Raat piya ke sang jaagi re sakhi

Posted on: November 20, 2012

“Prem Parbat” (1973) was an Art Maker production. It was directed by Ved Rahi. The movie had Hema Malini, Satish Kaul, Rehana Sultan, Nana Palsikar etc in it.

The makers of “Prem Parbat” (1973) ran into financial difficulities and the financiers of this movie seized the prints of this movie before the movie could be released a little while after the movie was released. As a result this movie suffered the fate of those movies which were not available to majority of public except those who managed to see it early.

The records of its songs were released and these songs went on to become popular. The song Ye dil aur unki nigaahon ke saaye is easily the most well known song from this movie.

As many as three songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog in the past.

Today (20 november) is the birthday of Minu Purushottam. On this occasion, here is a song from “Prem Parbat” (1973) which is sung by Minu Purushottam. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath and later by Prakashchandra too.

Song-Raat piya ke sang jaagi re sakhi (Prem Parbat)(1973) Singer-Minoo Purushottam, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar akhtar, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

raat piyaa ke sang jaagi re sakhi
raat piyaa ke sang jaagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi
raat piyaa ke sang
ha ha ha ha

sainyaanji ne jaadoo pheraa
sainyaanji ne jaadoo pheraa
baanhon ka daalaa gheraa
karke zaraa andheraa
anchraa jo khainchaa meraa
god piyaa ki tang laagi re sakhi
god piyaa ki tang laagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi
raat piyaa ke sang
laagi na sakhi

sainyaanji ne daakaa daalaa
sainyaanji ne daakaa daalaa
uljhaa laton mein baalaa
bikhri galey ki maalaa
ha
bhadki badan ki jwaalaa
devdhanush rang laagi re sakhi
devdhanush rang laagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi
raat piyaa ke sang jaagi re sakhi

gajraa suhaanaa tootaa
gajraa suhaanaa tootaa
kajraa nayan ka chhootaa
sab tan bhayaa re jhoothaa
jitnaa sataayaa lootaa
aur bhi baanke ang laagi re sakhi
aur bhi baanke ang laagi re sakhi
tan ki chhupi tarang jaagi re sakhi
tan ki chhupi tarang jaagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi
chain padaa jo ang laagi re sakhi

Atul ji,
Not many people know that the Heroine of PREM PARVAT(1973) was HEMA MALINI and NOT Rehana Sultaan.
The movie was produced by Shanti Sagar under the banner of Art Makers and the Director was Ved Raahi(Paraya Dhan,Sanyasi,Beimaan,Oonche Log etc.).He also did the story,Screenplay and dialogues.Music was by Jaidev Verma.
The story tells of a heart rending saga of an orphan girl, whose body and soul are divided between her aged husband and an young Forest officer whom she loves.
Being wife of the Chaudhari, has she any right to expect love from another man forms the crux of the film.
After this film was released,it got stuck in legal cases,as the producer had no money to pay the artists and crew members. It may be the reason why the film is not available on videos.

Atul ji,
MINU PURUSHOTTAM is a name not very well known to many today. Her best rendition was ‘ Huzure wala,jo ho izazat..’ with Asha in’Ye raat phir na aayegi’-1960.
She was born in Patiyala on 20-11-1944.She being music oriented from childhood, got encouragement from family and was trained by Pt.Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale. She sarted singing on Radio from 17th year.
Composer Harbanslal gave her first break in ‘Safed Ghod Kala Sawar’-1960.She got mostly B and C grade films to sing.Upto 1980(Sajan mere main sajan ki) she sang in 60 films about 100 songs.h
Her voice was almost like Kamal Barot or Usha Mangeshkar.

Nana Palsikar plays the old man.
Rehana Sultan plays the wife.
Satish Kaul plays the young man.

That is very clear from the vinyl cover of Prem Parbat which does not show Hema Malini.

Hema Malini is mentioned in the starcast, but I doubt she was the lead actress of this movie. My guess is that she probably did just one song or something in the movie.

bluefire ji,
You are only partly right, but I dont blame you, because most of the stories behind the scene remain obscure, unknown to most people.

The producer, Shanti Sagar had cast Hema Malini in the lead and the shooting of the film was nearing completion, when Hema Malini started playing traunt.First she asked for her entire fees immediately. Then she started missing the shootings etc.The producer had a big fight with her and her manager.

Consequently, she was thrown out of the film and as a challenge,Rehana Sultan-a B grade actress was brought in.The Hema parts were reshot and the film was released. However just to prove his right, the producer kept two songs filmed on Hema Malini in the film intact(which had no reference to the story, anyway).

The cedits do not show Hema malini ,but if you check the Filmography list of Hema Malini,Prem Parbat is mentioned as her film.

During this period, the personal life of HM was in termoil, with Sanjeev kumar and Jeetendra vying for her hand in marriage. The
Hema-Jeetendra jodi was almost fixed when it fizzled at the last minute.Later during Sholey-75,she was involved in Dharmendra.

Thanks Arunji. I havent seen the movie. I was just mentioning the fact that on the vinyl cover, Hema Malini’s name was credited along with Rehana Sultan, Satish Kaul, Nana Palsikar and Agha.

It would be very unusual for Hema Malini to take up such a movie with the likes of Satish Kaul at that stage of her career, after hits like Sharafat (1970), Johnny Mera Naam (1970), Andaz (1971), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), etc.

One would think she just might be doing a cameo as a favor to director Ved Rahi who worked with her in Paraya Dhan (1971) and Sanyasi (1975) later on, just to make the movie commercially viable because of her name.

The story line and the rest of the star cast, nature of movie, etc, seems actually very suitable for someone like Rehana Sultan. So if thats what it ended up to, may be it was best for everyone involved.

Regards.

bluefire ji,
your surprise that how HM accepted such a starcast and the storyline is absolutely valid. But the one thing which was not mentioned by me was that the film had started in 1969 itself, but ended up in 1973 for release. If you see the fashion of clothes etc in the film, you can immediately make out that it was an old film.
No wonder that after good hit films in her kitty,HM would have acted
like the way did.

I love this song equally as Ye dil aur unki …
other songs of her… from (1) Do Boond Paani…peetalki mori gagari…
(2) ni main yaar manana ni (Daag-1973) (3) hame yu na dekho with sita Agrawala…(zalim jadugar-1960) (4) dekhoji ek bala jogi from China town with Rafi.
I think her voice similar to Jagjit Kaur, and three sisters surinder, Narinder and parkash kaur.

I love the song “yeh dil aur unki”. Wish the negatives can be restored atleast for the song. Lata’s voice for Hema is perfect. I wish to see the scenery, dance and facial/eye expressions of Hema for the song. The tune and music seems to be from a Himachali tribe. The lyrics of the song are mind blowing. My imagination shows me a nice forest with mountains, rising sun, full flowing river, beautiful trees, flowers, birds…

I saw this movie in early 70s. The story was about the forced marriage of a young woman. Parents in a poor family can’t afford “dowry” to get their daughter (Rehana Sultan, who won the National acting award for her role in Dastak) married to a rich old man (Nana Palsikar). He is too old to consummate the marriage but takes good care of his young wife. She however has an affair with a young man (Satish Kaul), bringing ignominy to the family as the neighbors/community finds out about it. Nana Palsikar tells Rehana something to the effect that “Yeh karna tha to chupke se kar leti. Saari duniya ko bataane ki kya zaroorat thi.” The movie had shades of “Ryan’s daughter” (Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles) but in an Indian setting. There was no song filmed on Hema Malini. She had no appearance in the movie
There was a nice humorous wedding song in it. I have been searching for it but I can find neither the audio nor the lyrics. I remember the tune very well. The first couple of lines were:

Banno choodi na khankaao mera banna dar na jaaye.
Banno ankhen na dikhaao mera banna dar na jaaye”,

It was sung by MInoo Purushottam and Jagjit Kaur as I recall. Does anyone know if a copy of the song exists?
