Ae dil e naakaam

Posted on: October 22, 2012

This article is written by Shekhar Gupta, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

With Kundan Lal Saigal towering above every other male singing star and singer of his era, it was inevitable that many a new-comer tried to sing in the Saigal idiom in the 1940s. Mukesh got noticed sounding like Saigal in Dil jalta hai to jalne de in Pehli Nazar (1945); the self-confessed Saigal devotee Kishore Kumar sang Marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon in Ziddi (1948) and Jagmag-jagmag karta nikla chaand poonam ka pyaara in Ziddi (1949) in the Saigal style; C. H. Atma always sounded like Saigal.

What is perhaps less noticed is that Late Mohammad Rafi, arguably the greatest male playback singer of his era before Kishore Kumar stole a march over him in 1969 with the release of Araadhana, too sang a few numbers in the Saigal idiom. Actually Rafi also featured in a number with Saigal as he sang the concluding lines of Saigal’s Mere sapnon ki raani in Shahjehan (1946) but, naturally, sounding not like Saigal but like himself when singing with Saigal himself.

With no such constraint, however, in another movie a year earlier, he sang Aye dil-e-nakaam ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de in the Saigal style in Hamara Sansar (1945) under the baton of Pandit Gobindram. I could find almost nothing about this movie except that one web-site mentions Rajkumari, Ranjana, Sushil Kumar, Jivan, Umakant and Shukla as the stars. I have jotted down Ramesh Gupta’s lyrics as I listened to the number. I look forward to our knowledgeable readers to shed more light on the movie.

Song-Ae dil e naakaam (Hamaara Sansaar)(1945) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Ramesh Gupta, MD-Pt Govindram

Lyrics

Aye dil-e-nakaam
ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de
aye dil-e-nakaam ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de
apne armaanon ki duniya ke minaaren tod de
aye dil-e-nakaam
ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de

apne begaane huye
jin par ke tujhko naaz thha
apne begaane huye
jin par ke tujhko naaz tha
saaf-dil tha tuu magar kuchh unke dil mein raaz thha
matlabi duniya pe tuu aitbaar laana chhod de
aitbaar laana chhod de
aye dil-e-nakaam
ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de

bharosa chhod de kal ka
bharosa chhod de kal ka
mitaa de aarzoo dil ki
takaaza hai ye kismat ka
chala chal raah manzil ki
chala chal raah manzil ki
jinko hai kal ka bharosa,
unko kal par chhod de
aye dil-e-nakaam
ab jeene ki tamanna chhod de
