Raah pe rehte hain yaadon pe basar karte hain

The main male protagonist of the film Namkeen (1982) is the truck driver Gherulal (Sanjeev Kumar), who arrives in the life of an old woman (Waheeda Rehman) and her three daughters, and how his arrival changes their lives. He being a truck driver is always on the move, thus Gulzar’s musafir songs suit his character quite well.
The film ends with this song as you see in the video below. The VCD that I have from T-Series (CDVFF 2462) has a different end altogether. It is a happy end. Most probably it is not a happy ending in the video below, where it looks like that Gherulal goes back to his life as a loner.

Song-Raah pe rehte hain yaadon pe basar karte hain (Namkeen) (1983) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-R D Burman
Chorus
ho o
raah pe rehte hain
yaadon pe basar karte hain
khush raho ahl-e-watan
ho ham to safar karte hain
raah pe rehte hain
yaadon pe basar karte hain
khush raho ahl-e-watan
ho ham to safar karte hain
haan jal gaye jo dhoop mein
to saayaa ho gaye ae
jal gaye jo dhoop mein
to saayaa ho gaye
aasmaan kaa koi konaa
odhaa so gaye
jo guzar jaati hai bas
ho uspe guzar karte hain
raah pe rehte hain
yaadon pe basar karte hain
khush raho ahl-e-watan
ho ham to safar karte hain
ho
uddte pairon ke taley jab
behti hai zameen
uddte pairon ke taley jab
behti hai zameen
muddke hamne koi manzil
dekhi hi nahin
raat din
raahon pe ham
ho shaam-o-sahar karte hain
raah pe rehte hain
yaadon pe basar karte hain
khush raho ahl-e-watan
ho ham to safar karte hain
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
saa maa
aise ujdde aashiyaane
tinke udd gaye
ho aise ujdde aashiyaane
tinke udd gaye
bastiyoon tak aate aate
raste mudd gaye
ham thehar jaayen jahaan
ho usko sheher karte hain
ho raah pe rehte hain
yaadon pe basar karte hain
khush raho ahl-e-watan
ho ham to safar karte hain

This is a wonderful film. With fine performances all round. I happened to see it only recently (I’d seen it ages ago and completely forgotten its storyline). Just loved every minute of it.
This song is beautiful too. Typical Gulzar-Pancham-Kishore da. Thanks, Harvey.

If my memory serves me right, there is another picturised version of this song is there, whether this is another verison, which comes in between the movie. I am not sure, Please correct me If I am wrong,This video seems to be longer one to me:

Recently I watched this movie on Doordarshan, it contained a happy ending where Sharmila and Sanjeev meet.
And in some version of the movie Waheeda`s Mujra “Badi der se megha barsaa ho raamaa” was deleted by telecasting channel people or edited or altogether they have deleted this song from the movie. God only knows, whey these people doing such things.

Sorry for my late answer.
The video, which you have posted is identical to the one in the post above. Both are 5:20 long.
As I have mentioned, even on my VCD, there is the happy ending, but I still remember that the version shown on DD in the 80s had a sad ending.
You are right, the way the cut and delete is awful and not worthy of the classics.
