Dekho bijli doley bin baadal ke

O P Nayyar would not employ the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in his compositions, but no one found it ironic that Lata Mangeshkar’s younger sister became the mainstay of O P Nayyar compositions.
There were other Mangeshkar sisters too and what was O P Nayyar’s opinion on using them ? O P Nayyar never used Meena Mangeshkar’s voice as far as I am aware. But then Meena Mangeshkar did not sing too many songs either.
Usha Mangeshkar had a chequered career as compared to her more established siblings, still she may have sung several hundred songs in her decades long career.
Just now I came across an O P Nayyar composition which employs the voices of Asha Bhonsle as well as Usha Mangeshkar. This song is from ‘Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon” (1963). This song is picturised as a dance song and it is picturised on Asha Parekh, Rani, Wasti, Tabassum, Indira Bansal etc.
In this song Asha Bhonsle sings solo and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice is heard only along with Asha Bhonsle’s and never alone.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki…
chham chham chamke
maathe ki bindiyaa
jhanan jhanan
dhun paayal ki
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
dekho bijli doley
rang rupehlaa
jalwe sunehre
rang rupehlaa
jalwe sunehre
thehrein to kaise
pag nahin thehrein
jhalak dikhaate huye
kayi bal khaayee
daare nazar halki halki
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
dekho bijli doley
girti sambhalti
chali matwaari
girti sambhalti
chali matwaari
hanske uchhal padi
jaise chingaari
giri kab dil pe
gayee kab dil se
duniya rahi re
akhiyaan mal ke
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
chham chham chamke
maathe ki bindiyaa
jhanan jhanan
dhun paayal ki
dekho bijli dole bin baadal ki
dekho bijli doley

This was my favorite picture. Maybe I must have seen it 10 times at various places; once in Bhusawal of all the places
OP’s only grouse against Lata was that her voice was ‘bahut patli hain’ (in the words of OP). To some extend he was right as most of his compositions were based on Punjabi folk where earthy voices were required. In Asha he found her voice to his requirement. And Asha did nor fail him and how. Though Lata has sung many such songs; it was his perception; and we need to respect it. To each his own.
