Zindagi mein jab tumhaare gham nahin thhey

Posted on: February 9, 2012

“Dooriyaan” (1979) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog. The era of nerve jangling and mind numbing disco had begun by then, but on the other hand, soothing ghazals were making a brief return in a few movies, including this one. So the songs of this movie belong to this blog.

Here is a superb ghazal from this movie. I have heard this song quite a few times without knowing the details. Thanks to the lyrics and details of this song (sent to me by Khyati Bhatt), now I know that this song, which is sung by Anuradha Paudwal and Bhupinder Singh, written by Sudarshan Faakir and composed by Jaidev. The song is picturised on Sharmila Tagore and Uttam Kumar.

This song is also a belated birthday wish from this blog to Bhupinder Singh whose birthday falls on 6th february.

zindagi mein
jab tumhaare
gham nahin thhey
zindagi mein
jab tumhaare
gham nahin thhey
itne tanhaa
itne tanhaa thhey ke
hum bhi hum nahin thhey
zindagi mein

waqt par jo log kaam aaye hai aksar
waqt par jo
waqt par jo log kaam aaye hai aksar
ajnabi thhey
woh mere humdam nahin thhey
ajnabi thhey
woh mere humdam nahin thhey
zindagi mein jab tumhare gham nahin thhey
zindagi mein

besabab tha tera milna rehguzar mein
besabab tha tera milna rehguzar mein
rehguzar mein
haadse har mod par kuchh kum nahin thhey
haadse har mod par kuchh kum nahin thhey

zindagi mein jab tumhare gham nahin the
zindagi mein

hum ne khwaabon mein khuda bankar bhi dekha
hum ne khwaabon mein khuda bankar bhi dekha
aap thhey baahon mein
do aalam nahin thhey
aap thhey baahon mein
do aalam nahin the
zindagi mein jab tumhaare gham nahin thhey
zindagi mein

saamne deewar thhi khuddariyon ki
saamne deewar thhi khuddariyon ki
warna raste pyaar ke purkham nahin thhey
warna raste pyaar ke purkham nahin thhey

zindagi mein jab tumhare gham nahin thhey
itne tanha
itne tanhaa thhey ke hum bhi hum nahin thhey
zindagi mein

Prakashji,
I have lyrics of “zindagi Zindagi mere ghar aana…….” with me. I was not so sure that this ghazal “zindagi mein jab tumhare….” will be included in the post as I am aware of the fact that Atulji is a big fan of Oldies. But as this is not a typical new 1990s movie song, I felt that he must have listened to and enjoyed this ghazal in past and would love to share it with all. So, Now I will send him this “farmaish” also.
BTW, my name spells like Khyati (without “h”).

Prakash ji,

You missed one. The most interesting cameo appearance by Jalaal Agha, as a newspaper seller. Yes I refer to the wonderful rendition by Manna Dey, ‘Evening News, Evening News’. 😀

That song is a news for me.
Thank You for discovering another song from DOORIYAAN(for me),till today I haven`t seen that movie, eventhough I want to see that movie badly, because the same guy BHIMSAIN,(who directed GHARONDA)directed that movie. Am I right??
When that movie released, I was at 6th standard and not allowed to see the movie by my parents. For us only Mythological and Amithji`s selected movies were allowed at that time.

Jaidevji`s heavenly music still haunts me.

Thanks again and regards

Prakash ji,

Yes, both films were directed by Bhimsain, and Jaidev was the composer for both films. The song that I mentioned is really very interesting. Jalaal Agha is selling newspapers on the street, and he has done a wonderful job of playing many roles within the song itself. I searched on YouTube, but could locate the audio clip only. It is available at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8MP4GIgstE

For every different accent you hear in this song, Jalaal Agha plays each role for a few seconds, it is really hilarious. There is a line about one news where a man has eloped with the ‘saali’ of his elder brother. At this point Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore are in the frame, and Uttam Kumar gasps, ‘Lo apni khabar bhi chhapp gayee’, and then Sharmila gives a response.

As I said it is a real hilarious song. I am sure you will like it when you hear it. 🙂

You does have a special knack of explaining the things, That I can almost visualise the things as if they are naturally happening in front of your eyes, by reading your sentences.
God bless you.

Khyati ji, Atul ji,

The word ‘purkham(?)’ in the last antaraa is correct.

The meaning of word ‘pukham’ = complicated, difficult, full of bends.

This word is made from two separate words.
purkham = pur + kham

The literal meaning of ‘kham’ relates to hair.
‘kham’ = ‘curl’
It also means ‘bend’, like a bend in the road.

The word ‘pur’ = full of; or composed of

So the word ‘pur-kham’ means full of curls or full of bends. The phrase ‘gessu-e-purkham’ is frequently used in poetry to depict beautiful curly hair. (‘gessu’ = hair, or locks of hair).

Applied to travel, and to life, the word ‘pur-kham’ means a path that is full of too many turns and twists, and hence difficult to traverse. The phrase ‘purkham raaste’ means a road difficult to travel.

The lines
“saamne deewar thhi khuddariyon ki
warna raste pyaar ke purkham nahin the”

translates as
“the wall of ego and arrogance was in the way
else the path of love was not a difficult one’

Sudhirji,
Just that one missing word was bothering me so much as could not get the meaning of that stanza. “Aapne to mere khane mein namak daal diya ke jiske beena khana swadishta, tastey, ho nahin sakata” Thanks so much.

Very funny song. Manna Da is so great! He is singing for all three boys at the age of 62. (He is born in 1919.) Loved the part- yeh gir kar mara ya mar kar gira?. Thanks Sudhirji and Prakashji for the song.

Wonderful, and thanks for locating the video link. I am seeing it again after a long time. First I must take back what I said about the filming being done in Delhi. This is clearly filmed in Bombay.

Secondly, I believe the lady with Uttam Kumar, during the last antaraa, is Sharmila Tagore only. I remember from the original viewing also, and viewed this clip also, two three times.

Thirdly, a very interesting cameo within the cameo. If you see, in the very last part, when Mohan Choti is saying “arre bhai paanch paise mein hi le lo evening news”. He is addressing a bearded gentleman. See him carefully. It is Bhimsain himself, in a very short appearance. 🙂

Abhi mere oopar hanso mat, Sudhirji, Sharmilaa ki pet utnaa chaudaa nahin hai….., woh lady actress ki figure dekho, sharmilaa uss time mein bahut patli thi.
Par ho saktaa hai, aapne uss movie ko bade parde mein dekha hai naa, Ho saktaa hai shamilaa hi hogi.

Thank you for identifying Bhimsainji, if I am not mistaken ek cartoon movie(message based cartoon) doordarshan mein aathaa thaa, “ek titili anek titliyaan or cartoon of pigeons and a shikaari,
Aapko maloom hai kyaa, uss cartoon ko BHIMSAINji ne direct kiyaa tha kyaa? Aisa kahin padaa thaa.

Prakash ji,

Now we are treading very, very delicate territory here, as you have brought up the issue of size and figure. 😉

I did some checking of dates related to film and personal histories. First of all, we need to correct the year of this film. The official and correct relelase year is 1979. I know that on the internet there are conflicting information available – both years 1979 amd 1981 are shown. I checked the “searchamovie” web page and that is where the error is. I have earlier found many errors in this list, and this one is an error too. The release year of this film is 1979.

Second, checking the personal history of Sharmila ji, aka Begum Ayehsa Sultana after her marriage to Mansoor Ali Khan, Nawab of Pataudi Jr., we find that by 1979, Sharmila ji was already a mother of 3 children. Her third child, Soha Ali Khan, is born in the year 1978.

So, in this film, that probably went to the studio floors shortly after Soha Ali Khan was born, it may be correct that she no longer carried a thin and petite figure as she did in ‘An Evening in Paris’ (1967) or ‘Aradhana’ (1969). I am very sure that the actress we see in this video clip is Sharmila Tagore.

Prakash ji,

Regarding Bhimsen Khurana, and the animated film on Doordarshan, your guess is very correct. The name of this animated short film is ‘Ek, Anek, Ekta’, which Bhimsen had produced. His forte is animation films and he has a company that creates animation films. The recent well known feature lenght film ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ is produced by him and his son Kireet Khurana.

I am butting in this conversation nine years too late. I go with Prakashji, that the actress in the song “Evening News” is Priyadarshini. The movie is on youtube and there is a close up at 40:09 where you can clearly see her face. She is in the same get-up there as in the song.

Thanks for the song lyrics Khyatiji and for the explanation or purkham and anecdotes Sudhirji and for the biography of the Sudarshan Arunji.

The short film “Ek, Anek, Ekta” is may be 5 or 7 min. only. I had seen it at Films Division of India website Archives last year. This Archives have nothing much but i found this film there.
