Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Bhala thha kitna apna bachpan

Posted on: May 6, 2013

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I must really thank ATUL JI for providing us all,a platform to share our information/knowledge and enjoy the best of Hindi Film and Non Film music.
But for him, it would not have been possible.

If one devotes time for such activity after one’s retirement then it is understandable, but balancing job and family responsibility with such type of time consuming devotion to an enterprise is really praiseworthy. Not many people can do it, I bet.

On behalf of everyone of us, I thank Atul ji for all that he has been doing and assure him that we will continue to be with him in this team to make this Blog- Nay to maintain this Blog as an Unique example to the World.

Whenever I have to write about an actor, director, a film or a song, I always felt that with the expansion of Internet and access to Information, most of the things about famous people are easily procurable or available to read. If one has to to do a ‘Cut & Paste’ or ‘Copy & Write’ job, what’s so great about it,then ?

The Blog must not be a storehouse of what is already known to most people. Biographies or Filmographies of singers and actors are available almost everywhere. Of course,if needed, they must be mentioned, but what I would want is that this Blog must provide information which is exclusive, different, new, unheard of ,unread and not easily available anywhere. Some anecdotes, controversies, incidents in life, turning points, interviews, quotes and such authentic and well supported information enhances the prestige of the Blog and also the readablity of the artcle.

In this respect,I think we have already earned this reputation. One of my friends from California wrote to me,” I visit Atul’s Blog daily, not to confirm what I knew already, but to add to my knowledge.”

This comment made me very happy. Recently, Atul ji has said, in reply to someone’s comments, that ‘ the comment section of the Blog actually adds further information to the song’s details.

From the various comments of readers from different countries, it is obvious that the addition of NFS to the Blog has given nostalgic pleasure to many people. Just like the melodious, rare to find and difficult to get Hindi film songs, even the famous NFS by well known artistes evokes nostalgia, pleasure and happiness.

Today we are about to enjoy one such famous and very very melodious NFS by Hemant Kumar- ” Bhala tha kitna apna Bachpan “, which was recorded somewhere in early 40s, when Hemant Kumar started recording Bangla and Hindi Geets, prior to his involvement in film music.

Poet Lyricist Faiyaz Hashmi and composer Kamal Dasgupta were regularly churning out wonderful melodies on 78 RPM every month and listeners all over India were enjoying them fully.

Actually,in 1985,Jagmohan Sursagar wrote in his Autobiography…..

” In the initial stages Kamal Dasgupta was inflenced by Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore’s songs and compositions(Rabindra sangeet) were extremely popular, but were limited to Bangla people only. Ghazal, qawwali, Dadra, Naat, Thumri, Hori, Kajari etc used to come to market but had a very limited listenership. These never reached the top.

” The fusion of Gazal,Dadra and Qawali with Bangla Geet style gave birth to Hindi Hindi Non Film Songs or geets. As such Geet had a known and accepted place in Literature, but not in Music. To establish this new Genre, Kamal babu used lyrics by Pt.Madhur, Pt. Anjum and Faiyaz Hashmi, got them sung by Jagmohan, Hemant, Talat, Juthika etc. Their records were inscribed with ‘ Hindi Geet (Hindustani Song) ‘. What thus started as NFS Geet from 1936 continued upto next 20 years non stop. “

So,this is the story of Birth of Hindi NFS for the FIRST time on this Blog !!!

Let us now enjoy the much awaited and one of the oldest Hindi NFS by Hemant Kumar. It is written by Faiyyaz Hashmi. Music is composed by Kamal Dasgupta.

Song-Bhala thha kitna apna bachpan (Hemant Kumar NFS)(1941) Singer-Hemant Kumar, Lyrics-Faiyyaz Hashmi, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics

bhala thha kitna apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna
bhala thha kitna apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna

din bhar tu pedon ke taley
rehti thi pasaaree aanchal
din bhar tu pedon ke taley
rehti thi pasaaree aanchal
aur main daalon se
phenka karta thha tod ke phal
aur main daalon se
phenka karta thha tod ke phal
maali thha bas hamaara dushman
apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna
bhala thha kitna apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna

yaad bhi hai wo khel ki baat
jab ham nikaalte thhe baaraat
yaad bhi hai wo khel ki baat
jab ham nikaalte thhe baaraat
ladke mujhko dulha banaate
sakhiyaan tujhko banaat dulhan
apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna
bhala thha kitna apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna

din ko khel mein aur raaton ko
baaton mein kho jaate thhe
raja rani ke kisse
sunte sunte so jaate thhe
din ko khel mein aur raaton ko
baaton mein kho jaate thhe
raja rani ke kisse
sunte sunte so jaate thhe
aankh mein neend ka naam nahin thha
aankh mein neend ka naam nahin thha
dil se koson door thhi dhadkan
apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna
bhala thha kitna apna bachpan
bhala thha kitna

Atulji & Arunji,
Thank you for this rare treat. You may not believe, but I was listening to two NFS songs of HK yesterday only and was thinking of someone posting one of those two on the blog. And here it is!!!!! The second song is Main saaz bajaoon tum gaao, tum gaao…… by the same lyricist, Faiyyaz Hashmi. Bachpan mein radio pe suna thha, but never cherished it back then. Now can feel the soothing effect of the word, voice and music. 🙂 Thank you again.

Thank you Arunji for bringing back my childhood memories.

How much ever we thank Atulji, it is insufficient. All old Hindi song lovers (rather Hindi melodious song lovers) should be grateful to him and we all are. And grateful to also the various contributors who enrich it by their knowledge and beautiful writings.

This NFS is very sweet and simple, bachpan ki yaad aa gayi. Remembering the days when our uncle used to tell us bedtime stories. Kahaa gaye woh din??

Why? Because it brings back the memories, glad and sad, that we always cherish. Many have great coincidences, that stay with our lives, FOR EVER!

Even after seven-plus decades, this song is still fresh! I wonder whether children of today will anything in this song with which they can connect.

Seshadri ji,
No chance ! How can today’s children connect with anything that is not existing today ?

Na ped na Paudhe,Na Guda Guddi ka Khel
na Raja Rani ki kahani Na isme koi mel.

yeh sab baten purani,na inka koi Mol
VDO game kitne achhe, yehi hai sabke Bol.

Tum apni yaaden rakho apne paas
humko nahi isme interest koi khas

Aaj ki karo baaten, purane khayal bhoolo
Khao,piyo,maze karo,khushiyon mein tum jhoolo.

The above lines explain today’s philosophy !

Brilliantly put into verse. As the manifestation of the philosophy of “todays” generation, the lines above cannot be surpassed.
