Aate hain aate hain tashreef laatey hain

If some of the children’s songs in Hindi films are of any indication, we get an impression that children of our country grow up quite early in terms of their maturity and actions. Some of such songs are addressed to the parents, elders and even to God. Of course, this is but one of the cinematic liberties which those associated with making films is entitled to. However, I now find that most of the children in the internet age are indeed far ahead in terms of maturity and thinking than the children of our younger days. So kudos to our Hindi film fraternity for being ahead of time in this regard!

I have given this prologue because the song in question to be discussed here is a children’s song composed by Chitragupt Shrivastav, better known as Chitragupt in Hindi film industry on the occasion of his death anniversary which falls on January 14th. Chitragupt was one of those music directors of Hindi film industry whose talent went unrecognised. He gave, to use Atul’s phrase, ‘A’ grade songs for ‘B’ or ‘C’ grade Hindi movies, some of which went into oblivion soon after their releases. He also lent his voice as playback singer in films such as Tarang (1952) and Manchala (1953). The fact that he did not get a single Filmfare Award for the best music director and his sons, music director duo Anand-Milnd got one, show where the listeners’ taste for Hindi film songs was heading during the period of transition of the Hindi film music.

The song Aate hain aate hain tashreef laatey hain is from film MERA QASOOR KYAA HAI (1964). The film was directed by Krishnan-Panju and star cast included Dharmendra and Nanda in lead roles. The song is picturised on child actor Babloo and the lead actors Darmendra and Nanda are present in the frame who are amused by Babloo’s observations including his blessings to them. Incidentally, his name appears as part of the lyrics in the last stanza of the song. Rajendra Krishan wrote this song which was beautifully sung by Usha Mangeshkar. The highlight of this song was the harmonica played during the beginning and the interlude of the song. This is one of a few good banner movies for which Chitragupt got opportunity to compose music.

‘This is one of the few good banner movies for which Chitragupt scored music’?!! I’m sorry I don’t agree. He had scored music for many movies from good banners. Who can forget his music in ‘Bhabhi’, made by AVM? A song that I really love is ‘Dil ka diya, jalake gaya..’ from ‘Akash Deep’ sung by Lata.

About two weeks ago, Usha Mangeshkar was awarded with the Maharashtra Ratna Award.
As always she is maintaining her simplicity and the straightforwardness.

Kamath ji,
I agree with menon ji,on the point that Chitragupt did work for many Big banners and Big people.
Chitragupt was a double M.A. and was a Lecturer in a college in Patna,Bihar. He came to Bombay and assisted SNTripathy, before his first break came in 1946.
in early 50s,SDBurman recommended his name to Mr.Meiappan of AVM and Chitragupt went to Madras. In all he did 5 AVM films.
He also worked in films of Mohan Saigal,Hrishikesh Mukherjee,G.P.Sippy and Kishore Sahu.
He worked with famous Lyricists, like Sahir,Majrooh,Rajendra krishna,Anand Baxi,Prem Dhawan etc.
He did some punjabi,Gujrathi and Bhojpuri films,in addition to one Tamil Film with a big star like MGR.
I had the good fortune to meet Chitragupt at the time of his son Milind’s marriage. The bride was my friend’s daughter and in that connection I had gone to his house few times. He was suffering from partial paralysis but was talking very enthusiastically about music. He was happy that his sons were successful.
