Varsha Ritu (1969) an album in an LP form was released by HMV to the delight of music lovers. Non-Film songs (NFS) were very much in vogue those days. Lata, Manna Dey, Begum Akhtar, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Lakshmi Shankar, Sudha Malhotra and Mubarak Begum had each one NFS in that album. Music for all except the first three in this list was composed by an HMV staff artist Murli Manohar Swarup.

The song of this presentation is a famous poetry by poetess Sumitra Kumari Lahiri rendered melodiously by swar-saamragini Lata-ji and the music was by her brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar. This song is a real tribute to Lata-ji whose birth day is recently celebrated by millions of music lovers throughout the world. Hridayanath has composed many Non-Film songs of her in Hindi and Marathi.

The classical based song in Megh-Malhar is a treat to the ears of common men as well as classically tuned listeners. It so beautifully conveys pure love heightened in romantic Sawan, along with its underlying pathos. The musical composition has been so well orchestrated; sitar, tabla beat and flute pieces in between; and Lata Ji’s celestial voice cascading in its own curves of beauty. What a wonderful rendition by Lataji with all the musical nuances such as alaaps, gamak, and murkis. And an equally wonderful composition by her brother, Hridaynath, for this seasonal “geet”.

Lyrics

ghiri ghataayen aasman par
ghiri ghataayen aasman par
piya ki yaad jagaaye ri
ghiri ghataayen aasman par

umad ghumad kar shor machaate
umad ghumad kar
umad ghumad kar shor machaate
jaise baadal kaale
waise hi to chhal chhal chhalke
aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa
aaa aaa aaa
chhal chhal chhalke
do naina matwaale
mad se bhari teer barsaati
chalne lagi hawaayen
piya ki yaad jagaaye ri
ghiri ghataayen aasmaan par

amraayi ki ghani daaliyon
par koyalia kaali
hook utha kar
aag lagaa kar
ni pa
ma pa ga ma re sa
re ni sa
ma pa ga ma ni dh ni sa
dh ni sa re ni sa ni pa ma pa ga
aa re ni sa
hook utha kar
aag lagaa kar
dhulkaati madhu pyaali
hindole jhoolan veli
sakhiyaan kajri gaaye
piya ki yaad jagaaye ri
ghiri ghataayen aasman par
piya ki yaad jagaaye ri
ghiri ghataayen aasman par

This song always gives me goosebumps. I used to listen to it on the radio when I was a young girl.

Now I am curious about the songs others sang 🙂

I hope you will be able to introduce us to other songs in this LP as well.

Thank you very much Bharatji.
