I have just found a Rafi-Lata duet, from the film “Naach Ghar”. This is a film released in 1959, with N. Datta as Music Director and Saahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. This movie seems to be full of duets, with as many as four Lata-Rafi duets, one Asha – Rafi and one Geeta Dutt- Rafi.
I was able to find only Audio link of this song. But with the music and mood of the song it is easy to guess that it is a “Roadside Tamasha” song. The harmonium and dance music interlude is the hint. As Iqbal has said :

About what transpired with Lata Mangeshkar’s “Mumbai Mirror” interview, has left a bad taste in the mouth. The day it appeared and I read it just by chance, while passing someone’s table in the office. This was on the back page of tabloid supplement. I was hugely disappointed when I read that whole interview. Today putting the incident in perspective I think it was about Mohammed Rafi that Lata Mangeshkar could think in terms of asking for an apology and getting one. If the situation is reversed, this similar scenario is impossible to imagine, by anyone. The dividing line is humbleness and arrogance.
Rafi sahab died young and Lata Mangeshkar in now too old to change her stubborn ways. And the television media had a field day declaring that ‘ Lata and Rafi fought over royalty ‘. With no inkling of who wanted how much(Royalty), some of them never bothered to explore the issue. Hence the relevance of this song which Saahir Ludhianvi wrote more than half century ago and Lata and Rafi sang in tandem.

Exactly. Lata has no reason to dig this issue after Rafi passed away 32 years ago.Secondly her follwing remarks are more painful to all the Rafi fans.
Lataji went on to say that peace was brokered by the composer Jaikishen, who got Rafisaab to write her a letter of apology. “I got the letter and ended the cold war. But whenever I’d see him, the hurt would return,” Lataji told Mumbai Mirror.

Truly said by Sundeep..Neither Jaikishan nor Rafi are alive today to say what actually transpired.. What matters is that they ended the standoff and music lovers were benefitted by the same.
The greatness of an individual lies in forgiving &forgetting which should have been the appropriate course of action.

In a nutshell, Mohammed Rafi always had class. Lata has always been crass! She stifled competition ruthlessly. Vani Jairam will testify to that. The so called Nightingale of India is a vulture! Vani Jairam had a sensational entry into Hindi movies with her rendering of the beautiful “Bol re papihara papihara…” in ‘Guddi’. Vasant Desai, th music director of ‘Guddi’ had already recorded this song. He wanted Lata to sing the other song, “Hum ko man ki shakti denaa…” Her Highness wanted to sing the “Bol re papihara….” too! She tried acting high and mighty with Vasant Desai. He simply got the other song too recorded in Vani’s voice.
I’ve heard Pandit Ravi Shankar too didn’t buckle under her cheap tantrums when he wanted her to record some songs for ‘Meera’. He couldn’t stand her nonsense and dropped her like a brick and got ALL the songs recorded with Vani Jairam again.
P Susheela and S Janaki are Lata’s contemporaries in the South. Lata ought to learn some courtesy and humbleness from these two venerable ladies.

I don’t remember exactly where/when, but I had read somewhere that when Lataji was approached to sing all the bhajans of Meera, she put the condition that she would, only if his brother, Hridaynath Mangeshkar would get the contract of MD. This “condition” was rejected by Gulzar saab or may be by the producer. Don’t know if this is true.
BTW, Meera-79 ke gaane to subah mein hamare ghar mein aaj bhi sab sunte hai. Can’t imagine “someone else” singing these bhajans other than VJ.

You’re right, Khyati-ji. I stand corrected. I’d wrongly stated that Pandit Ravi Shankar had got fed up with Lata Mangeshkar and had had Vani Jairam sing the songs in ‘Meera’
Yes, I can’t imagine anyone else singing those Meera bhajans……..

Mujhe nahin pata, how far this read story of mine is true. You may be right or may be both stories are true.
After writing my previous comment, I got an email that Pt. Ravi Shankar is performing live in Los Angeles area on Nov 4th, 2012 at the age of 92. I may plan to see his live show third time. 🙂
