Pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil

Posted on: April 3, 2012

“Saaz Aur Aawaaz” (1966) was produced by S S I films. It was directed by Subodh Mukherji. The movie had Joy Mukherjee, Saira Bano, Kanhaiya Lal, Mumtaz, Padma, Niranjan Sharma, Asit Sen etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is a duet which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. The song is picturised as a tonga song on Saira Bano and Joy Mukherji.

The music of the song sounds O P Nayyar like, but it is interesting to note that music is composed not by O P Nayyar but by Naushad. And the lyrics are written not by Naushad’s usual lyricist viz Shakeel Badayuni, but by Khumar Barabankwi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

aa haha ha ha ha ha ha
aa ha ha ha ha
aa haha ha ha ha ha ha
aa ha ha ha ha
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
paane waale pa hi gaye
preet ki reet nibaahne waale
preet ki reet nibaahne waale
ban ke saathi aa hi gaye

dil se huaa hai dil ka milan
dharti ko jhuk jhuk jhoome gagan
aa ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha
jhoom uthi aasha ki ghata
naach utha ulfat ka chaman

phool bhi dekh ke roop tumhaara
jaan-e-man sharma hi gaye
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
paane wale pa hi gaye

deep khushi ke dil mein jaley
gham ke ghanere saaye dhaley

lagta hai aisa pa ke tumhen
duniya hai jaise paaon taley
ho o
preet ke geet wafaaon ke naghme
saare jag pe chhaa hi gaye

preet ki reet nibaahne waale
preet ki reet nibaahne waale
ban ke saathi aa hi gaye

jaan se pyaara hai yeh safar
shaam hai apni apni sahar
aa ha ha ha ha ha
ha ha ha
qaid se panchhi chhoot gaye
door huaa sayyad ka darr

pyaar ki mauj mein doob ke do dil
aaj kinaara pa hi gaye
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
pyaar ki raah bahaar ki manzil
paane wale pa hi gaye

Atul,
For me it looks more of typical Naushad beats than O P Nayyarish.
Examples :

Bachpan ke din bhulaa naa denaa

Koi pyaar ki dekhe jaadugari

You got a feel of O P Nayyar shade probably because of Asha Bhonsle’s style of singing.

‘Saaz aur Awaz’ was at best, a mediocre film. Some songs were memorable though. “Tum ishq ki mehfil ho, tum husn ka jalva ho…’ by Rafi and Asha, “Saaz ho tum awaz hoon main…” by Rafi and “Payaliya bawari…” by Lata are the other three well known numbers.

To this list one may add Rafi’s evergreen “Dil ki mehfil saji hai chale aaiye ” and we get a full complement of songs that perhaps more than compensated for the averageness of the film itself.

The other notable feature, that may have rescued this film from sinking into oblivion, is Saira Banu’s fluid and sensual classical dancing and her glamorous, charismatic and graceful screen presence.

Yes Atif-ji, that song too! But, like Humpty Dumpty, all these lovely songs couldn’t put the movie on to the list of ‘hits’!
Saira Banu was very gorgeous and her dance in ‘Payaliya bawarii…” was so fantastic! Sadly, what a waste! This was another among very many celluloid ‘Titanics’ that sank without a trace….
