Yoonhi gaate raho

Posted on: August 9, 2013

This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Here is a song that I have wanted to send for quite some now. I will call it rare in the sense that the duet is with male singers —Kishore Kumar and S P Balasubramaniam. The two heroes are Rishi Kapoor and Kamalhaasan. The picturisation shows the heroes dancing in a local joint- call it a bar or an eating house or Tavern (I think that is the right word) run by Dimple and her dad Saeed Jaffrey.

The movie is Saagar which was Dimple’s comeback into movies after marriage with Rajesh Khanna. The song was written by Jaaved Akhtar and music was by R D Burman. The choreographer was P L Raj who very cleverly made it seem that Rishi Kapoor has matched Kamal Haasan step for step in the dance. Up until this movie I had thought Rishi could dance a fair bit but this song proved otherwise.

This movie was released on 9th august, 1985. That means we can call this an anniversary song of sorts? What say? And that also makes this a vintage song – it is 28 years old!!!! 😉

I remember seeing this movie in a late-night show in 1985 in a cinema hall in Sion, Bombay (I forget the name of the cinema hall now). Was it Roopam?

Had completely forgotten about this song – thanks for bringing it back to my memory, Peevisie’s Mom. 🙂

Then this was Roopam, for sure. 🙂

Roopam has changed to a Multiplex. Rivoli where I am staying is no more. Instead there is CHS in its place.

Thanks for the info. I haven’t been to that part of Mumbai for over 20 years so I have no clue what’s all changed in the meantime.

Hullo Nitinji
aftre i wrote the comment yesterday i called my dad who gave me a brief history of Roopam, Rivoli, Aurora, Paradise etc in the Mahim-Matunga-Sion belt. and also updated me on the current status of Laxmi (Vile Parle) Sangam(Andheri east -J.B.Nagar) Shree (don’t remember where it used to be) Usha (Andheri east no?) etc. seems only Bahar (Parle east) has been reconstructed. and i Lament the demise of Ambar-Oscar-Minor. where i ve seen the maximum number of movies in my childhood.

Peevesie’s Mom,

You mentioned in your write-up that Rishi Kapoor has matched Kamal Haasan step for step in the dance. I wanted to check this because Kamal Hasan was a trained dancer while Rishi Kapoor was not. Since both the video clips of the song posted here are not working, I have given below the link of a new video clip of the song .

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Watching this song on video, I also observe that S P Balasubramaniam has also sung in high octave in tandem with the mood of the song. Kishore Kumar has equally marched with his high pitch rendition despite the fact that had had just recuparated from an heart attack at that time and doctor had advised him not to sing in high pitch.
