Dost dost na raha pyaar pyaar na raha

on:“Sangam” (1964) was a R K Films production movie. It was produced and directed by Raj Kapoor. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Vyjyantimala, Iftekhar, Raj Mehra, Nana Palsikar, Lalita Pawar, Achala Sachdev, Hari Shivdasani etc in it.
As many as five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past, but quite a few well known and even iconic songs from this movie are yet to be discussed.
Here is one such song from the movie. I have heard this song many a times, but watched the picturisation of the song for the first time only just now. The picturisation is quite superb and it enhances the effect of the song. The lyrics of song are superb and conveys the feelings of the hear quite tellingly. The lyrics by Shailendra are simple yet highly effective.
Mukesh is the singer and Shankar Jaikishan composed the music. The picturisation shows Raj Kapoor singing this song seated on a grand piano. Rajendra Kumar is on the verge of taking the sip from his glass when he hears the accusing works “dost dost na raha” and and sip never reaches the lip. And Vyjyanti Mala too is shocked by the insinuation contained in the song that she and Rajendra Kumar were carrying out an affair in the absence of Raj Kapoor. What will Hindi movie do, if such misunderstandings were not there in the story.
It is a song that has deservingly gone on to become an evergreen song.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
dost dost na raha
pyaar pyaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitbaar na raha
dost dost na raha
pyaar pyaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitebaar na raha
amaanaten main pyaar ki
gaya thha jis ko saunp kar
woh mere dost tum hi thhe
tum hi to thhe
jo zindagi ki raah mein
bane thhe mere humsafar
woh mere dost tum hi thhe
tum hi to thhe
saare bhed khul gaye
raazdar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitbaar na raha
gale lagin seham seham
bhare gale se bolteen
woh tum na theen to kaun thha
tum hi to theen
safar ke waqt mein palak pe
motiyon ko tolteen
woh tum na theen to kaun thha
tum hi to thheen
nashe ki raat dhal gayi
ab khumaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbar na raha
aitbar na raha
dost dost na raha
pyaar pyaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitbaar na raha

When Jaikishen claimed in public that yeh mera prem patra… song was his contribution, he unwittingly broke the tacit understanding between the duo to refrain from claiming any particular song to be his led to the breakage of their long and fruitful association.

Nitin-ji, I didn’t know that Jaikishen’s claim that ‘Ye mera prem patra padhkar…’ was his contribution led to the break up of this magical duo! But another factor that led to their breakup was Shanker introducing singer Sharada. Jaikishen was never fond of her, while Shanker insisted on giving her songs in all the movies. This was a crucial factor that tragically led to the split in the partnership!

Some of the above comments insinuate that the team of Shankar & Jaikishan got splitted up mid-way. As fas as I know, they continued this partnership till Jaikishan’s death (till death do us ‘part). Even after that, Shankar continued with the name ‘Shankar-Jaiskishan’, in honour and memory of his dear friend and colleague.
They may have had their differences from time to time (like who doesn’t!), but overall it was a truly enduring and very cordial partnership, despite the fact that mega-stardom tried and tested it with some serious strain.
As the saying goes, success goes to one’s head, hence one tends to become filled with pride and self-glory. SJ team was the number one music director for a long time. The fame, money, honour, respect and reputation that they commanded in their heyday would tempt and trouble any mortal human being. Despite all these factors, they remained (mostly) united. Full credit to them. And as for us, owing to this wonderful team, we are fortunate to get to listen, savour and treasure scores upon scores of magical, enchanting songs.

Atulji,
Thanks Atifji for the song. Bahut hi dard bhara hai Mukeshji ne is gaane mein. I would say because of Mukehji’s voice, RK could portray his feelings on the screen.
One para is missing-
wafaa ka leke naam jo
dhadak rahe thhe har ghadi
wo mere nek nek dil
tumhi to ho
jo muskuraake reh gaye
zahar ki jab suyi gadi
wo mere nek nek dil
tumhi to ho
ab kisi ka mere dil
intezaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitbaar na raha
dost dost na raha
pyaar pyaar na raha
zindagi hamein tera
aitbaar na raha
aitbaar na raha
I have this entire song in the CD. Can someone find and post the video clip of the entire song?
