“Grihasthi” (1963) was a Gemini preoduction. It was directed by Kishore Sahu. Starcast of the movie had Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Rajshree, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, Indrani Mukherjee, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Shubha Khote, Iftekhar, Bipin Gupta, Kanhaiyalal, Manmohan Krishna, Bharati Malwankar, Achala Sachdev, Gajanan Jagirdar etc in it.
Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is a Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duet. This song is picturised on Mehmood and Shubha Khote, who were the standard CSP (comic side plot) interest of several such movies of those days.
Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
ja ja re ja deewane ja
ja ja re ja deewane ja
maine jo chaaha tujh ko
apna banaaya tujh ko
is pe akadta hai kya
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
maine ehsaan kiya
dil jo qurbaan kiya
badh badh ke baaten na bana
ja ja re ja deewane ja
ja ja re ja deewane ja
bura hai mera ghussa
jawaani ki qasam
main shola ban ke tujh ko jala doongi balam
hai bheja mera thanda nahin hai mujhe gham
main paani ban ke tujh ko bujha doon ga sanam
itna ghuroor na kar mujh ko majboor na kar
warna chakha doon gi maza
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
ja ja re ja deewane ja
jaa jaa re jaa deewaane jaa
main ban ke machhariya chhupoon gi jal mein
na aayun gi bedardi main tere bal mein
laga ke main bhi dori mein kaanta dil ka
phansa hi loon ga tujh ko bas ik pal mein
na kar takraar mujh se dekhe hain laakhon tujh se
apni tu shaikhi na jata
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
ja ja re ja deewane ja
bade hi zehreele yeh naina hain mere
main naagan ban ke das loongi chhed na mujhe
bade hi zehreele yeh naina hain mere
main naagan ban ke das loongi chhed na mujhe
banegi jo tu naagan to main bhi meri jaan
sapera ban ke kar loonga bas mein tujhe
o dil ke chor saiyan yun na marod baiyan
dil le ke aise na sata
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
ja ja ri ja deewani ja
maine ehsaan kiya dil jo qurbaan kiya
badh badh ke baaten na bana

Atif ji,
What a wonderful, and fun reminder, thanks for sending in this post. I am so glad that there are so many friends contributing – one gets to see and listen such a wonderful variety of songs, all of which are favorites across many many minds. 🙂
Mehmood seems to be a trainee, the way he is flailing his arms as if making an effort to take off for a flight. 🙂 I think his more polished performances are still some years ahead of this. But still fun, nonetheless.
Thanks again,
Rgds

Yes Sudhir, in those days even the songs composed for the comedians were made with so much care and effort. This dedication eventually shone through to give us wonderful, mellifluent tunes which are savoured to this day. Such as this one.
Sasural (1961) was Mehmood’s big breakthrough film as a comedian. What’s more, Sasural created one of the most successful comedy teams of the sixties — Mehmood and Shubha Khote. The plump and genial Shubha went on to partner Mehmood in most of his mad capers till the mid-sixties — including Grihasti, Bharosa, Ziddi and Love In Tokyo.
