Ham tumse poochhte hain

Posted on: August 11, 2012

When I was growing up as a kid in 1970s, I was a very enthusiastic cricket statistician. By going through various resources, I had painstakingly collected details about all the test matches that were ever played till then. Maintaining those records is no longer necessary for cricket lovers now that we are in the era of internet and comprehensive cricket related statistics are available online.

Raja, growing up simultaneously in the neighbouring state was also doing just the same with cricket statistics.

Now that both of us are into old Hindi movie songs, we like to maintain statistics about these songs as well. and I must say that maintaining such statistics (unlike cricket statistics) about Hindi movie songs is required since such statistics are not readily available. Our “stats” page, as well as the various tags (that one sees on the right of the blog and categories (that one sees on the bottom of each post) are the various ways of maintaining these statistics online. In addition, I also keep a record of all the songs posted in the blog in an excel sheet and in an access database. Going through them can sometimes give me valuable information about the songs posted in the blog.

Sometimes I come across isolated nuggets of information about songs (the way I used to collect such information about cricket in the past) and add that information to my existing knowledge base. That way I update my information.

A few hours ago, Raja e mailed me a link to Geet Dutt’s official site which he had come across. Raja shared with me some interesting information about Geet Dutt’s songs. Geeta Dutt had sung the most number of songs with Chitragupta (nearly 100 songs). Geeta Dutt had sung most number of her duets with Rafi (about 155) and the most number of these duets (30) were under the music direction of Chitragupta.

Raja, armed with this information checked up in the blog. He was disappointed to note that only 5 Rafi-Geeta Dutt duets are there in the blog.

This information got me excited too. I ran a query on my access database and found that the blog has 49 Rafi-Geeta Dutt duets as of now. So nearly one third of all Rafi Geeta Dutt duets have already been discussed in the blog.

Then why is it so that Raja got a figure of just 5 in the blog ? He looked at the tag of “Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet” under “duets” on the right side which mentions a figure of 5. The reason is that I have thought of these tags only recently and I have yet to apply these tags on all the posts especially the previous posts. As of now, the tags are fully applied on some other duet combinations, viz Rafi-Lata, Rafi-Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar-Lata etc and gradually I will make sure that these tags represent the full picture. I will update the “Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet” tag today itself after I am done with the posts for the day.

Here is the 50th Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet in the blog. This song is from “Hamaari Shaan” (1951). This movie was a Deepak Pictures production. It was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Durga Khote, Yakub, Agha, Umakant, S. Nazir, Yashodhara Katju, Sharda, David Abraham, S. N. Tripathi, Veera etc in it.

This Rafi-Geeta Dutt duet is written by Anjum Jaipuri and music is composed by Chitragupta. Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Raja.

Out of the 49 Rafi Geeta Dutt duets in the blog, as many as 18 are composed by O P Nayyar. With this duet the blog only has four such duets composed by Chitragupta. Now that I have become aware of this statistics, I will look forward to posting the remaining such duets as well. In the meanwhile here is this nice forgotten gem from “Hamaari Shaan” (1951).

Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to guess about the picturisation of this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

Song-Ham tumse poochhte hain (Hamaari Shaan)(1951) Singers-Geeta Dutt, Rafi, Lyrics-Anjum Jaipuri, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics(Provided by Raja)

Hum tumse poochhte hain
sach sach hamen bataaana
Kya tumko aa gayaa hai
dil leke muskuraana
dil leke muskuraana
hum tumse poochhte hain
sach sach hamen bataana
aankhon ne tumko dekhaa
dil kyon hua nishaana
dil kyon hua nishaana

keh do ki zindagi ke
sapne jawaan rahenge
keh do ki zindagi ke
sapne jawaan rahenge
hogi wahaan mohabbat
hum tum jahaan rahenge
hogi wahaan mohabbat
hum tum jahaan rahenge

gaayenge milke nazren
umeed ka taraana
kya tumko aa gayaa hai
dil leke muskuraana
dil leke muskuraana
hum tumse poochhte hain
sach sach hamen bataana
aankhon ne tumko dekhaa
dil kyun hua nishaana
dil kyun hua nishaana

masti bhari nigaahen
sharma ke phir jhuka den
masti bhari nigaahen
sharma ke phir jhuka den

dil ko churaane waale
chupke se muskura de
dil ko churaane waale
chupke se muskura de
duniya sunaa rahi hai
kabse yahi fasaana
aankhon ne tumko dekhaa
dil kyon hua nishaana
dil kyon hua nishaana

hum tumse poochhte hain
sach sach hamen bataaana
kya tumko aa gayaa hai
dil leke muskuraana
dil leke muskuraana

This is a classic jeering love duet of 50’s era, a sweet, charming duet.
The paragraph # 7 that start with “This information…” you have use name Lata instead Geeta.

Wow! That was quick! And what a nice write-up too, detailing the thought process and communication of just a few hours ago.

Am glad that the tagging will be updated soon – I glance a lot at the tags and do check out the stats page also quite often (usually to see whether somebody is close to a milestone – that is always exciting :-)).

I was looking for something else yesterday – and happened to stumble upon the Geeta Dutt site. I think I may have seen it before but it did not register. Wealth of information there.

Coming to this song, I listened to it again today here – and it is so lovely! The voices of Geeta Dutt and Rafi saab (of THAT era), with the pleasant music of Chitragupt – you don’t need video to enjoy it. Just the melody is SO beautiful!!!

Thanks for posting this so quickly, Atul.

I guess this is the video? But it says “Circus Queen” here, so I am a bit confused. But the tune here is same as the one posted on the blog.
