Saathi hai albelaa phir bhi koi akelaa

Posted on: November 8, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Continuing with the series of posts about rare Mukesh gems, here is a wonderful solo song from the film Hum Matwaale Naujawaan (1961). This film is a social drama, produced under the banner of Rover Films, Bombay and directed by LR Asthaana. The star cast includes Shekhar, Saeeda Khan, Jeevan, Agha, Lillian, Mirza Musharraf, Chaman Puri, Gopal Sehgal, Tun Tun, Indira Bansal, Kammo Tripathi, Ravikant, Baby Farida etc. The film was not any major success at the box office, but it did leave its mark. Its music and songs are really very good – a typical grade A quality of music for a B/C grade film. The lyrics are Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music composition is by Chitragupt. This song is a lovely melody, that has been wonderfully rendered by Mukesh.

The film has a number of other very good songs also, and one of them, ‘Beetey Na Ye Raat Sanam’ already finds a place on this blog. There are other songs that I am sure will slowly appear here, as we make further progress.

I do not have much more information about this film, and would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more info. The song itself is a lonely-hearts type of a song, the words are lovely, displaying a carefree mind set, a person who appears is looking for a companion, but not complaining if there is no one coming along. The composition by Chitragupt is very hummable. And I am sure you will want to listen to it more than once. Enjoy this another forgotten gem in the voice of Mukesh.

saathi hai albelaa, phir bhi koi akelaa
kisi se hum kuchh bhi nahin kehte
hamen to hai shiqwaa mausam se

My companion is a plucky, spirited soul
And yet someone (this heart) is lonely
I am not making out a grievance to anyone in particular
I simply have a complaint against this ambient scenario

suntaa nahin zamaanaa, raahi ka afsanaa
rasta nayaa manzil nai, tanhaa hai dewaanaa
kisi ko kyaa lenaa phir hum se
hamen to hai shiqwaa mausam se

None in the world would lend an ear, for a traveler’s song
New pathways, new destinations, and this roving heart moves on all alone
Why then would anyone else have anything to do with me
But I simply have a complaint against this ambient scenario

seeney mein sulgaayen, sholaa sa ye hawaaein
phir bhi agar dil se mere, daaman ko bachaaein
to koi kyun bijli ban chamke
hamen to hai shiqwaa mausam se

The boundless winds rake up the embers of the heart, into flames
And yet, the same winds would avoid meeting with my heart
Why then would it try shine and impress someone
I simply have a complaint against this ambient scenario
(NOTE: the intent of these lines is that there is someone who stimulates the fires in the heart, but does not want to be together. So let it be, why should my heart try to impress (that someone).)

dil dekhiye hamaaraa, maangaa nahin sahaaraa
unko nahin unko nahin, tum ko nahin pukaaraa
to koi kyun uljhe thham thamm ke
hamen to hai shiqwaa mausam se

Lo, this heart of mine does not seek comfort and succor from anyone
Never has it called out to you or anyone else
Why then would anyone else bother to pause and get interested (in me)
I simply have a complaint against this ambient scenario

Sudhir ji,
HUM MATWALE NAUJAWAN(1961) was directed by L.R.Asthana,who also wrote the screenplay. The dialogues were by Ehsan Rizvi.
This was an ordinary movie with a routine storyline and a tame handling of direction.Seth Laxmidas (Jeewan) is a very greedy prson who will do anything for money. He kills his own best friend Ramkumar,to swallow his hugh estate in a phased manner.next on the target is his son,so that Asha(Sayeeda Khan),his daughter is left alone in this world,to whom Laxmidas wants to make his daughter in law so that he gets control of her wealth.
All goes as per plan, except that Banke(Agha) and Bihari(Chaman puri),two of his employees come to know everything and also get the proof-Seth laxmidas’s Diary!
meanwhile the new Police Inspector Kumar(Shekhar) falls in love with Asha and gets a doubt about Laxmidas.Banke and Bihari join hands with the police and finally,Laxmidas is behind the bars.
Police inspector gets a medal from Government and a love nod from Asha to make him happy.
