Kabhi kabhi mere dil

“Miss Cocacola” (1955) is the only movie where Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali worked together. Shammi Kapoor never got to watch the movie and when he felt like watching it in his later years for the sake of nostalgia, the prints of this movie were all gone.
Our own inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh beat Shammi Kapoor hollow when it came to watching this movie. He watched the movie and regretted it. Here is what he has to say about this movie :-
MISS COCA COLA-1955,a Danny film release was directed by Kedar Kapoor.Though the cast and the Director of this film were very strong, still the story-s/p and Dialogues by Bekal Amritsari were so weak that even OP’s music could not save it from fading prematurely.
Actually,3/4 th of the film footage was used to describe the misfortunes befalling on the Heroine and the Hero meets the Heroine after the Interval only.
Ganga’s(Geeta Bali) father can not pay 1001 rs. to the Groom in her marriage. To see the marriage thru, he goes and steals the money, but Police come to the marriage venue and arrest him for Murder and Theft.Despite efforts of the Lawyer,he is convicted and sentenced to death.
Ganga does labour work, sister Madhe washes others’ utensils and brother Pappoo does odd jobs.Pappoo is knocked down under the car of Kamal(Shammi Kapoor) owner of Cafe Glass. He helps the sisters.Madhu is sent to Poona and Ganga becomes dancer Miss Coca Cola in the Cafe Glass.Kamal falls in her love. Together they track the real murderer and get Ganga’s father released etc etc.
A totally unbelieveable story with no punches, nothing special and even OP Nayyar’s music lackluster, the film met its nemesis in a short time.
The movie was poor but the songs of this movie live on. It is good that the audio of this movie are still available and listening to them is a wonderful experience.
Take this song for example. I heard this song, sung by Asha Bhonsle for the first time only just now and I loved it. What a lovely song to listen to.
This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
O P Nayyar had used the voices of Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhonsle in this movie and it is not clear which singer sang for which actor in which songs. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)
kabhi kabhi
mere dil
kabhi kabhi mere dil
khoob mazaa aataa hai
jab ke dil ki kali jaati hai khil
kabhi kabhi
mere dil
ae
kehte hain do deewaane
rangeen jawaan afsaane
kehte hain do deewaane
rangeen jawaan afsaane
jhoom ke
ae
jhoom ke
kuchch kehti hai dhadkan
aur nazar jaati hai mil
kabhi kabhi
mere dil
kabhi kabhi mere dil
khoob mazaa aataa hai
jab ke dil ki kali jaati hai khil
kabhi kabhi
mere dil
ae
kaali kaali raaton mein
jab haath ho unn haathon mein
kaali kaali raaton mein
jab haath ho unn haathon mein
nainon mein
ae
nainon mein
armaan ke deepak
hote hain jhilmil jhilmil
kabhi kabh
mere dil
kabhi kabhi mere dil
khoob mazaa aataa hai
jab ke dil ki kali jaati hai khil
kabhi kabhi
mere dil
ae
chalte hain jab hil mil ke
behosh musaafir dil ke
chalte hain jab hil mil ke
behosh musafir dil ke
chaar kadam
chaar kadam chalne se pehle
aa jaati hai khud manzil
kabhi kabhi mere dil
kabhi kabhi mere dil
khoob mazaa aataa hai
jab ke dil ki kali jaati hai khil
kabhi kabhi
mere dil

That is interesting — the story of MISS COCA-COLA and AAYA SAWAN JHOOM KE — are similar, but one failed miserably and the second was a hit. Actually it is not the story which is the main criteria for the success of a film. Much depends on the treatment and period of release. This could be a great matter of research.

Ah, what a shame that the movie was a washout. OP’s music is fabulous though. What a lovely song.
