Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jabse laagi tose najariyaa

Posted on: March 6, 2012

I often get confused between the two similarly named movies of 1960s, viz “Shikaar” and “Shikaari”. The confusion is compounded by the fact that both movies had similar storylines, where the hero would go to a jungle for “shikaar” where he would enounter tribals wearing Red Indian/ African kinds of heargears etc and the daughter of the chief would be the chief female dancer among the tribal dance troupe that would sing and dance at the drop of a spear.

Both these movies had absolutely stunning music in them. One can listen to the music ad nauseum without feeling bored. Singers were the same in both movies though the music directors were different. And that is how it used to be those days. Music directors, whether they were number one in their field or they were short of work, their compostions were always A grade.

For the record. “Shikaari” (1963) had divine music by G S Kohli, whereas “Shikaar” (1968) had divine music by Shankar Jaikishan.

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Shikaari” (1968) and I thought that I had covered all the great songs from this movie. I was obviously wrong. This saturday, when I accidentally got down to channel surfing, I arrived at a channel that was showing “Shikaari” (1968). I saw a song and on checking I found that the song had not figured in the blog. Before I could decide to note down the lyrics of that song, another song appeared. On checking, I found that this song too had not figured in the blog.

So I decided that this song needed to be discussed in the blog as soon as possible.

Here is this wonderfully sung and picturised song from “Shikaar” (1968). The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Lata and chorus. The song is picturised on Bela Bose (playing the daughter of the tribal chief ;), Asha Paresh and others. The song is watched by Shyam (playing the redoubtable tribal chief), Johny Walker, Dharmendra etc.

The song is extremely well sung , written, composed and picturised. Hasrat Jaipuri is the music director and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Shyam, Asha Parekh, Bela Bose- all these are favourite actors of Memsaab. in fact, I became familiar with Shyam and Bela Bose thanks to her blog where she would gush over them. I am sure Memsaab, as well as everyone else are going to love this song.

nain huye hain donon gulaabi
chaal chaloon main jaise sharaabi

nain huye hain donon gulaabi
chaal chaloon main jaise sharaabi
bhed jiya ke kaise bataaun

nas nas mein daude hai bijariya
aaja aaja more sanwqariya
mose sambhle na baali umariya

rang mein tore main to rang gayi
pyaar ki batiyaan main to samajh gayi

rang mein tore main to rang gayi
pyaar ki batiyaan main to samajh gayi
jaan le tu bhi more baalam
jaan le tu bhi more baalam
aaj main kaahe itni saj gayi

raah naweli darr mohe laage
thhaam le bainyya saamne aake

raah naweli darr mohe laage
thhaam le bainyya saamne aake
khoj mein teri khud kho jaaun
khoj mein teri khud kho jaaun
tu jo mile to bhaag ye jaage
jab se laagi tose najariya
nas nas mein daude hai bijariya
aaja aaja more sanwariya
mose sambhle na baali umariya
haay haay haay
mose sambhle na baali umariya

I do love this song, I love this film from beginning to end 🙂 What a cast! What music! What a nonsensical plot! Fabulous.

Shankar Jaikishan had this patent style of including a song from time to time in their musical scores that paired Lata with Asha. And what a successful style this turned out to be. This combination gave us some of the most memorable songs from the golden age of Hindi film music. This particular brand of SJ magic can be felt in:

Mayur Pankh (1953) Yeh Barkha Bahar Sautaniya Ke Dwar Na Ja More Saanwre Piya;

Basant Bahar (1956) Kar Gaya Re Kar Gaya Mujh Pe Jadoo Sanwariya Kar;

Chori Chori (1956) Man Bhaawan Ke Ghar Jaaye Gori Ghoonghat Mein Sharmaaye Gori;

Halaku (1956) Aji Chale Aao Aji Chale Aao Tumhen Aankhon Ne Dil Mein Bulaaya;

Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960) Kya Hua Yeh Mujhe Kya Hua Kya Pata Jaane Kyun Machal Raha;

Professor (1962) Ho Koyi Aayega Aayega Aayega Hamre Gaaon Koyi Aayega ;

Rajkumar (1964) Naach Re Man Badkamma Thumak Thumak Badkamma;

Zindagi (1964) Chhoone Na Doongi Main Haath Re Najariya Se Dil Bhar Doongi;

Jaanwar (1965) Ankhon Ankhon Mein Kisi Se Baat Huyi;

Shikaar (1968) Jab Se Laagi Tose Najariya Nas Nas Mein Daude Hai Bijuriya;

Jwala (1970) Aaha Le Gayi O Jiya Le Gayi Chhabi Sundar ;

Daaman Aur Aag (1973) Thirka Badan To Geeton Ke Dhaare Machal Pade;
