Hamko India bahut pasand

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is an unusual song with different lyrics, from an obscure and less heard film, MATLABI DUNIYA-1961. I have not seen this film, nor could I get any information about this film anywhere, except what is available in HFGK.

I came to know about this song FIRST time when my friend from Surat Mr.Harish Raghuvanshi ji sent me this song on mp3. Harish ji, as we know is a Film and song Historian and writer of many books.

After hearing this song, it haunted me so much that I kept on listening to it again and again. The Lyrics of the song are different, it says, ‘Hum ko India bahot pasand, yahaan hamara favourite singer, beautiful singer, Handsome singer Mukesh Chand…’

I decided to put it on this Blog and searched for it on You Tube. Luckily it was available.

Matlabi Duniya-61 was a Chetana production film, Bombay. It was a stunt film, directed by a duo-Radhakant and Mahendra Thakur.

Mahendra Thakur had earlier directed one more film Mala-1941, along with Jairaj. ( Mala was remade as AMAR in 1954. For both versions, Naushad was the Music Director. One special point about these 2 films was that JAYANT the actor had done the same role in Amar, which he did in Mala-41).

For the other Director Radhakant Sharma , it was his first film for Direction. May be Mahendra Thakur might have joined him to teach him the art of direction. Anyway, Radhakant directed 32 films mostly in Hindi and some Gujarati too, in his career. His last film was Solah Somvaar-78. He usually directed stunt, Action and C grade films. Some of his films were Rustom e Rome, Tarzan and jadugar, Tarzan and Jalpari, Tarzan 303, Gunahon ke Raste, Shera Daaku etc etc.

The lyrics were by Ramesh Gupta and there were four music Directors for matlabi Duniya-61, in which there were 12 songs sung by 7 singers. The music directors were Sushant Banerjee, Jayanti Joshi, Bharat Mehta and Varma. There is no information about this Verma, but Jayanti Joshi and Bharat Mehta were from Gujarati films, trying their luck-unsuccessfully- in Hindi, as they never again tried any Hindi film.

Sushant Banerjee was a fixture for stunt films and C grade films, like Jungle ki Pukar, Kuldeep, The last Message, Diwanji, Monika, Piya, Harishchandra, Ghar Grihasthi etc. Matlabi Duniya was probably his last film.

The cast of the film was Asha, Anant Kumar, Dhumal, Satish Vyas, Damuanna Malvankar etc. The song was sung by Sulochana Chavan (Kadam).

Sulochana Kadam was born in Bombay in 1933. She loved dancing and singing from young age and participated in school programmes. One of the family friends took her to composer Shyambabu Pathak, who was impressed with her style and voice. he gave her two songs in Krishna Sudama-47. She was barely 14 years of age at that time. Her first song was ‘main so rahi thi’. She she also sang in Jungle mein mangal, Kismetwali and Paro in the same year.

1947 was a period when many female singers had migrated to pakistan and there was enough space available for singers. From 1948, she got some fame after Dukhiyari, Laal Dupatta, Naav, Sunehre Din, Bombay etc.

She reached her zenith when she sang for Dholak and Ba-1951. ‘Chori chori aag si dil mein’ and ‘mausam aaya hai rangeen’ with Satish Batra were exceedingly popular.

Due to her typical voice and style, she was seen as different from Lata, Asha, Geeta, Raajkumari or Zohrabai. She sang maximum songs from 1950 to 55 period. Some of her films were, Hanste rehna, Basera, Bade bhaiya, Damaad, Jeevan tara, Mamta, Malika Salomi,Fashion etc etc.

She got married in 1953 to Shyamrao Chavan and slowly she opted out of the race. Her last song was with Meena Kapoor,in Akash pari-1958.

Sulochana Chavan was extremely popular in Marathi, singing lavani songs. She actually set up a bench mark for Lavani singing in Marathi, for ever.

She got several awards, including the sangeet and Natak Akademi.

Sulochana Chavan(Kadam) sang abour 220 songs in 60 films-Marathi and Hindi.

Today’s song is sung by sulochana Chavan, with Chorus. Let us enjoy the song….
