You must have heard the famous quotation,”Politics is the last resort of a scoundrel”. Though it is not true in ALL cases,it is used since long.
Similarly, the last resort of young boys who ran away from homes to Bombay in the 30s and 40s (and may be even today) was Hindi Films. For a growing Film industry there was a need for actors, singers, writers, technicians etc. Quantity was always available but quality was questionable. This field did not attract the educated gents from good families. So, whenever any educated i.e. a Graduate joined the industry, he was most welcome and he too would flaunt his degrees proudly. Thus you had a Lyricist named Moti,B.A. and Miss Kamal,B.A. in those days.
Many literary figures, poets, novelists, dramatists etc were averse to joining films. A glaring case in point is that of the famous Hindi writer Bhagvati Charan Verma. He had written the dialogues of the cult film KISMET-1943 of Bombay Talkies. However when the film was completed, he developed cold feet and told the producers not to put his name as a dialogue writer in the credits of the film,lest, he feared, he would be ridiculed in the literary circle for stooping so low as to write for films ! So the names of P.L.Santoshi and Shahid Latif were shown in the credits for Screenplay and dialogues!
In this scenario, when a highly educated and talented young man came to producer/director Roop K Shorey for a job, he was overjoyed and immediately employed the young man to write the story of “Ek thi ladki”-1949.
Thus entered INDERJEET SINGH JOHAR(I.S.Johar),MA. LL.B,into the film industry.
His entry on the screen as a comedian was a comedy scene itself.
It so happened that the shooting of ‘EK THI LADKI’ was in progress and as a writer, Johar was also present there. The scene was that the Heroine is chased in a river in a boat. Director Shorey asked Johar to sit in the boat following the heroine as the regular guy was absent. Johar was so nervous in his first brush with the shooting that while chasing he went past the Heroine’s boat. All the film crew burst into a laughter. A financier/distributor who was present there was so much impressed with the happenning that not only that scene was kept in the film, but also Johar’s role was enhanced to match the other comedian Majnu, in the film.
After the film EK THI LADKI became a major hit of 1949 with the iconinc song “Lara lappa”, Roop Shorey featured the pair of Johar and Majnu in several films. They formed a comedy pair on the lines of ‘Bob Hope-Bing Crosby’ pair of Hollywood in the 50s. Johar-Majnu even did a ‘Yogi Dance’ In the film “Hum sab chor hain”-56, the way Bob Hope had done with a cane in hand etc.
In the 60s, Johar coupled with Mehmood and did ‘Johar-mehmood in….'(Goa,Kashmir,Hongkong,Bombay etc) exactly on the lines of ‘The road to…..’ series done by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
In all these films his Heroine was Sonia Sahni.
I.S.Johar, due to his polished English and comic talent was one of the earliest Indian actors to work in few British and some American films.
I have personally liked his comedy in Hum sab chor hain-56 and his triple role as pehlaram,Doojaram and Teejaram in Johnny Mera Naam-1970.
Johar was born in Lahore on 16-2-1920.Once he was attending a marriage in the family at Ludhiyana ,when Partition took place and the riots started. It prevented him to return to Lahore.
he decided to remain here and try his luck in films at Bombay.
He was married 5 times. His daughter Ambika also acted in few films. Johar directed a couple of films and the noted director of blockbusters later,Yash Chopra was his assistant in those days.
I.S.Johar died on 10-3-1984.
We will see a comic song sung by all comedians, Johar, Sunder,Bhagwan and Maruti. The film is Kishore Kumar’s “BADHTI KA NAAM DADHI”-1974.
This film had a bizarre story- A cranky multibillionaire declares that he will give half of his wealth to his heir who has the longest beard in the world.The film had very amusing and unimaginable comic scenes. With Kishore Kumar is there no shortage of comedy.Bhagwan as Di.Ghussawala,Sunder as Dr.Thappadwala and Maruti as Dr.Dandawala,with even Bhappi Lahiri as Bhompoo created havoc. But the film was not very successful.probably these doctors exceeded the dose of comedy !

My best friend who is my kids’ piano teacher is also parsi. Very talented, religious lady. She has a diya/lamp in the house which she keeps lit all time. They worship Agni. Whenever her Mother visits, she shares so many facts about their religion and community. She says there are only approx one hundred thousand Parsis left in the world.
Thanks Arunji for the info on I S Johar and this song. KK must have been helped by some Gujarati or Parsi to translate the Hindi lyrics. I am just guessing. This must be one of few songs in Hindi films where the entire song is in the language other than Hindi. Again it’s my guess. Few words in the songs needs correction.
The first word is hoon (myself) kaun chhoon (who am I)
first stanza fifth line- kevo (kind) taaro khel chhe (what kind of game is yours)
second stanza sixth line- gammat chhe, ke rammat chhe, rammat chhe…

(having stayed in Mumbai for so long,one gets to learn Gujrati,anyway).
Yes,it is one of the very few songs of different language completely,in a Hindi film,though it is not the First.
The first Non Hindi song in a Hindi film was in film MUFLIS AASHIQ a 1932 film.It was a Bengali song-Bhalo bashi tomay……
In the same film there also was a Punjabi song-Tusi jaao sai….
Then in 1933,in film Karma Devika Rani sang a complete English song-Now the Moon her light….
In 1939,Shanta Hublikar sang a multi language song(Gujrati/Telugu/Tamil/Punjabi and Bangla) in film AADMI.
There are some more songs also..

Arunji,
You have done an excellent job for writing 99.99% of these Gujarati/Parsi words correctly. Thoda shabd ahiyaan tyaan thayi gaya chhe. 🙂 (thode bahut shabd yahaan wahaan ho gaye hai) I have learned Marathi for four years during my high school years and have watched so many Marathi old movies on Doordarshan during that time period. Lekin ab itne saal baad Marathi gaana likhne jaaun to pata nahin padhne waalon ki kya doordasha/haalat hogi. 😦 I mean to say, it’s your love and passion for Hindi cinema that you wrote this song in Gujarati. Salute for that.
Thanks for the info about other non-hindi songs. I knew only one English Song you have mentioned and that also after reading one comment on this blog. I just saw the Aadmi-39 song- Ab kisliye kal ki baat kati hansi khushi mein raat….on YT. As you have mentioned, the song is in five different laungages. I wonder who will post that song on the blog 😆 It will be a team work of our contributors.
If you don’t mind, here are few more correct words-
Fouth stanza, first line- tamaaro dimaag phari gayo chhe
Fifth stanza, eighth line- zindagi junoon (obsession) chhe
thirteen line onwards it’s gammat chhe ke rammar chhe….
Last stanza- sheth bandookwaala, shoon chhe (what’s up?)
Now, we will wait for the next actor-singer song and I am sure it will be as informative as this one. 🙂

As I have mentioned in my post earlier,the lyrics of the songs in all my posts are written by ATUL JI, as a kind help to me,as I am very poor in this field.
The entire credit of writing a Gujarati song almost to the T,goes to ATUL JI and NOT me.

I was aware of the fact that Atulji writes the lyrics. But when I read your comment-
(having stayed in Mumbai for so long,one gets to learn Gujrati,anyway).
I thought you wrote the lyrics of this particular song. My mistake/misunderstanding. Sorry about that. Now, full credit of writing this Gujarati/Parsi song goes to Atulji. Thanks Atulji.

I only know that first he was married to Rama Bans in 1943 and that Ambika and Anil were his children.I have no names of other wives,but I think Sonia Sahni was also one wife.

I was sure for this post to follow , since you taken the series on this. Only last Sunday i got to watch this on youtube, and enjoyed at lot. I thought it to be posted with the translation of Gujarati words, but this will make a very long post. I really like I S Johar. His comedy was different from rest. He had a laconic, world weary way of speaking, often as if he was in fact disgusted with the world.
I can throw light on one more wife of IS Johar. When I was growing up in Jamnagar, we happened to know the family of a Navy Officer called Sandhu. They had two beautiful daughters, one of them Minna. Later on, Minna became a model and married Jal Mistry. My cousins and I used to look at her still photographs in magazines like Femina and Filmfare.
After she broke up with Jal, she married IS Johar and was known as Minna Johar. She worked as a costume designer in some movies and worked as an extra here and there, probably by virtue of hanging out on sets.
Later she divorced IS Johar (or vice versa – I don’t know) and lived in Mumbai. I do recall my cousin telling me that she lived in Mumbai.

INDER SEN JOHAR — This is the correct name of I S Johar. Wiekipidia is wrong. IMdB is correct. If you donot mention that he replied to readers question in Filmfare’s Question Box, you will not be giving his complete introduction. The Question Box was the most popular column of Filmfare at one time. Yes, he prided himself to be so educated and considered others in the industry as uneducated which made him very unpopular and hence he could not rise to his potential. Imagione him to be the guru of Yash ji! Raj Kapoor had a better guru in Kidar Sharma.

In India’s multicultural society the Parsis have a significant position. In 775 the first Parsi (Zoroastrian) refugees arrived@ the port of Surat, (Gujarat) from Iran. And they adopt Gujarati language . Their typical dress of men…”kushti” or sacred vest, white Dagli with the black topi..
If you see Rangoli out side of the house and it’s not Diwali…means that house has a parsi resident 🙂
Very interesting song using most of gujarti words.
I.S. Johar and KK both are considered multi talented as actors, comedians, writers, producers and directors.
Now…I would say ISJ as singer…so he can be rank with KK 🙂
