This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Today, 14th February is the birth anniversary of Jaan Nissaar Akhtar. The mention of this name brings to mind many memorable and hugely popular songs, that came from the pen of this gifted poet.

Starting with the hit songs of film ‘Yaasmeen’ (1955), notably “Bechain Nazar Betaab Jigar”, his poetry is the soul of many a wonderful songs. “Meri Neendon Mein Tum, Mere Khwaabon Mein Tum”(Naya Andaz)(1956) , “Aanakhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishaara Ho Gaya”(CID)(1956) , “Piya Piya Piya Mora Jiyaa Pukaare”(Baap Re Baap)(1955), “Main Tumhi Se Poochhti Hoon” (Black Cat)(1959), “Dhhoonde Nazar Nazar”(Dilli Ka Dada)(1962) , “Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein” (Susheela)(1966), “Ye Dil Aur Unki Nigaahon Ke Saaye”(Prem Parbat)(1973), “Aap Yun Faaslon Se Guzarte Rahe” (Shankar Hussain)(1976), “Ae Dil-e-Nadaan”(Razia Sultana)(1983) , – and on and on and on. I could go on with the list of wonderful creations from his pen.

Jaan Nissar Akhtar was born in 1914, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, into a family of scholars and poets. A man of letters by education and by profession, he did his doctorate in Urdu literature from Aligarh Muslim University, and taught Urdu and Persian at Gwalior and Bhopal from 1943 to 1949. In 1949, he moved to Bombay to write for films. It was a while before success came to him through the songs of film ‘Yasmeen’ (1955). Jaan Nissar is a poet with leftist leanings, and was part of the Progressive Writers Movement in Bombay, along with other literary stalwarts like Rajinder Singh Bedi, Ismat Chugtai, Mulk Raj Anand, Krishan Chander and others. His poetry is secular, and like many of his generation, his writings talk of dignity, freedom, social equality. He was commissioned by Jawaharlal Nehru to compile the best Hindustani poetry from the last 300 years. The first edition of this compilation was published with the title ‘Hindustan Hamara’. He was honored with the Sahitya Academy Award for Urdu Literature in `1976. In the film industry, he was recognized posthumously in 1980, awarded the Filmfare’s best song award for “Aa Jaa Re O Mere Dilbar Aa Jaa” for the film ‘Noorie’ (1979). Jaan Nissar passed away on 19th August, 1976.

Coming to the song in this post. A film by the name ‘Do Bhai’ was released in 1947, and then another by the same name was released in 1969. But there is yet one more film by the same name in 1961. Produced under the banner of All India Pictures, and directed by Vishraam Bedekar, the film’s star cast includes Shakila, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anil Kumar, Sulochana, Durga Khote, Helen, Om Prakash, Daisy Irani, Nasreen, Manorama, Rajan Haksar, Ram Avtar, Indira Bansal, Madhumalati, Chanda Bai etc. The songs of this film are written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar and the music is by N Dutta. The singing voice is that of Mukesh.

Another very poignant and sentimental song that could have been done justice to, only by the voice of Mukesh. The song simply grows on you, as you listen to it. Wonderful melody, lovely, meaningful words, and the sound of Mukesh jis’ voice. Enjoy this lovely sad song written by Jaan Nissar.

ae dil ye bataa, ye bataa, ye bataa
kya mujhe ho gayaa
main kahaan kho gayaa
par tujhe kyaa pataa, kyaa pataa

O gloomy heart, tell me
What has become of me
Where am I lost
But maybe, even you do not know

har hansi jurm hai, har khushi jurm hai
kya khabar kis liye zindagi jurm hai
aadmi se huyi kyaa khataa

Every smile, each happiness
Has become a sin
Who knows, what for
Even living has become a sin
What is a man’s fault

bekasi ke siwaa kyaa rahaa, kuchh nahin
mere dil, ab mera aasraa kuchh nahin
kam se kam tu mujhe na sataa

Nothing else remains
Other than despair and sadness
O my heart,
There is no succor for me now
At least you, please
Desist from any more turmoil

Song-Ae dil ye bata (Do Bhai)(1961) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar,MD-N Datta

Lyrics

ae dil ye bataa,
ye bataa,
ye bataa
kya mujhe
ho gayaa
main kahaan
kho gayaa
par tujhe kyaa pataa,
kyaa pataa
ae dil ye bataa

har hansi jurm hai
har khushi jurm hai
kya khabar
kis liye
zindagi jurm hai
aadmi se huyi kyaa khataa
ae dil ye bataa,
ye bataa,
ye bataa
kya mujhe
ho gayaa
main kahaan
kho gayaa
par tujhe kyaa pataa,
kyaa pataa
ae dil ye bataa

bekasi ke siwaa
kyaa rahaa
kuchh nahin
mere dil
ab mera
aasraa kuchh nahin
kam se kam
tu mujhe na sataa
ae dil ye bataa,
ye bataa,
ye bataa
kya mujhe
ho gayaa
main kahaan
kho gayaa
par tujhe kyaa pataa,
kyaa pataa
ae dil ye bataa
