C Ramchandra started his career as an independent Music Director with a Tamil film- ” Jayakodi” ( Flag of Victory ).

Very strange indeed ! A Marathi composer, who spent his entire life in Hindi cinema Industry, started with a Tamil film !!

But then, life is a strange phenomenon. Not without reason it is said that Truth is stranger than Fiction. Luckily for C Ramchandra, the film was made in Bombay itself and he did not have to go to Madras. Later in his life he gave music to another Tamil film, ” Van Mohini “, which was ofcourse made in Madras.

This incident reminds me of Music Director Ravi. After his career in Hindi films took a nosedive, he went to extreme south-Kerala and gave music to some Malyalam films. And mind you, neither he nor C Ramchandra understood a single word of those languages- Malyalam and Tamil ! Hindi film industry’s wellknown Music Director became a wellknown and famous Music Director of Malyalam films, winning few Awards too.

Ravi was known and credited as ” Bombay Ravi ” for Malyalam films. Except this similarity, however, there was nothing common in Ravi or C Ramchandra’s careers as music directors.

Ravi started his career with Vachan-1955, by which time C Ramchandra was already at the zenith of his career. After 1958, C Ramchandra started going downhill and Ravi became upwardly mobile. C Ramchnadra ended with Toofani Takkar in 1978 and Ravi continued till Aurat aur parinda-1991.

As is wellknown, C Ramchandra’s name got fame with Shehnai-47, which was actually his 26th film as a Music Director. From 1949 -Girls school, his association with Lata became firm till 1958, when Lata stopped singing for him, for whatever reasons. Barring a few films like Stree-61, Bahurani-62, Veer Bheemsen-64,and Payal ki Jhankaar-68, Lata did not sing for him anymore, though C Ramchnadra continued to consider Lata as his inspiration for song composition.

When the two were in Top gear, producers used to be confident about their film’s music. So much so that the producers of NamoonaNiraala -1949 gave advertisements and also printed on film tickets that if at all, any spectator wishes to leave the film in the interval, without seeing the song,” Mehfil mein jal uthi shama”, the entire refund will be given to him ! People not only remained glued to their seats but also repeatedly saw the film for songs. Such was the magic of C Ramchandra-Lata music in those days !

After a gap of 3 years Lata sang for C Ramchandra in Stree-61. When Shantaram announced the launch of Stree in papers, Lata was keen to sing for it. She conveyed her desire to Shantaram. Earlier Shantaram’s Navrang had been made successful by C Ramchnadra’s music without Lata. May be that is why Lata wanted to sing in this film. She knew C Ramchandra was the Music Director. When Shantaram asked CR about Lata, I am sure he must have been happy in his heart, but he coolly said, that he has no objection. He however put a condition that Lata should sing same number of songs in C Ramchandra’s other forthcoming films, if asked to which Lata agreed with a condition that there wont be any C Ramchnadra-Lata duets. This way,Lata sang sporadically in a few moreC Ramchandra films-but without her heart being in them.

C Ramchandra has described how he first met master Bhagwan.

Meersaheb was a very knowledgeable person and C Ramchnadra learnt many things from him. Having worked under different composers helped him a lot. As such he was pushing his tunes in his Master’s compositions anyway. This gave him confidence that he can give music independently.

Meersaheb was composing music for some films other than Minerva. There was a stunt film,” Bahadur Kissan”,directed by a Maharashtrian Master Bhagwan Palav. He was also the hero and sang his own songs. The location shooting of this film was in progress and Bhagwan was singing. C Ramchandra was playing the Harmonium. Meersaheb was giving instructions to Bhagwan from time to time, but he was making mistakes and hot tempered Meersaheb was getting more and more angry.

Finally Bhagwan came to C Ramchnadra and asked him why he can not take his practice. C Ramchnadra told meersaheb that because Bhagwan was scared of Meersaheb, he was unable to sing properly. Meersaheb understood. He asked C Ramchnadra to do the further work and left. After that C Ramchandra conducted the scene and the shot and the song came out very well. This was the begining of a long lasting friendship between the duofor many years to come.

One day Bhagwan told C Ramchandra that he has got a Tamil film for direction and it was to be made in Bombay. He asked C Ramchandra if he was ready to do its music. This was a God sent opportunity and C Ramchandra grabbed it with both hands. The film name was JAYAKODI( Victory Flag).

Meanwhile C Ramchnadra was thrown out of Minerva for an affair. He had started an affair with a newly joined Heroine in Minerva. Unfortunately the Boss of Minerva( Mody ? ) was also involved with her. When the boss learnt about C Ramchnadra’s extra-curricular activities he threw him out physically.

But now he had a film on hand. Here too C Ramchandra started an affair with the heroine. They did not understand each other’s language but whatever was necessary was understood by both. This went on till the film got completed. Then she left for Madras and sent letters from there in Tamil. He used to reply in English. Finally he went to Madras, but by that time she had joined hands with her Boss and once again C Ramchnadra was thrown out-this time out of the state.

C Ramchnadra came back and went to Poona as an assistant to Sadashivrao Nevrekar, a wellknown Marathi composer, for Sarswati Cinetone.

When he came back, one day Bhagwan came to him and said ,” Anna,ek film mila hai apun ko ”

” very good.” C Ramchnadra said.

” lekin mai bola producer ku ki Anna ko hi Music dena padega. Woh maan gaya hai”- Bhagwan

C Ramchandra was too happy.

This was his FIRST Hindi film as a Music Director, ” Sukhi Jeevan”-1942. He thanked Bhagwan profusely…………

Today’s our song is from film SAGAI-1951. Sagaai was a comedy film. In this film C Ramchandra’s assistant was Chic Chocolate. Sagaai was a Comedy picture featuring the ever popular jodi of Yakub and Gope. In his later career, Yakub played Villain roles, but in the first half he was paired with Gope as a comic pair a la Bob Hope-Bing Crosby pair style.

This film had 9 songs sung by Rafi, Lata, Amirbai, Talat, Chitalkar and Shamshad. Most songs had comic tones.

Today’s song is sung by the trio Lata, Rafi and C Ramchandra. The Lyricist is Rajendra Krishna.

The synopsis of Sagai film was posted on 7-1-2012. Here it is again.

SAGAI-1951 was a musical comedy which had the all time haunting duet of Lata-Talat-Mohabbat mein aise zamane bhi aaye, kabhi ro diye hum.

A film by Varma films, it was directed by H.S.Rawail. Music was by C.Ramchandra whose asistant for this film was Chick Chocolate-an independent composer in later years. The songs were excellent and became very popular in those days.

The cast was Premnath, Rehana, Poornima, Vijaylaxmi, Gope, Yakub, Iftikhar, Cuckoo, Sunder, Mohana etc.

When Chandani(Rehana) returns from London, she refuses to marry Lala Jugal Kishor’s son, to whom her engagement was done by her father(Iftikhar), in her childhood. When forced to marry, she runs away from the house and somehow joins a team of petty thieves Fooman (Gope) and Dhabu(Yakub). To avoid police, they board a ship, owned by Shahzadi(Poornima) and head for her kingdom Jagira. Chandni, to hide her identity, dons a boy’s dress and becomes Chand. They get employement on the ship.

The captain of the ship, Prem, is handsome. Both Shahzadi and Chandni fall in his love. Shahzadi expresses her love, but Chand(Chandani) can not do so. When Shahzadi gives a ring to Prem and he shows it to him/her, she throws it in the sea, reveals herself and expresses her love. Prem also falls in her love.

When the ship reaches Jagira, Prem refuses to marry Shahzadi. Her brother, the King(Hiralal) arrests him and proposes to Chandani for marriage. With help of Fooman and Dhabu, Chandani rescues Prem, and they sail away in the night.

When they reach home, Chandani’s father is surprised to see Prem, as he is the same with whom Chandani’s SAGAAI had taken place in her childhood.

All are happy !

Correction-
Please read NIRALA-1950,instead of Namoona-1949 for song- Mehfil mein jal uthi shama.
Regret the slip.
