Libaas (1988) didn’t get an official release though it was shown at some international film festivals. When asked about the film’s fate some ten years back, Gulzar played the ball into the producer’s court and feigned disinterest. Most probably it will never get released. All that we are left with, are the songs and some dialogues from the movie.
Today I bring you the lyrics of a song from this movie, which is historic, since this is last duet by Lata and Pancham. It is always nice to say such things of something being first or last. To tell you the truth though I can’t remember many songs sung by them together. In fact the only song, which I can remember where they both feature together is aa mere saathi aa (https://atulsongaday.me/2011/07/03/aa-mere-saathhi-aa/) from Chhalia” (1960), where Pancham gives a background ru ru ru ru to Lata’s rendition of the song.
Song-Kyaa buraa hai kyaa bhalaa (Libaas)(1988)(UR) Singers-R D Burman, Lata, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
muskuraanaa sehte jaanaa
chaahne ki rasm hai
muskuraanaa sehte jaanaa
chaahne ki rasm hai
naa lahu naa koi aansoon
ishq aisaa zakhm hai
muskuraake zakhm khaa le
naa shikaayat koi naa gilaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
aa aa
haan aa aa
saaraa din ghazlen pironaa
raat bhar aawaargi
saaraa din ghazlen pironaa
raat bhar aawaargi
hat gayaa daaman to kyaa hai
saadaa dil hai saadgi
naa dilaasaa
chaahaa dil ne
naa wafaadaari ka silsilaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa
ho sake to jalaa
dil jalaa
kyaa buraa hai
kyaa bhalaa

I have seen this movie in 1991 Bangalore Film festival. This song was picturised on Naseeruddin Shah(a Middle class budding stage Play director) and Shabana Azmi(comes from a rich family and in love with Naseeruddin) and Arjun Chakraborthy(acted in Ankush,Zara Si Zindagi)
I dont` remember much about picturisation of this song, but I remember a portion of this song was picturised in an open play auditorium, where Naseeruddin and Shabana were busy with their stage play rehearsal. This song appears at the starting of the movie.

Trust you to bring some old forgotten song out from the archives.
The song has a nice beat. I don’t think ever heard it before.
Thanks for this, Harvey.
