Abke na saawan barse

Posted on: September 4, 2012

While listening to songs, music lovers appreciate the singers as well as the music, but the lyrics are often taken for granted. In reality, it is the lyrics that are the soul of these songs which give these songs their life and their personality.

When the music director explains the situation of a song to the lyricist and asks him to write a song for the occasion, then it is not an easy task. For once, the situation for a Hindi movie song is not something that is being encoutered for the fist time. Hundreds of songs may have been written on the same situation and the same theme.

Take the situation of this movie “Kinaara”(1977). The leading lady is missing her beloved. Now what is new in this situation ? The leading lady misses her beloved in every Hindi movie and sings a song on the occasion in every movie. The challenge that the lyricist faces is to write a song that does not appear to be copied from the older songs on this theme . It may be old wine, but the packaging must be new.

I am quite curious to know how Gulzar and R D Burman interacted while discussing song situations. We know for sure that R D Burman was not very conversant with Hindi/Urdu poetry and Gulzar obviously was no musician, but still the two of them managed to get the best out of each other.

Here, in a “missing the beloved” situation, Gulzar comes up with lyrics that stand out and the listener fels like he is listening to something refreshingly different on the subject.

This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Hema Malini who is missing her beloved (Dharmedra).

Come to think of it, R D Burman was not required to explain the song situation to Gulzar in this case. Gulzar was the director as well as the writer of this movie. So he was already familiar with the story. 🙂 Yes, this certainly helps while writing songs for a movie when you write the story as well as direct the movie. This gives you a holistic view of the situation. 🙂

Song-Abke na saawan barse (Kinaara)(1977) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

I think some of the movies of 70’s…was very much like 60’s.
And Dharmendra/Hema…did fit well in that mold created by Raaj/dilip/Dev —and Hema took place from vyjayanthimala/Padmini/Nargis..And Lata is Lata…ever green.
But some times I think Hema/Dharam private life…so parallel to all these Hollywood famous couples…they get married have children and than bye/bye…]
I know Hemaji is not divorced but Dharamji is not staying with her. He is still married to his first wife. And as always…Indian wife take back her husband than counter part western wife.
I saw few pictures of Esha Deol wedding…To me, Dharamji look more as a guest than a host or a father of a bride.
