Poochho na hamen ishq mein kyaa kyaa nazar aayaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Put together the year 1964, the names like Dara Singh, Ameeta, Feroze Khan, Mumtaz, King Kong, Tiger Jogender, a director by the name Nanabhai Bhatt, and a film title like Samson. And here is a ready recipe for a B/C grade stunt film. The name and presence of Dara Singh could well have been the saving grace of this film, in the local B/C grade cinema halls circuit, and likewise the name of the film does not sound so unfamiliar. But then, pour into this mix some lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and some melodious tunes by Chitragupt. Well now, the recipe does turn out to be more interesting, for now at least we are assured there will be some good music coming along with the stunts. Mind not the situations and the people who would perform these pieces of music on screen, the promise of some good songs will not be turned down.
And so is the case with this qawwaali from this film. How does it fit into the flow of screenplay, how is the on screen performance of the actors who render it, what is the contribution of this piece of music to the overall film – these and other such questions are for theoreticians and critics who may want to nitpick and dissect the proverbial hair. For lesser mortals like us, the words, the flow, the melody and the song is simply the reward in itself.
Samson (1964) is produced under the banner of Shri Krishna Films and directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The star cast is as impressive as it can get for stunt films of that era. It includes Dara Singh, Ameeta, Feroze Khan, Mumtaz, BM Vyas, Mohan Choti, Jagdeep, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Madhumati, Jeevankala, Habib, King Kong, Tiger Joginder, Swarn Singh, KC Panda etc. Lyrics are by Majrooh and the music is by Chitragupt.
This qawwaali is another sample of “baitbaazi”, a competitive musical offering. Once again, there are ideas, taunts and challenges related to love, being thrown at each other by the two teams. The first team is an all male combine led by Jagdeep and Mohan Choti. The singing is impressive, because in the background, the voices are those of Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor. The second team is made up of “Amazonian” women, led by Madhumati Shakila Bano Bhopali. And the singing voice for her is of Asha Bhosle. In my opinion, it is a lost match for the male team right from the start. If it takes two singing and two performing stalwarts to take on the lone competitor on other team, well then, not much more to say. 😀
The audience of this qawwaali is the pair of Dara Singh and Mumtaz. As the qawwaali progresses, the two are sharing glances with each other, Mumtaz being the coy one, and Dara Singh is his huge smiling and comfortable self with just a skirt to adorn his midriff. The two are seated pretty much apart, beyond arm’s length, maybe that is the code of conduct in the time of Samson.
Regardless, a wonderful qawwaali, although it is probably as obscure as other B/C grade films’ music of its time. Listen and enjoy.
poochho na hamen ishq mein, kyaa kyaa nazar aayaa
allaah ki kudrat ka tamaasha nazar aayaa
Being in love has displayed what all splendid visions, don’t ask
The magnificent spectacle of His creations is revealed to me
surat mein haseenon ki hamen, kyaa nazar aayaa
allaah ki kudrat ka tamaasha nazar aayaa
The glimpses of the beauty and the elegance of my beloved showed me what all, don’t ask
The magnificent spectacle of His creations is revealed to me
kehne ko to sab kehte hain ulfat ka fasaanaa
kis mein hai wafaa kitni, ye kab ishq se jaanaa
har chehre se utth’taa huaa purdaah nazar aayaa
Everybody recounts their own saga of emotions of love
But how true are the promises of faith, can be gauged only thru love
I can see true emotions behind the veil of everyone’s face
hum ko to jilaayaa isi awaaz ne jaise
duniyaa hi badal di nigaah-e-naaz ne jaise
qaatil jisey samjhe thhe maseehaa nazar aayaa
The sound of your call has given me a new lease of life
s if my whole existence is transformed merely by one demure glance from you
Whom I thought to be my slayer, turns out to be my savior
suntey ho nazar waale, karte thhe bahut naaleh
halki si jhalak paayee, bas jaan pe ban aayee
dil jaane kahaan gum hai, hontthon pe tabassum hai
chehre pe bhi lehraayaa, armaanon ka ik saayaa
aankhon mein bhi kuchh, rang-e-tamannaa nazar aayaa
Listen, O, who claim they can see, you have moaned and complained a lot
Just one glance of true love, and this elegance becomes the end of life for you
The heart seems has gone astray, you don’t even notice the smile on the lips
Longing moves many a wave of emotion across my face
And the color in the eyes revealed a touch of desire
kehte hain jo dekha hai, phir jhootth bhalaa kyaa hai
gumchaa hai to mehke-gaa, shola hai to to lehke-gaa
khud apni adaa dekho, aainaa zaraa dekho
surat hi mili aisi, aankhon ki khataa kaisi
jaise ho sanam tum hamen waisaa nazar aayaa
We express, what we have seen, there is no untruth in that
A flower – it will surely spread fragrance
An ember – it will surely make a dancing flame
Take a look at your own grace and elegance, in a mirror
If my eyes gaze at you, it’s not their fault; your beauty is such
The visions that I have of you, are exactly as He intended you to be
jab ishq basaa dil mein, har gaon hai manzil mein
chaahat ki nazar ka ye adnaa sa karishmaa hai
phoolon ki to kyaa baat hai, kaanta bhi haseen hai
chaahat se jidhar daali nazar, yaar wahin hai
samjhe thhe jise gair, wo apnaa nazar aaayaa
Since love made its home in my heart, every place is within my destination
It is but a small miracle of your glance of love
Flowers may be, but even the thorns seem lovely today
I find my true love, whichever way I glance with longing
Whom I thought to be a stranger, turns out to be very close to my heart

Sudhir ji,
I remember having seen this Dara singh movie.
SAMSON(1964) was a great entertainer, what with 2 super bouts of Tiger Joginder and Darasingh and king kong with Dara singh.
Samson(DS) is the king of the jungle where every animal is Samson’s pet,and he will go to any level to protect them.H e has a friend Salook(Feroze Khan).
Sheba(Mumtaz) is the Princess of Husnabad,an all female kingdom, ruled by their own God.Rashid(B.M.Vyas) is the only male in the kingdom, who is the caretaker of their God.No males are allowed, and if any male enters,he is killed.
Rashid has predicted that if Sheba falls in love with a Male, the kingdom will be destroyed.Laila(Ameeta),Sheba’s best friend falls in love with Salook, when she visits the jungle once.Sheba tries to dissuade her from love, but Sheba herself falls in love with Samson, when she goes to the jungle to find Laila.
Rashid warns her and there is a great fire in the kingdom, but still Sheba goes to Samson.Rashid challenges him to fight with 2 monster wrestlers, but Samson wins. Finally,Sheba and Samson come to know that Rashid is a cheat and wanted to usurp the kingdom.
In the end,Love and Dara Singh win hands down.

It was very nice of you to do an English translation of the lyrics .I am sure the vast majority of the people who follow this blog do not need this . But for people like me in the UK with a poor grasp of Hindi/Urdu who enjoy the music but not the subtlety of the lyrics this is a great help. It would be lovely if more of this could be done, to increase the enjoyment of some of us less able devotees of Indian Film Music!

Most probably, the lady who lip syncs for this song must be
SHAKILA BANO BHOPALI(Its my purely my guess work). Some one please correct me If I am wrong!!!!
I am 100% sure that it is not, Madhumati,
But Madhumathi is there in the other song of this movie:
“Hum tho khaaraab huye sanam teri matwaali aankhon se milke”(sung by usha and lata mangeshkar featuring Jeevan kala,Ameeta, and MADHUMATI,Feroze khan-this song is a song cum dance sequence)

Arun ji,
Thanks for the details about the film.
Prakash ji,
Totally agree with you. I checked a couple of other video clips, the lady singer on screen is Shakila Bano Bhopali. Thanks for catching the error and correction.
Atul ji
Request to please make the correction in the write up – please replace the name Madhumati with Shakila Bano Bhopali.
Thanks

Ah, this is a movie I happen to know very well. Good fun cast in Dara Singh – Mumtaz pairing alongwith Feroz Khan – Ameeta pairing. The songs are absolutely lovely, each one of them. I remember in particular “ek baat hai kehne ki” and “khuda karey O jaaneman”.
This particular qawwali is what would be considered in today’s parlance as an “item number”. It has no ostensible purpose in the movie as such (other than perhaps to show Mumtaz and Dara in love). Not that I’m complaining! 🙂 Jagdeep has no role in the movie other than this qawwali.
Nice qawwali – and, as usual, a lovely write-up by Sudhirji.

Indeed, Raja subtitled this movie for me because I love it! I always wonder why Shakila Bano Bhopali is voiced by playback singers when she was a noted singer herself?

I am also looking for a song sung by Shakila Bano Bhopali herself.
