Lalitha ji / Atul ji,
In her entire career,Nimmi acted only in ONE comedy movie,that too in the fag end of her career.
Roop and Rang Chitra production DAAL MEIN KAALA (1964),directed by Satyen Bose (s/play also),the film cast was-
Kishore Kumar,Nimmi,Agha,Omprakash,Tun Tun,Maruti,Shammi,Bipin Gupta,Sajjan,Abhi Bhattacharya etc. The Music director was C.Ramchandra
The story was a comedy of errors.
Raibahaddur gets a letter that Dr.Prof. Roy is arriving from London for a seminar.By the same train (a train from London ? ) two unemployed youths Raju and Raja,as well as an actor Natwar Shyam are travelling,all in First class.
Raibahaddur mistakenly takes Raju as the Prof,The actual professor is received by people for actor Shyam and the actual actor,who is in a drunken state does not get down at all.
The entire story is full of this misunderstanding and Nimmi,playing daughter of Raibahaddur falls in love with Raju(Kishore kumar).
This last minute effort of Nimmi did not help her in removing the tag of Weeping Doll of Hindi films.
As far as Bharat Bhooshan is concerned,I think,the producer mandali knew his limitations of acting and no one ever offered him a comedy role.Some people are born with face suitable for tragic and serious roles only.
