Meethhe bol boley paayaliyaa

R D Burman in 1970s was mostly known for composing songs that dazzled the senses. But he could also compose songs that touched the heart strings of the listeners. He tended to create the later kind of songs when he tied up with Gulzar as a lyricist. That way R D Burman was somewhat similar to Kishore Kumar who was known to be a happy go lucky character most of the time but when he produced movies, then most of his movies (with the exception of “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”) were serious movies.
Here is a nice semi classical music based song from “Kinaara” (1977). Needless to say that the lyrics of this R D Burman ciomposition is written by Gulzar. The song is sung by Bhupinder Singh and Lata. The song is picturised on Sreeram Lagoo,Jeetendra (both taking turns to lip syncin Bhupinder’s voice, and Hema Malini who plays a visually challenged girl who despite her handicap is a keen dancer.
This lovely song is a different kind of a song not only for R D Burman, but also for Hema MNalini and Jeetendra. Hema Malini, the reigning lead actress of the time took the “daring” step of playing a role like this. Likewise Jeetendra plays a serious sombre role in this movie which is far removed from his popular image as jumping jack.
This song was originally supposed to be a song to mark Jeetendra’s 70th birthday which was on April 7, and Peevesie’s mom asked me to post this song on that occasion. But she asked me to do that literally at the 11th hour, viz. at about 11 PM on april 7, and it was not possible to discuss that song at such short notice, because listening to the song, getting the lyrics right etc is time consuming exercise. Nevertheless, being late by a couple of days is not all that bad. We can still greet Jeetendra a happy birthday belatedly with this refresingly different song.
So here is this lovely semi classical song from “Kinaara” (1977) which can still touch one’s heert strings. Comments on YT mention that the tabla on this song was played by Pt Samta Prasad aka Gudai Maharaj, a leading exponent of tabla, who had a soft corner for R D Burman. Pt Samta Prasad has played tabla for R D Burman in quite a few movies. Apart from “Kinaara”(1977), “Sholay”(1975) is a notable example.

Should also mention that this was originally composed and sung by Karta [S D Burman] as “Madhu Brindabone Dole Radha” – http://doridro.net/download/Indian%20Bangla%20Songs/Indian%20Bangla%20Adhunik/SD%20Barman/SD%20Barman%20-%20Madhu%20Brindabone/02%20-%20Dole%20Radha%20Madhu%20Brindabone.mp3.html

hi atul
thanks for putting up this song. and sorry for having sent it late around 7 in the evening. actually the TV channels were featuring all the good songs of Jeetu through the day & i wondered y!!!! then our good friend (wikipedia) and CNN-IBN came to my aid & provided the info i was looking for viz: it being his 70th birthday.:-))
and then began my quest for a suitable song to send to you and i found that whatever song i thought of we already have in atuldom. and i also discovered that the most unique (by Jeetu standards) was not there. and when i turned to my Peevesie for help she was busy preparing for her semester ends otherwise i wud have been able to send the lyrics with all the “Tha Dhin Tha” without missing a single beat. (she learns classical dance you see so she can hear all notations clearly)
thats y u had to go through the trouble of hearing and writing the lyrics. sorry to have troubled you
