Baje nagaade kaal ke

In olden days, whenever a King had to make any public announcement, he would sent a royal announcer who would go to a public place, namely a market or a square. He would have a drummer with a huge Nagaada (an Indian musical drum) with him. The nagaadaa player was called nagaadchi.
This Nagaada is not much used in Hindi movie music or even in classical music. Its main purpose those days was to beat it loudly to attract the attention of the public to the fact that an important announcement was to be made.
On those days when no Royal announcements were to be made, these nagada players were available for hire on personal functions like wedding ceremonies etc. even today, one may be able to hear nagaada beats in remote villages located far away from civilisation, although they too, like many other indegenous arts, may be facing the threat of extinction.
One can often see Nagaadaa in old mythological/historical movies, though the word nagaadaa itself rarely finds a mention in the lyrics. In 1980s, a Jeetendra movie did have a song that went “Nagaadaa Nagaadaa”. Some day I will discuss that song in this blog, even though that song is of rather a recent vintage and after the golden era of Hindi movie music.
Here is a song that actually mentions nagaadaa prominently. Here the nagaada is not for a royal announcement to the public, rather it is an announcement cum warning for the King from the gods. The divine nagaadaa is playing on its own while the gods warn the king to safeguard his throne because God is arriving in his kingdom.
This song with a powerful message is written by Pradeep. The song is sung wonderfully well and with great energy by Rafi. Music is composed by Avinash Vyas.
It is a fantastic song, which is not known to too many music lovers. the song needs to be brought to the attention of more music lovers. I too heard this song for the first time just a few hours ago.What a song !

The Batu-WAMAN is played by Trilok Kapoor.

with due respects to you,
I think the guy who plays WAMAN does not look like Trilok kapoor,
Trilok kapoor has more masculine and rugged features in his personality, a somewhat different set pattern of eyes. This guy who plays waman`s, doesnot look like trilok kapoor. I may be wrong, If I am wrong please correct me.
I have not seen the film , but while searching regarding the film, I fumbled upon IMDB.com which shows
Trilok Kapoor has played the role of Bhagwan vishnu and
the Waman`s role has been played by PRAVEEN KUMAR.
I don`t know who praveen kumar is, But I have seen Trilok kapoor in many mythological films and as Nutanji`s aged second husband in Rajshree productions SAUDAGAR(1973).

Prakash ji,
I have seen the movie.
Batu Waman was Bhagwan Vishnu’s Awatar.Vishnu takes the form of Waman,after the Gods start praying to him.That time Waman’s role is done by T.Kapoor.When he visits King Baliraj in his court,Praveen kumar has done the role as at the step taking he looks very big and muscular.Since Praveen Kumar was a noted Pahilwan those days he got the role for that body shape.Praveen kumar’s face and body was done small,for the scenes,by trick scenes(visual effects-in today’s lingo).
So,in a way you are also right.

Atul ji,
When we talk of Nagadaas or Nagaaras,one is reminded of the famous Nagaara Dance in India’s wonderfilm CHANDRALEKHA (1948).
In this costeliest film of those days(5 crores),there was a NAGAARA DANCE on which the Heroine dances.
For this most extravagant scene,gigantic sized drums were made and the dance music was a combination of Idian classical,South Indian,South American and Viennese waltz music.500 dancers danced on these drums and at the end of the song,soldiers hidden in the drums came out and attack(a la Helen of Troy style).
The film was simuteneously made in Tamil and Hindi and won many International awards for S.S.Wassan,the Producer/Director.
