Tumko dekha to ye khayaal aayaa

In most Hindi movies, the actors lead reel lives that has little resemblence to real life of normal people. And it was widely believed (and the myths are further perpetuated by people) that movie watchers used movies to live their fantasies and so they wanted to relive their fantasies in the movies instead of being reminded of their day to day life. And that explained the larger than life characters in Hindi movies.
On the other end of the spectrum, we had “art” movies that insisted on showing reality. These movies tended to display helplessness of ordinary people. These movies tended to flop badly, with the result that makers of such movies produced such movies not with ordinary movie watchers in mind but with film festivals in mind, and these film festivals were often the only place where these movies were screened.
In 1970s, one found a via media of movies where the characters were not larger than lives, nor were they as helpless as in art movies. These characters resembled characters one may come across real life. These movies are these characters struck a sympathetic chord with many movie goers.
These movies gave movie goers an alternative kind of “stars”. In 1970s, they gave us Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Rameshwari etc.
Farooque Shaikh, who made his debut with “Noorie” (1979) became a popular actor in such movies. And Deepti Nawal, who looked like a plain jane ordinary girl next door, won many a fans with her heart warming depiction of a girl with whom one can identify.
“Saath Saath”(1982) was one movie that had Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Nawal paired together. and they made a good pair together, not onl in this movie but in all the movies where they appeared together.
These movies had another effect on music of Hindi movies. In 1970s, they gave us lilting movies that were often based on folk music which was in sharp contrast to the mainstream music of 1970s. When it came to 1980s, the mainstream movie had embraced Disco music, and at that time the music of these alternative movies came like a breath of fresh air.
These alternative movies had music that had its roots in the county and also music of the kind that were getting forgotten with time. These movies brought back ghazals to Hindi movies.
One of the major ghazal singers who made his mark as a ghazal singer in Hindi movie those days was Jagjit Singh, who till then was singing ghazals in concerts with hitra Singh , his wife. The two often came as apackage deal in Hindi movie playback singing in the sense that they could be used to sing duets.
Here is a nice duet from “Saath Saath” (1982) which is sung by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh. More accurately, it is a singing-humming song, where Jagjit Sigh sings and Chitra Singh hums.
The song is picturised beautifully on Farooque Sheikh and Deepti Nawal.
