Mayanagari Mumbai attracts people. Earlier, when it was BOMBAY (Bambai), it acted like a magnet for all those who wanted Name, Fame and Wealth. Bombay gave this all to the Lucky and the Desrving with both hands stretched fully.

Particularly for the Film Industry it sure acted as “The Ultimate Destination.” Whether one was an aspirant or an achiever, whether poor or rich, whether from the lower strata or from a Royal clan, everyone wanted to try his luck here.

Film Industry has seen many ‘Rags to Riches’ and also ‘Riches to Rags’ stories. Not all people coming here succeeded in getting their goal, but atleast they could survive. Bombay gave chances to everyone, you were on your own after that.

In Music field too there were stories of climbing from the from lowest to Highest and vice versa.

A simple, ordinary looking, frail girl with torn chappals and cotton saree and tightly tied hair, stood on the Platform of Malad station waiting for the Local train. Years later Lata Mangeshkar got the Highest Civilian Award ‘ Bharat Ratna’, riches, fame and respect from the world !

In MD Rafiq Gaznavi and Pt. Govind Ram’s ” Laila Majnu “-1945, the main singer was Khan Mastana and in the Chorus was a young man called Mohd.Rafi. Many years later ,in K.Asif’s film “Laila Majnu”-1976 the main singer was Mohd. Rafi and in the chorus was a Paralytic Khan Mastana ! These are the ways of Fate !!.

In Music field, there are two clear cut classes-1) Filmi Music and 2) The classical Music-a) Vocal and b) Instrumental.

Traditionally, Filmi music is considered lower than the classical music. Leading classical singers were appointed as Darbari gayaks in many kings’ courts, but for the common man he understood and enjoyed filmi music best.

Many classical music singers of repute were attracted towards films as it ensured a reach to the millions all over the subcontinent. It also gave them name, fame and money.

Whatever may be the reasons, many classical singers joined films as singers and some tried their hand becoming composers.

The singers were Begum Akhtar, Jaddanbai, Malika Pukhraj, Amir Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, D.V.Paluskar, Niyaz Ahmed Khan, Bhimsen Joshi, Vasantrao Deshpande, Kishori Amonkar, Shobha Gurtu, M S Shubhalaxmi, Laxmi Shanker, Phiroz Dastur etc etc.

Among those who tried to become Composers were- Phiroz Dastoor, Govindrao Tembe, Master Krishna Rao, Shankar rao Vyas, Ali Akbar Khan, Pt.Amarnath, Pt.Ganapat Rao, Pannalal Ghosh, Pt.Ravishanker, Bhupen Hazarika,Shiv kumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasiya etc etc.

Today we are going to look at Pt MOTIRAM a doyen of Mewat Gharana Gayaki, who also gave music to just one released and one unreleased film.

Mewati Gharana was founded in late 19th century by Ustad Ghugga Nazir Khan of Jodhpur-Rajasthan. This gharana is actually an offshoot of Gwalior Gharana and got its name from the region it flourished in -The Mewat region of Rajasthan. In the 20th century, Pt.Nathulal and Pt.Chimanlal were well known practioners of Mewati Gayaki. This tradition was passed on to Nathulal’s sons Pt. Motiram and Pt. Jyotiram. They became the Court musicians of the Naresh of Mewat.

Today the mewati Gharana gayaki is passed on th Pt.Motiram’s son Pt. Jasraj, who is a very well known singer.

While doing a Jalsa in Bombay, Pt motiram was interested in joining films. He became the assistant to Naushad for a year or so and then gave Music to LACHAK-1951 and Imaan-51(unlrealesed). Songs of Imaan were recorded but are not available now.

Pt. Motiram died in September 1976.

Every year, in the last week of November, there is a Music festival in Hyderabad, in memory of Pt. Motiram.

LACHAK-1951 was a Shri Films’ presentation, produced by Shriram Bohara, and directed by M.I.Dharamsy, it had music by Pt. Motiram.

The film had only 9 songs, but there were as many as 7 Lyricists for it. It may be some sort of a record.

There was a wonderful song by Meena Kapoor ” Unhe haal apna batana padega”. Due to reasons not known, this song was recorded but not used in the film and later it was included in the film ‘AKASH PARI’-1958, though the record mentions Lacak’s name only.

Durjan( B M Vyas) is a villainous type of Zamindar who indulges in many illegal activities. He wasnts a land plot in the coastal area of the town, to facilitate his smuggling activities. Bur Seth Laxmi Das(Ram Singh) and Rita(Kuldip Kaur) are not prepared to part with it.

Rita arranges dance programmes, as her profession. One day the main heroine of her dance group is kidnapped. Her friend Ramesh(Agha) calls Amar(Amarnath), a Private detective to investigate the case. While looking for evidence, Amar meets Kammo(Geeta Bali) and promptly falls in her love.

Kammo helps Rita by participating in the dance show. Gulabo(Nayantara) Rita’s secretary informs Durjan about all these matters.

Soon Kammo is also kidnapped. Ramesh, Rita and Amar start the search, but now Rita’s father is also kidnapped.

With the help of Police HQs, Rita and Amar locate the den of Durjan, who is holding all these people there as prisoners,to pressurise Laxmidas to sell the coastal land to him.

Durjan is caught red handed and all are rescued. Durjan goes to jail and Amar is re united with Kammo.

I really didnot understand why the film’s title was Lachak, when it should have been ‘The story of kidnapping’.

We will hear a song from Lachak. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist.

Song-Tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage (Lachak)(1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Pt Motiram

Lyrics

tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage
tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage
thhes jab khaayi
to gham ke geet ham gaane lage
thhes jab khaayi
to gham ke geet ham gaane lage
tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage

wo nazar mein thhe
to is duniyaa pe chhaayi thhi bahaar
thhi bahaar
wo nazar mein thhe
to is duniyaa pe chhaayi thhi bahaar
thhi bahaar
unse chhutate hi ee ee
unse chhutate hi
nazaare aag barsaane lage
tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage

o nazar se chhupne waale
dhoondhta hai tujhko dil
tujhko dil
o nazar se chhupne waale
dhoondhta hai tujhko dil
tujhko dil
aa jaa tujh bin
ho o o o
aa jaa tujh bin
hasraton ke phool murjhaane lage
tootate hi dil muhobbat ke maze aane lage

Thanks for the info about Pt. Motiram. I have a slight different version about the music composer of Lachak, the film produced by Bohra Brothers of Jodhpur. It was a miserable flop and the producers lost a lot of family fortune. Trying to find out who Motiram was I bumped into U.K. Purohit who produced Rajasthani film ‘Karma Bai’. He told me Motiram was his mother’s Mama (maternal uncle). Later I met with Purohit’s mother and had a long conversation about Motiram. According to her Motiram was a Pushkarna Brahmin from Jodhpur – a Vyas. Some of the facts narrated by you do not tally with her account regarding Gharana gayak’s son. Shall be grateful if if you could further trace life of the maestro’s. Incidentally I have five songs of unreleased film Inaam with me.
