Justju jiski thhi usko to na paaya hamne

on:By 1977, Rekha’s career was going nowhere and movie critics commented that she was wasting her career like Faryal. Faryal was held as the gold standard of career wasters those days, though I suppose Randhir Kapoor was not far behind her.
As far as Rekha was concered, she matured almost overnight, underwent a miraculous makeover and was a transformed person from 1978 onwards ! The first movie where moviewatchers witnessed a transformed Rakha was “Ghar”(1978) and from there onwards she never looked back. She became career conscious and a thorough professional as an actress and her career skyrocketed.
“Umraao Jaan”(1981) could well be the zenith of Rekha’s career. Movies on the life of UMrao Jaan have been made earlier too, but this movie established Rekha in the minds of public as Umraao Jaan. It is similar to the way how many people of an older generation imagine that Emperor Akbar looked like Prithviraj Kapoor. 🙂
“Umraao Jaan” (1981) was a high point in the careers of many people associated with this movie. The movie won critical acclaim, popular acclaim as well as official acclaim. The movie won two filmfare awards -for best direction (Muzaffar Ali) and best music direction (Khayyam). The movie also won two national film awards- for best actress (Rekha) and best music direction (Khayyam). Khayyam being honoured as the best music director by public as well as the Goverment is something quite rare and may not have happened before.
As many as four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth song from this movie. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is lip synced by Rekha as a kotha song, with Farooque Sheikh present as her client. Lyrics are by Shaharyar.

The full name is Umrao jaan-e-Adaa. ‘Adaa’ is the takhallus or pen name, which is there in the final sha’ir.

Rita Rani stayed at our place for few months in the early days as her father Kaulchacha (as we used to call him) was my father’s friend. I told her upfront that she is not a heroine material. She did not like it. May be she realizes now. She married to the TV artiste(dadu of Balika Badhu)

While watching this film, I observed that this ghazal was preceded by two she’rs sung by Asha Bhosle in the same beher (metre).
The video of the full ghazal.
Lyrics of two she’rs:
tum se bichhade hain to ab kis se milaati hai hamen
zindagi dekhiye kyaa rang dikhaati hai hamen
zindagi dekhiye kyaa rang dikhaati hai hamen
gardish-e-waqt ka kitna bada ehsaan hai tera
ye zameen chaand se behatar nazar aati hai hamen
ye zameen chaand se behatar nazar aati hai hamen
