An email request from a faraway land. A lover of music from the golden era, and a dear friend who dearly remembers his departed friends. Trying to trace out and re locate poignant memories and melodies – heard long back and now etched in the memory. Only that there is no information other than the words of the song.
Today morning, Atul ji forwarded me an email from Sikander Esmail Sb, currently residing in the US for past more than three decades. The beautiful and touching message contains a few lines of some songs that he is trying to trace out and locate to hear once again. I reproduce below, some excerpts from his message.
I am here in USA since 33 years now. During these years, I have lost two of my childhood friends. It has been over 15 and 20 years of their departure.
Since all these years, I had been looking for the following songs, which my departed friends used to sing. Unfortunately I don’t know from which films they belong, but just a few words.
All these songs have lovely memories of my beautiful childhood friends. I want to relive those moments again by listening these songs.
PLEASE HELP ME
With this write up, I am posting the first song in Sikander Sb’s list. The song is from the film ‘Sanyaasi’ from 1945. The music is by Naushad Sb, and the wonderfully melancholic words are written by Pt Madhur. The singing voice is that of Zohrabai. The song is a very poignant melody of separation – that whatever may be the sorrows and misfortunes that befall me, but you will never be forsaken from my heart. In the voice of Zohrabai, it is a promise that will most certainly touch your heart, and bring to surface, the emotions and memories – of loved ones who will never leave our hearts and our thoughts.
As I had read the forwarded email, I was certainly touched and moved. But when I traced this song and heard it, it really brought me close to tears.
Sikander Esmail Sb, I am touched by your memories. Just this past Sunday, it was the Day of Friendship, and I can now understand your longing to hear these songs again. I am happy that I am able to help trace these lost gems and bring them up here for your listening satisfaction. Praised be such memories and praised be such friends.

Sudhir ji,
I am genuinely touched by the empathy you and Atul ji have shown to a music lover based in a far off place. A mere expression by him and Lo and Behold….you are there to fulfil his long cherished wish.
I not only appreciate your gesture but also thank you and Atul ji for this commendable act.
I think this is what makes this BLOG and the people attached to it,a different set altogether !
