I am going down memory lane, to my school days. We would come back from school at 3:30 p.m. and at that time Vividh Bharati would be silent till 5:30 p.m. So we would put on the radio and searching for songs, invariably we found All India Radio (Urdu service) where they broadcast the programme “aap ki farmaish” which continued till 5 o’clock.
Soon that became an habit. The reception of the channel was never good or very clear, but we continued to listen to the programme as we were not spoiled for choices. Since evening time was for playing in the compound with friends or if it is exam time, in studying. AIR Urdu service also had a programme called ‘awaaz de kahan hai’. As the title was a Noorjahaan song, its signature tune was the same song. Those days got over too soon, what with college and the arrival of Cable T.V., Radio was soon relegated to a corner to collect dust. Until some year ago ‘Awaaz de kahaan hai” was the only song of Noorjahan, I thought Ii knew. I had heard some other famous songs like ‘Jawan hai mohabbat’ from “Anmol Ghadi” but was not aware that it was sung by Madam Noorjahan.
Since I began sending lyrics to this blog, I stumbled upon a few songs, which are posted, namely “udd jaa panchhi” from ‘Khandan” and “Bulbulon mat ro yehaan” from (Zeenat). I was touched by “bulbulo mat ro yehaan ‘ on first hearing and sensed that I have found a significant song. When I read Atul ji’s write up of the song I learnt that this was the song which
earned the title of ‘Mallika-e-tarannum’ for the singer.
A few days ago I found another song of Noorjahaan’s on youtube. The song is ‘Jhoom jhoom jhoom aye gule-e-naubahaar jhoom” from the film Naukar (1943). The link actually has only audio of this song and images of other songs are used to make up the video. When I heard this song, it was clear that the voice was that of Noorjahan, and it sounded familiar. I was wondering how could it sound familiar or known song, if I am hearing it for the first time. That was when the memory of AIR and ‘Awaaz de kahaan hai” surfaced. These songs must have played on that programme. These were very old songs and with bad reception they never really registered. And I was not into really old songs at that time too. I preferred popular songs and newer songs than.
With the morphed video, I thought it better I should investigate this song. So I searched all over and found that there was indeed a film called ‘Naukar’ in 1943. The film is not represented yet on the blog. The youtube link is giving the composer’s name as Rafiq Ghaznavi and lyricist is Nazim Panipati. This is a female duet song sung by Noorjahaan and Raj Kumari, again as per the comment on youtube. I have no way of finding out if the information is accurate. Earthmusic.net is having this song from film “Naukar’ but no other information is given, not even Noorjahan’s name. On careful listening, it becomes clear that there are two different singers, one is singing happily and other part is melancholy. It is likely the same Raj Kumari Dubey who sang nazariya ki maari mari mori guiyaan, a superb folk song. Believe it or not ‘Pakeeza’ is a 70’s movie, and this song is from the 40’s. Though I am able to recognize Noorjahaan’s portions in this song, but to compare the two voices of ‘Najariyaa ki maari ” and Raj Kumari of this song, is very difficult.
The song is very infectious and giving really happy vibes as far as I can make out. Audio is not very clear, but words are more or less clear.

Also, to Nahm ji’s query, has Noorjehaan given playback to other actresses?

As per Geet Kosh, Noorjehaan is in the list of actors for this film. So it is possible she is singing for herself. She had already started to appear in films as a lead actress – ‘Khaandaan’ (1942).
I have one observation about the video clip of this song. My feeling is it is not genuine video of the said song, but it is a very carefully prepared video, crafted from other video clippings of Noorjehaan. If this were a genuine video,we should have seen two actresses lip syncing – one Noorjehaan herself, and another lady lip syncing for Rajkumari. There are many such ‘crafted’ videos floating on YouTube, and my hunch is that this too is one such item.

I am surprised how and why HFGK failed to mention Noorjahan’s name in the starcast of NAUKAR-1943.
My information is that she DID act in this film.The film was a grand flop and after this film Director Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and Noorjahan got married.
As far as my knowledge goes,Noorjahan did not give playback in India.She started Playback only in Pakistan,that too when she stopped acting in films.

Thanks a lot for the detailed plot Sir. I think Noor Jehan Ji might have played some second lead or something. I wonder how you missed her? She was definitely among the important characters of the story 🙂 She has 4 songs (a nobody can’t sing so much in a film, no?) Please think and tell us who she was in the film, if you remember. In some interview, Rajkumari Ji had excitedly mentioned that she was a fan of Noor Jehan Ji, and sang with her in this film. Great fans of Noor Jehan Ji have discovered which 4 songs she sang, but those other 2 songs are yet to be found. It is not known whether those were recorded.
I would also like to mention, in fact, Noor Jehan Ji did give playback in India! And the surprise is, all of those songs were in her own films 🙂 In Khandan (1942), she sang the trio ‘Hamein Maar Gayi Re’ with Shamshad Begum Ji and Umraozia Begum Ji (wife of Ghulam Haider Ji), which was picturised on a group of girls in a rotation. Even though Noor Jehan Ji’s part was mainly sung for her, a couple of lines were given like playback for others too by chance (eg. ‘choot sake na hoye’). After that, she sang ‘Ab Kaun Hai Mera’ as playback for Maya Banerjee Ji in Dost (1944), which is her first purposefully playback song. Then she sang the blockbuster Qawwali ‘Aahein Na Bhareen’ with Zohrabai Ji and Kalyanibai Ji, for a group of girls. She was playing the heroine, as Iam sure you would know, and was not in the song. Hence it was genuinely playback, for some actresses like Shashikala Ji, Shyama Ji, Rehana Ji, etc. on whom her parts were picturised on.

I missed adding this comment earlier. Like yourself, I too have been an avid listener of this afternoon program on AIR Urdu Service. Same here, after returning from school, and having lunch, the choice activity was to listen to this program, much to the annoyance of my mother who would want us to get a nap before evening set in.
This program was broadcast from the Jalandhar station of AIR, and it was meant more for the fans of Hindi films and the audience in Pakistan. The transmissions were beamed towards Pakistan, and yes, the reception on this side was not very good, unless we tuned in to short wave. I do not know if this program is still broadcast, have not heard it for a very long time.
Yes, thanks for this revival of fond memories of childhood. 🙂

I dont know about Jallandhar station, but AIR Urdu service was broadcast from Delhi on medium wave. “Aap ki farmaish” was a daily programme and ‘Awaaz de kahaan hai ‘ must have been a weekly programme, I am not even sure about the time of broadcast.

I suggest the following corrections to the lyrics. These corrections are based on inputs from Sh. Harmandir Singh ji.
The line
“mera unn ka bhi saathh(?) hai”
should read
“mera khudaa bhi shaad hai”
The line
“josh-e-shabaab par hayaa”
should read
“josh-e-shabaab par hai aaj”
The line
“aa kar mujh hi ko pyaar”
should read
“aa karoon tujhko pyaar”
The line
“hasratein ? ? mit gayeen”
should read
“hasrat e zaar mit gayee”
The line
“ghul(?) gayaa meraa pyaar”
should read
“chhinn gayaa mera pyaar”
Harmandir ji also reminds me about the important feature of this song. This is one of those songs, that have a two types of feelings woven together, being sung by two different singers, and also performed by two different characters on screen. Readers may recall the famous Talat-Rafi duet from ‘Sushila’ (1966) – “Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein” (https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2010/06/22/gham-ki-andheri-raat-mein/).
As per the information provided by Harmandir ji, this song is performed on screen by Noorjehaan (singing for herself) and Shobhna Samarth (lip syncing for Rajkumari).

I suggest we can have a category of songs which have the sad and happy feelings both woven together. I can recall a couple of more such examples. The song from ‘Kaala Paani’ (1958) – “Jab Naam e Mohabbat Leke Kisi” (https://atulsongaday.me/2012/05/08/jab-naam-e-muhabbat-leke-kisi-aji-chhodo-ye-taraana-hai-puraana/). Thanks for posting a song from NAUKAR-1943,a film I remember even today for being one of the most tragic films full of sad events throughout.
Naukar – 1943, was a Sunrise Pictures,Bombay, presentation.it was directed by Syed Shaukat hussain Rizvi(who later married Noorjahan).
The music was by Rafiq Gaznavi and Shanti kumar.There were 9 songs in the films,but as per HFGK,there is no information as to who composed which song.Further it seems there was only 1 record from this film,featuring Noorjahan songs on both sides.The above song is sung by Noorjahan and Rajkumari.
The cast was Shobhana Samarth,Balwant Singh,Chandramohan,Mirza musharraf,Yaqub,Miss Moti, etc.
The film was based on the story by an Urdu Novelist of those times
Manot.
The film opens with an old looking Fazlu(Chandramohan),in jail,remembering his past.
Fazlu is a life servant of Khwaja Islamuddin(khwaja sabir).Once while crossing a railway line,with the infant son,Salim,of the Khwaja,the child is killed.Fazlu is arrested and sent to jail.
After few years Fazlu escapes from prison,comes home to find that his wife has given birth to a son,called Salim.He thinks that the child is newly born child of the master.
He shifts to the city,along with Salim (Balwant singh) who gets friendly with Nargis (Shobhana Samarth).His friends are Mirza (Mirza Musharraf) and Sadiq (Yaqub).Day by day Fazlu’s financial condition becomes very bad.
One day there is a knock on the door.When he opens the door,he finds Nargis with many wounds.he does not know what the matter is.Nargis dies in his arms. In the meantime Mirza arrives with a knife in hand,followed by police,who arrest him.
He tries to contact Sadiq,but when he reaches his home,he finds Sadiq hanging .He had committed suicide.
There is no trace of Salim.In the police investigation it is revealed that Fazloo is an escaped convict. He is arrested and sent to Jail.
Till today,I have not understood what the film wanted to tell.I tried to get
Manot’s stories,but could not get them.probably he wrote only for films.
