Jaana na dil se door

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

During 1948-50, Dilip Kumar-Kamini Kaushal was a much talked about lead pair having worked in ‘Shaheed’ (1948), ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ (1949), ‘Shabnam’ (1949) and ‘Aarzoo’ (1950). All these films were successful at the box office. Then why is it so that this successful lead pair did not work together in any films after ‘Arzoo’ (1950)? There is a story behind it but before that let me share Kamini Kaushal’s profile in brief which I found unusual and interesting. Some highlights of her profile including the reason for not working with Dilip Kumar after ‘Arzoo’ (1950) are given below:

Kamini Kaushal (16/01/1927, now completed 86 years of age) was born in Lahore as Uma Kashyap. She did her schooling and completed her B.A. (English literature) in Lahore. Her elder sister died early leaving behind her very young children and the husband. In keeping with the practice in those days, the young Uma got married to her sister’s husband who was working as an senior officer with Bombay Port Trust. Thus she became Uma Sood and shifted to his sprawling official bungalow in south Bombay (Mumbai). Before her marriage, she acted in her first film ‘Neecha Nagar’ (1946) directed by Chetan Anand. She was given a new name as Kamini Kaushal. The film was released after her marriage.

In Bombay, she started getting offers to act in the films and she accepted a few of them with the consent of her husband. Having worked with Dilip Kumar in two films in 1948, both of them shared a close relationship. It was during the making of ‘Pagree’ (1948) that Dilip Kumar used to visit the set quite often. During one of the shooting schedules of ‘Pagree’, her brother, an army man, came on the set and threatened her with a pistol to shoot her if she did not stop her clandestine affair with Dilip Kumar. It was later decided that she would complete the films on hand and there would be no more new films for her (with Dilip Kumar). [ Source: The Tribune ].

Perhaps, more than the threat of her brother, both of them may have thought on the lines of what Sahir Ludhianvi wrote 15 years after this incidence in an iconic song in ‘Gumraah’ (1963):

wo afsaanaa jise anjaam tak laanaa naa ho mumkin
use ik khooboorat mod dekar chhodnaa achchhaa

Incidentally, B R Chopra’s film ‘Gumraah’ (1963) seems to have been inspired from the so called clandestine affair of Dilip Kumar-Kamini Kaushal.

Kamini Kaushal continued to work as a lead actress in the films until 1962. From 1965 onwards, she switched over to playing character roles in films beginning with ‘Shaheed’ (1965) in which she played the role of Manoj Kumar’s mother. Her last film as per her filmography was ‘Laaga Chunri Mein Daag’ (2007). In between she also worked in a couple of T V serials.

I have chosen a song ‘aankhon se door jaake’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the film AARZOO (1950) which was the last film in which Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal worked as a lead pair. The other star cast included Shashikala, Gope, Cuckoo, Neelam, Satyen Bose, Seeta Bose etc. The film was produced by Hiten Choudhary and directed by Shaheed Lateef. The film had 11 songs of which 7 songs including the one under discussion were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and remaining 2 each were written by Prem Dhawan and Jan Nisar Akhtar. Five songs from this film have been discussed in this blog.

The song is picturised on a young Kamini Kaushal. The highlight of this song is that during Lata’s singing, only the dholak beats are prominent and rest of the orchestra is on a very low key. The tune appears to be based on Rabindra Sangeet.

It is a lovely song in Lata Mangeshkar’s early pristine voice.

Song-Jaana na dil se door (Aarzoo)(1950) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

jaanaa na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake
jaana na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake
naazook bahut hai dekho
naazook bahut hai dekho
dil ho na gham se choor
aankhon se door jaake
jaana na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake

furqat ke ranj sahana
aur munh se kuchh na kahana
furqat ke ranj sahanaa
aur munh se kuchh na kahana
bichhade hain aaj ham tum
bichhade hain aaj ham tum
milna hai phir zaroor
aankhon se door jaake
jaana na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake

ulfat ko tum nibhaana
mujh se na rooth jaana
mujh se na rooth jaana
ulfat ko tum nibhaana
mujh se na rooth jaana
mujh se na rooth jaana
zaalim hai ye zamaana
zaalim hai ye zamaana
dil to hai beqasoor
aankkhon se door jaake
jaana na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake
jaana na dil se door
aankhon se door jaake
