This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music anda regular contributor to this blog.
The songs written by him were a rage in the 70s and 80s. Sample the following – “Rotey Huye Aate Hain Sab, Hansta Hua Jo Jaayegaa. . .”(‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, 1978), “Maano To Main Ganga Maa Hoon, Naa Maano Te Behtaa Paani”(‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, 1978), “O Khaike Paan Barnaaras Waala”(‘Don’,1978), “Pag Ghunghroo Baandh Meera Naachi Thi”(‘Namak Halaal’, 1982), “Jahaan Chaar Yaar Mil Jaayen” (‘Sharaabi’, 1984), “Gori Hain Kalaayi’aan, Tu La De Mujhe Hari Hari Choodiyaan” (‘Aaj Ka Arjun’, 1990). And not that the 60s was bereft of his creations. The rustic and earthy “Pipraa Ke Patwaa Sarikhe Doley Manwaa” (‘Godaan’, 1963), or velvety romanticism of “Bahaaro Thaam Lo Ab Dil, Mera Mehboob Aata Hai”(‘Namaste ji’, 1965), or the delicately sensuous “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe Aaj Nayaa Noor Hai”(‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’, 1966), or pensive sounds of “Aaj Tumse Door Ho Kar, Aise Royaa Mera Pyaar”(‘Ek Raat’, 1967), or the fun filled song of intoxication “Bina Badraa Ke Bijuriyaa Kaise Chamke”(‘Bandhan’, 1969) – endearing gems all, spread out over a career that lasted over four decades.
The pen that crafted these timeless verses laid itself to rest with the passing away of Laal ji Pandey, better known to music lovers as Anjaan –this day sixteen years ago (03 Sep, 1997). And a befitting day to celebrate the 100th song written by him to make it on this blog.
The educational qualification of the young Laal ji Pandey was in commerce and economics. Born in Varanasi (Benaras) on 28th October, 1930, he belonged to a family of well educated people. His grandfather was one of the chief astrologers in Benaras. None else in his family before him had any connection or any inclination towards poetry and literature. But Laal ji turned out to be the prodigal son in the family. While still at school, his poetical creations started to get him recognition in the local literary circles in his home town, and he soon started to participate in the local poetry sessions (kavi sammelans and mushairaas). While at college, he made up his mind to make his hobby and this talent his profession. After completing his studies in 1953, the call of the film industry brought him to Bombay, to try his luck with song writing for films.
His first break was in 1954, when actor Premnath commissioned him to write some songs for his maiden venture a producer and director – ‘Golcunda Ka Qaidi’. The songs “Lehar Ye Dole, Koyal Bole, Jhoom Rahi Phoolon Ki Daar” sung by Sudha Malhotra and “Utha Ke Sar Chalo Jawaan” sung by Rafi Sb, gained some immediate attention for him. In the next five to six years, he continued to share song writing responsibility with other poets, writing for films like ‘Sau Ka Note’ (1955), ‘Maai Baap’ (1957), ‘Sair e Paristaan’(1958), ‘Saahil’ (1959) and ‘Jaali Note’ (1960). There are songs from these films that are notable and hummable, many of them being favorites from the radio listening days.
In 1960 he got his first opportunity to write independently for a film –‘Lambe Haath’. The one song of this film, sung by Rafi Sb became an iconic favorite and still continues to attract attention on specific occasions. The song – “Pyaar Ki Raah Dikhaa Duniya Ko, Roke Jo Nafrat Ki Aandhi”. This film established him as one of the more important lyricists in the industry. In the subsequent years there came his way, assignments that allowed him to showcase his talent for popular success. Films like ‘Godaan’ (1963),‘Faulaad’ (1963), ‘Namaste ji’ (1965), ’Bahaare Phir Bhi Aayengi’ (1966),‘Sangdil’ (1967) and ‘Bandhan’ (1969) brought out some of the best songs that were sitting inside him.
With his pairing with Kalyanji Anandji in the 1970s, and with Bhappi Lahiri in the 1980s, he was able to capture the imagination of the listening public, with poetry that both had substance and a popular appeal. Across the forty years or so of his career, he has penned more than 600 songs for more than 150 films. The listing of his films show a pre eminence of this association with films of Amitabh Bachchan, and the also depict his long term association with the production house of Prakash Mehra. His other significant contributions are in the Bhojpuri film industry, where he paired with music director Chitragupt in many films to create many a popular hits. He also has a collection of poetry titled ‘Ganga Ta’t Ka Banjaara’, that was released a few months before his passing away. Notable trivia – his son, Sameer, is also a lyricist of repute in the Hindi film industry.
For this post today, as I searched for one of his earlier creations going back to the 1950s, my attention was captured by this enchanting song, that once was quiet popular on the radio waves. Now, it seems it has become rare and obscure. But I am sure when you hear it, you will say – ah yes, right, have heard it before, and have been waiting for it to re-appear.
The film is from 1960 – ‘Lady Of The Lake’. Music is by Suresh-Talwar. This name does not seem to ring any significant bells in the mind. However, this music director duo has done some notable work for about a dozen films in the 1950s and 60s. Not much information is available about the background and the life of these two composers. From cursory examination of the Geet Kosh, one can identify that Suresh, one of this duo, has possibly composed independently also for another handful of films, as Suresh and / or Suresh Kumar.
The song is a lilting melody of a birthday celebration, with a very pleasant shifting of pace and rhythm that keeps the song tuned to the ears. Lovely rendition by Sudha Malhotra that is sure to pour a sweetness on the mind. Listen and enjoy. And remember Anjaan today, with a salute for his century of songs posted here.
Song-Khushiyon ka din aaya sapne sanwaar ke (Lady of the lake)(1960) Singer-Sudha Malhotra, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Suresh Talwar
Chorus
Lyrics
khushiyon ka din aaya
sapne sanwaar ke
kaliyon ke hothon pe hain
geet bahaar ke
kehne lagaa aaj mera dil ye pukaar ke
kya
teri umar ho laakh baras ki
zindagi hansti ho
aankhon mein masti ho
laakh baras ki umar ho
chaand sitaare tera roop sajaayen
hansti bahaaren sadaa rang lutaayen
ho ooo ooo ooo ooo
ho ooo ooo ooo ooo
hooo. . .
chaand sitaare tera roop sajaayen
hansti bahaaren sadaa rang lutaayen
taraane pyaar ke
naye sansaar ke
hamesha tu gaaye re
khushiyon ka din aaya
sapne sanwaar ke
kaliyon ke honthon pe hain
geet bahaar ke
haan. . . kehne lagaa aaj mera dil ye pukaar ke
kya
teri umar ho laakh baras ki
zindagi hansti ho
aankhon mein masti ho
laakh baras ki umar ho
ho na khazaana tera khushiyon se khaali
roz manaaye tu ye hansti diwaali
ho ooo ooo ooo ooo
ho ooo ooo ooo ooo
hooo. . .
ho na khazaana tera khushiyon se khaali
roz manaaye tu ye hansti diwaali
umangon se bharaa
janam din ye tera
laut ke phir aaye re
khushiyon ka din aaya
sapne sanwaar ke
kaliyon ke honthon pe hain
geet bahaar ke
haan. . . kehne lagaa aaj mera dil ye pukaar ke
kya
teri umar ho laakh baras ki
zindagi hansti ho
aankhon mein masti ho
laakh baras ki umar ho

As far as my memory goes- Composer Suresh Kumar Shah, later married Gujarati Stage Artiste Pushpa Shah & they have 2 daughters, Ragini Shah & Chitra Shah. Both are known Gujarati artistes. Ragini can be seen in serial ‘Saraswatichandra’.
Please correct me if I am wrong!
