Teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon aisi meri taqdeer kahaan

Posted on: December 10, 2011

Most movies of the olden days had great music. In fact, music served as a major attraction for movie goers. There were many movies that became hits mainly because of the music.

Then there were cases when the music was great but the movie itself was mediocre. In such cases, the movie would sing and the great music of that movie would often be wasted.

Great music getting wasted in flop movies- it was a standard fate of movies with music by Madan Mohan. Madan Mohan would create divine music and he would have great hopes from m the movie, but the movie would flop. In fact, he was very appropriately described as “Shaapit Gandharv” (Cursed musician of the Gods).

Here is a faboulous composition from “Jahaan Ara” (1964) which was one of the most resounding flops that any movie could be, The movie deserved its fate, but the music deserved a much better deal. Listening to this song is a divine experience.

This song is picturised on Bharat Bhushan and Mala Sinha.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaun aisi meri taqdeer kahaan (Jahaan Ara)(1964) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

tera gamkhwar hoon
lekin main tujh tak aa nahin sakta
main apne naam
teri bekasi likhwa nahin sakta
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahaan
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahaan
tere gam mein tujh ko behlaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahan
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon

ai kaash jo milkar rote
kuchh dard to halke hote
bekaar na jaate aansoo
kuchh daag jigar ke dhote
phir ranj na hota itna
hai tanhaayi mein jitna
ab jaane yeh rasta gam ka
hai aur bhi lamba kitna
haalaat ki uljhan suljhaaoon
haalaat ki uljhan suljhaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahaan
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon

kya teri zulf ka lehra
hai ab tak wohi sunehra
kya ab tak tere dar pe
deti hai hawaayen pehra
lekin hai yeh khaam khayaali
teri zulf bani hai sawaali
mohtaaj hai ek kali ki
ek roz thi phoolon waali
woh zulf-e- pareshaan mehkaaoon
woh zulf-e- pareshaan mehkaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahan
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon
aisi meri taqdeer kahaan
teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon

——————————
Translation(Provided by Sudhir)
——————————
tera gamkhwaar hoon, lekin mein tujh tak aa nahin sakta
main apne naam teri bekasi likhwa nahin sakta

I feel compassion for your sorrow
Alas, I cannot come to you and comfort you
(I wish I could)
But I am powerless
That I cannot will your sadness to myself

teri aankh ke aansoo pea jaaoon, aisi meri taqdeer kahaan
tere gham mein tujh ko behlaaoon, aisi meri taqdeer kahaan

I wish I could kiss away your tears
But such fortune, it is not mine
I wish I could allay your distress
Alas, such fortune, it is not mine

ai kaash jo milkar rote, kuchh dard to halke hote
bekaar na jaate aansoo, kuchh daag jigar ke dhote

Were it so that we could be together, in tears
Many an anguish (of the heart) may have been lighter
The tears then, would not have flown in vain
And some wounds of the heart would have mended

phir ranj na hota itna, hai tanhaayi mein jitna
ab jaane yeh rasta gam ka, hai aur bhi lamba kitna
haalaat ki uljhan suljhaaoon, aisi meri taqdeer kahaan

The regret then, would have been a mite lesser
Than the one we suffer in loneliness now
I wonder how much more long
Are these passages of travails
I wish I could untangle the knots of contingent fate
Alas, such fortune, it is not mine

kya teri zulf ka lehra, hai ab tak wohi sunehra
kya ab tak tere dar pe deti hai hawaayen pehra

I wonder
If the waves in your tresses are still reminiscent of gold
I wonder
If the winds still stand vigil at your gates

lekin hai yeh khwaab khayaali, teri zulf bani hai sawaali
mohtaaj hai ek kali ki, ek roz thi phoolon waali
woh zulf-e- parishaan mehkaaoon, aisi meri taqdeer kahaan

Alas, but these are dreams of delusion
Your tresses beg for an admirer’s attention
Even a small bud is not at hand in pleasure
For the one who once commanded attention of bouquets and blossoms
I wish I could caress in, the fragrance of comfort
To your unsettled tresses
Alas, such fortune, it is not mine

This song wasn’t posted till now? It is a lovely song by Talat saab and goes very well with the mood of the moment. This movie had fabulous songs even if the movie itself flopped badly. To be honest, when I saw the movie a few years ago I quite liked it. But then, I like this type fo movie anyway – and my taste has not been known to be in sync with the public’s taste. 😉

Yes, my taste is also different from popular public taste.

Khyati ji,

All songs of this film are beautiful to hear. Madan Mohan -Talat Mehmood combination just like Madan Mohan – Lata simply amazes me. Now we come to the duet in this film “ae sanam aaj yeh qasam khaayen” which combines all three. I have seen this movie long back on DD, and since then this duet which is a dream sequence is my favourite. I hope you have sent the lyrics for that too.

Regards.

Nahmji, Atulji, Rajaji,
Just like you our whole family has a different taste than the general public. My kids also don’t get bothered by the star rating which is either based on the public opinion or the reporter(writer of the article). Sometimes they prefer to watch one or two star movies just because of that movie. Of course they would check the other details also. This Jahan Ara movie was/is a biggest musical hit for me and my husband. I heard that Rajinder Krishan, Madam Mohan and Talat Mahmood worked together after a big break of almost 10 years and the movie flopped (according to public opinion and financially) but these three “Giants” created the most melodious songs that went beyond anybody’s expectations. My husband is the biggest fan of Talat Sahab. He loves all his songs (movie or private). Actually he is the one who “introduced” me to Talat Sahab after our engagement. Warna hum to sirf Talat Sahab ke teen chaar gaane hi pehchan te the jaise Jalte hain Jiske Liye, Jaaye to jaaye kahan…. I am very much thankful to him for this introduction with the great Talat Sahab. Warna hume to pata hi nahin chalta ki Ghazal kya hai.
This song was a farmaish from Sh Vina (Oct 28, 2011) and I have mailed Atulji another song “Main Teri Nazar Ka Suroor hoon” from the same movie and farmaish of same person. Writing lyrics is the easy part for me but searching the details of that movie/song is the demanding job. I really admire the hard work that Prakashji, Sudhirji, Arunkumarji and you all are doing for that search part. And it would be unfair to mention here that actually my husband helped me write the lyrics of these both the songs without even listening to them.

Khyati ji & Atul ji,

Some minor corrections in the second stanza :

lekin hai yeh ‘ khaam ‘ khayaali
teri zulf bani hai sawaali
mohtaaj hai ek kali ki
ek roz thi phoolon waali
woh ‘ zulf-e- pareshaan ‘ mehkaaoon
woh ‘ zulf-e- pareshaan ‘ mehkaaoon

‘Khwaab-o-khayaal’ is a oft used term. But here it is “Khaam khayaali”, which means, useless to imagine or expect.

This HQ Audio link has a better sound:

If you havent sent the Lata-Talat duet song, then i am sending the lyrics now.

The honorable lyricist Rejendra Krishna can write a great dialogue as well urdu lyrics or some of very lovely songs in brij bhasha too.
Although all ghazals follow the same rhyme-scheme.But Madanji decided to focus on the aspects of … his particular taste and style.

Dhanyawaad to mujhe aapka karna hai. Agar aapne yeh farmaish nahin kee hoti to kisi ko pata bhi nahin chalta ki yeh gaana abhi tak blog me aaya hi nahin tha. Aur kitne saare sngeet premee iska “lutf” (right nahamji?) nahin utha paate.
I am a very big fan of Madanji also. Love the combination of Madanji with Rafi, Madanji with Talat and of course Madanji with Lataji.

I have sent your farmaish “jab jab tumhe bhoolaayaa……” to Atulji. He may post it after filtering out all mistakes I may have made 😀
Specially those urdu words.
