Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

The she I love

Posted on: January 24, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Welcome all to the 7400th offering on this blog, which in my opinion should now be renamed as Atul-Six-Songs-a-Day (or maybe Atul-Six-Pack 🙂 :).)

The last century milestone bade a goodbye to 2012, which turned out to be a marvelous year, as far as the accomplishments of this blog and its contributors are concerned. And then, moving on, we are now at the next century milestone, yet once again. A mite longer than regular, this century took twenty four days to arrive, far above the normal rate of one century every sixteen or eighteen days. In the interim, there were some days of travel that took time out of Atul ji’s schedule. But no matter, the interest and participation in the blog continues unabated, with unflagging enthusiasm. And that, dear friends, is the most heartening feature of this blog.

The popularity is spreading. And I know this from first hand experiences. I am a member of a very active mailing group, all ex employees of the same company from many years ago. This is a general group, with no specific thread on music. About ten days ago, I found a message in email, coming from one of the other members of this group. Apparently, he had stumbled upon Atul-Song-a-Day, and he wrote a very eagerly enthusiastic message for the group, telling about this blog, and the volume of songs that are posted, and the value in terms of details, information and lyrics. And that songs can be searched by year, by film and by music director. And I quote from his message, “. . . its a million dollar gift to any old Hindi song lover”. Ah, I wish the million dollar bit could be exercised, 😀 :D. Regardless, this message confirmed for me that this blog is touching people in various ways, in different places.

And then, on reading this positive and excited message, another thought occurred to me. In this world that full of problems and stresses, and so many other types of negativities, our blog is contributing in raising what I would term as “Happiness Quotient” of this world. That in diverse corners of this world, there are people in love with Hindi films and film music, searching for memories, searching for sounds that satisfy. Going on the internet they stumble on to this blog, and they find exactly the things they are searching for, and many more besides. That moment of discovery, that moment of fulfillment, that moment of ‘wow’ is such a wonderful feeling, the moment in which a rejoicing heart will utter – “Ah, this makes my day”. I know all friends on this blog will agree. I have, and I know that all friends also have, experienced such moments, on this blog itself.

Maybe Atul ji may add this to the banner of this blog – “Adding to the Happiness Quotient of the World – One Song at a Time”. 🙂 :).

So, arriving at the 7400th stop, and then looking forward into the landscape that continues to stretch all the way to the horizon, gives me a lot of joy that this journey is set to continue for a lifetime – there is so much to be rediscovered and discussed. At the last century milestone, I had got one very delightful thought. However at the last milestone, we were celebrating three milestones already, so I did not want this thought to get lost in between many others. You will remember, on 31st December, one of the songs that was posted was “Baajewaala Patialewaala” from the film ‘Basant’ (1960). I was writing up a different song for one of the other posts that day, and I got a request from Atul ji to do this song instead. As I was reading Atul ji’s message, a fun thought flashed through my mind, and I just could not stop laughing. “Baajewaala, Patialewaala” – aur Atul ji phir kya huye? “Gaanewaala, Ranchiwaala”. So that might well be the ‘takhallus’ or the signature that we can apply to him. 😀 😀 :D. Atul ji, Gaanewaala, Ranchiwaala. Maybe someone can even do the complete lyrics on this. 😀 :D.

And now, coming to the other important milestone that we celebrate with this post today. This is the 1800th song of Rafi Sb on this blog. And for this post, I present this one delightful and rollicking English non film song by him. In a discussion in the comments area a few days back, there happened a discussion on Rafi Sb’s songs. And Nahm ji mentioned in one of her comments, about this very entertaining song, albeit in English. Now the thought in my mind was that besides being in English, this song is also a non-film song. Then I checked with Atul ji if this may qualify for adding to this blog. And he whole heartedly agreed, and so here we are presenting this as the major milestone for Rafi Sb’s songs.

The lyrics of this song are written by Harindranath Chattopadhyay. Ah yes, we are very familiar now with his writings, for we have the songs he wrote for the film ‘Aashirwaad’ (1968) already posted on this blog. He is well known as an author of children’s stories, songs and poems. And so when I explored, I am pleasantly amazed to find that he is the poet behind this song. And there is this added icing to the cake – Harindranath ji himself joins Rafi Sb in rendering this song. He joins in for a couple of lines in the beginning and the end of the song, and contributes a whole lot of laughter and chuckles along the way.

The music is by Shankar Jaikishan. And as soon as you will hear the song, I am very sure you will recognize the film song on which this melody is based. I will not reveal it here, but I am sure someone in the group is going to identify it in the comments, almost immediately. This song was released in the 1960s as a 78 rpm record. And yes, the song on the other side of this record is also an English non film song by the same team. That song, “Remember Friends, The World Is One”, is a more somber, philosophical song of bringing togetherness. I am sure we should see it posted here in the near future on an appropriate occasion.

The song itself is a very zestful, a very cheerful and a very jolly proclamation by one young heart for his lady love. The melody and the pace of music, and the hearty rendering by Rafi Sb, so full of conviction, makes this a song to fall in love with. And the punch line is the one that Harindranath ji recites at the beginning and at the end of the song.

It is a lover’s duty
To fall in love with beauty

I am just so taken in with the choice of the word “DUTY” 😀 :D. So friends, if you fancy yourself as a lover (ah yes, we all lovers of music are always young at heart, and always in love :)), then as this song proclaims, you do not have any option, it is your duty. 😀 😀

I am just so sure that you will want to sing this song to someone special today. Or the other way round, have someone special sing it for you. 😀 :D.

Enjoy.

(Side note: I have been doing lyrics in Devnagari script for some days now, and it is not a difficult task, as I have been doing some work with Hindi displays earlier also. For the fun of it, I thought I would also include the lyrics of this song also in Devnagari. And it turned out to be a different challenge altogether. The Devnagari script is tuned to the Hindi words, but as soon as one tries to type English words with it, it becomes very complicated. And one has to resort to many tricks to get the right combination to appear. But it was fun. 🙂 )

Song-The she I love (Rafi NFS)(1967) Singer-Rafi, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Lyrics-Harindranath Chattopadhyay, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

ha ha ha ha ha ha
it is a lover’s duty
to fall in love with beauty

the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
I love her love her love her love her
so will you
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
I love her love her love her love her
so will you
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true

because she thinks it pleases me
like a cat’s a rat she seizes me
she tickles me she teases me
she warms me up she freezes me
ha ah ha ha ha
because she thinks it pleases me
like a cat’s a rat she seizes me
she tickles me she teases me
she warms me up she freezes me
I love her love her love her love her
what shall I do
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
yeee aaah
ha ha ha ha ha ha

ho she is a flower lovely and rare
her beautiful body seems to bear
the magical mood of morning air
and black as night is her raven hair
ho she is a flower lovely and rare
her beautiful body seems to bear
the magical mood of morning air
and black as night is her raven hair
I love her love her love her love
my love is true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
I love her love her love her love her
so will you
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true
the she I love is a beautiful beautiful dream come true

ha ha ha ha
I love you
I told you
it is a lover’s duty
to fall in love with beauty

It was a pleasure to here this song, undoubtedly the lyricist is an authority in English, brother of Sarojini Naidu and son of Agornath Chatopadhyaya the first DSc in the country and founder Principal of the 127 year old Nizam College, Hyderabad.

It is a matchless rendering by the one and only Rafisab, justifying the poetry keeping the rhythm of the SJ composition . Many thanks to the post.

Sir,

Thanks a lot for covering this song. And it is really great to see 1800 songs of Rafi sahab in the blog. This song has its appeal in the fact that it is unsophisticated and unpretentious. Harindranath Chattopadhyay’s poetry’s childlike innocence is also heard in Rafi Sahab’s voice.

Thanks & Regards.

Khyati ji
😀 😀
I assure you that I had as much fun writing this post, as you have reading it.
And yes, I am almost expecting you to the take up the offer for the lyrics for ‘Gaanewaala, Ranchiwaala’. 😀

Nahm ji,
Yes, Rafi Sb had this wonderful gift of catching the exact emotion intended to be conveyed by the words of the song, and then expressed that emotion precisely as he sang the words. No wonder that he could blend so effortlessly into the character and the situation. Only a pure soul can achieve this.
And yes, thanks again for the reminder to get this song here. 🙂

Paresh ji,
The song you mentions is ‘Although We Hail From Different Lands’, and it is the same as the song I referred in the post – “Remember Friends, The World Is One”.
And thanks for the reminder of the song from ‘Sangam’. It is based on a famous German song ‘Ich Liebe Dich’ meaning ‘I Love You’. I assure you this song will also get posted here shortly. 🙂

Sunil ji,
Welcome to the group. I also read your message from yesterday for the song ‘Mujhe Yaad Aati Hai’. We respect your friendliness and honor.
There are a few songs by Jagjit Singh ji already posted on this blog. If you know the film, you can search for them on the page ‘List of Songs – Moviewise’ (link near the top of this page).

Arun ji, Nitin ji, Prakash ji, Avinash ji, Prof Murthy ji,
Thanks so much for your comments and appreciation.

And yes, Mahesh ji,
Thanks for the quickest response in identifying the film song.

Great to be on this blog, great to be amongst so many friends,

With regards to all

Sudhirji gave me a offer of writing this “wala” poem on Atulji aur main to soch hi nahin paa rahi thi ki kya likhoon, kyunki Avinashji ka “wala” chhodkar, kuchh nahin aata hai mujhe. 😆

Sudhirji,
Dekho, ek bhai challenge karta hai to doosra masihaa bankar bahen ko madad karta hai. 🙂
