Banaane waale ne rupaiyya bhaiyya gol kyun banaayaa

Posted on: August 28, 2011

There have been two movies called “Sabse Bada Rupaiyya”. I was personally familiar with the Mehmood movie that was released in 1976. But the earlier movie with the same title was released in 1955.

This earlier movie, namely “Sabse Bada Rupaiyya” (1955) was directed by P L Santoshi. Very little (and that too incorrect) information is floating about on internet about this movie. I do not believe any of those information, so seeing (and hearing) is believing for me as far as I am concerned.

Here is this rare song from this movie. This fun song is sung by Balbir and Asha Bhonsle. This song has other voices too, but I cannot identify them. Among the actors, I can only identify Agha. My guess is that the lady lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is Achla Sachdev, but do not take my word for it. 😀

P L Santoshi, the director himself is the lyricist of this song.

This movie apparently had two music directors, namely O P Nayyar and Nashaad (whom internet sites including imdb regard as the same as Naushad). This song is attributed to O P Nayyar by YT, but in reality this song is composed by Nashaad.

I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us more about this movie and the picturisation of this song.

Song-Banaane waale ne rupaiyya bhaiyya (Sabse Bada Rupaiyya) (1955) Singer-Balbir, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-P L Santoshi, MD-Nashaad

Lyrics

banaane waale ne rupaiyya bhaiyya
gol kyun banaayaa
mitti banaaya bhaiyya
jo mitti banaayaa
arre soch soch ke budhhe ho gaye
ab tak samajh na aaya
aaa
ab tak samajh na aaya

hoy
banaane waale ne
banaane waale ne rupaiyya bhaiyya
gol kyun banaaya
ho
gol kyun banaaya
ho
is liye banaaya bhaiyya gol rupaiyya
kyonki
chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
ye to apna thhikaana badalta rahe
kyonki
chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe

rukta nahin ye
laakh koi rokey
laakh koi rokey
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa
reh na sake ye kisi ka bhi hokey
kisi ka bhi hokey
jiske haathhon mein aaye wo to hansta rahe
jiske haathhon mein aaye wo to hansta rahe
jiske haathhon se jaaye wo jalta rahe
ho jee
chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe

chaal mein iski hai jaadoo mere babu
chaal mein iski hai jaadoo mere babu
ispe nahin hai kisi ka bhi qaaboo
kisi ka bhi qaaboo
kisi ka bhi qaaboo
isko dekhen te nazren machalti rahe
isko dekhen te dil haay phisalta rahe rahe
ho jee
chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe jee bhaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe
rupaiyya chalta rahe
chalta rahe
chalta rahe
chalta rahe
ho

Atul ji,
SABSE BADA RUPAIYA(1955) was produced by Alhad Chitra. It was directed by P.L.Santoshi who also wrote some songs(with Majrooh sultanpuri),story(with Madhusudan Kalelkar) and dialogues.
There were 2 MDs,namely Nashaad and O.P.Nayyar.
The film’s cast was Shashikala,Raja Gosavi,Nana Palshikar,Sunder,Achla Sachdev,Krishnakant,Kundan,Agha etc.
The story is about how sudden windfall of good fortune changes honest and simple people.
Karodimal,a millionaire has a son Kishen, who treats money as a means to an end rightly.Karodimal has given hugh loan to Gangaram, who can not repay.Karodimal wants to marry his daughter Laxmi,in return for loan.WhenLaxmi tries suicide,Kishen saves her and love blooms. They are about to marry when father comes to know, but the marriage takes place. One day Laxmi finds a big box full of notes. She hides it in junk. Her gambler brother Gopal sells that junk. When the truth is revealed all people are after the box.Human characters are revealed in this commotion.
All is well when Karodimal falls ill and only good nursing by Laxmi saves him, making him realise value of human love.

Atul ji,
This is very interesting and not many people know these things.
O.P.Nayyar’s films like Aarpaar,CID,Mr.&Mrs 55,Baap re Baap etc became very famous but he did not get any payments from guru dutt.Once OPN went to Guru Dutt to ask for his payments,as his small child needed milk and he had no money, but, according to OPN,Guru dutt who was fully drunk threw away OPN by kicking him without any payments.
OPN had become very bitter and to make quick money he started snatching films from other Composers.Roshan was removed from Mehbooba(1954),Mohd.Shafi was removed from Mangu(1955)and Naashad was removed from Sabse bada Rupaiyya. All these films went to OPNayyar.
When Roshan was removed from Mehbooba,Lata Mangeshkar became very angry(she respected Roshan) and she announced that she will not sing the balance songs of Mehbooba,to which OPN retorted,”but I am not asking her to sing in Mehbooba”.Enraged,Lata managed to garner support of naushad,Anil Bishwas and others who took this matter of replacing Music Directors in the Cine Music Directors’ association, which boycotted OPN.He was not getting Recording studios, musicians nor any singers for his songs. At that time Shamshad Begum stood by him like a rock and did all his songs free for him.
Even to such a great helper,OPN ditched Shamshad Begum in preference to Asha Bhosle, just like he ditched Geeta Dutt !

Thanks a lot for all this background information. Indeed, OP Nayyer proved to be no different from Guru Dutt, as far as standing by his benefactors was concerned.
