Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.

Two years have passed since, and now the distance to the magic target of 10,000 is reduced from 5000 to 1100. Aah, yes, today we are on to the 8900th song on this blog. Diwali is still a good week away, but for this blog and the merry musical bandwagon, the season celebrations are starting today with this post.

Celebrations on this blog are becoming a habit now, with all types and categories of events to be honored and celebrated. Century milestones of various kinds, anniversaries, festivals, important events. . . there is so much happening on each and every day of the week that there are times that we even miss out certain anniversaries, as these celebrations keep piling one on top of the other. Some days back, the 700th milestone of songs written by Rajendra Krishan passed almost unnoticed. Atul ji had reminded me about it, and in the midst of so many other things that are happening both on the personal as well as the blog front, this milestone got missed. I have it in mind to make up for it. (I know, you are thinking – ‘he can’t be serious, really’ 🙂 ).

And yes, you guessed it right. We are celebrating another significant milestone today. With this post, Hemant Da reaches his double century of songs posted on this blog, as a music director. Hemant Da is much more famous as the owner of that deep bass voice that has brought so many wonderful songs into existence for the pleasure of music lovers. Many do not realize that he has been very active as a music director also, especially in the decades of 1950 and 1960. During almost twenty five years of his active career as a music director, Hemant Da has created music for about 60 films in Hindi cinema.

Before entering the Hindi films, he had made a name for himself with his creations for Bangla cinema. In 1952, when he debuted on to the Hindi film scene with the film ‘Anand Matth’, he made an immediate impression with the rousing composition of Bankim Chandra Chatterji’s national song Vande Matram). Before this composition, a song of such national fervor was variously composed in slower rhythms and softer tones. Hemant Da converted this song into the battle cry of the warriors of independence. None could have imagined that this song would be set to such a fierce tempo and notes that scale the skies, keeping pace with galloping horses on the battlefield. And over the decades, this composition has become a benchmark. Many more have tried their hands at it, but none have come closer to the electrifying gusto that is the magic created by Hemant Da.

Born in a middle class family, his father Kalidas Mukherjee was a clerk in a shipping company. A salaried gentleman, his focus was a job and the upkeep of his family. There was no music or any other art form in the domestic environment, other than the traditional ingredients of a Bangla household. And yet, the young Hemant developed a penchant for singing, even without any formal training. There were occasional complaints from school teachers that this student was less interested in the subjects of study, and more involved with his own dreams of music and singing. Being the kind of person his father was, Kalidas Babu felt insecure and apprehensive about the future of this young lad. He tried to counsel his son, telling him about the importance of studies, and to find a well paying job. But the musical interests of the child were pretty deep rooted.

Recognizing the depth of his interest, Kalidas Babu finally took his son to a family friend and well wisher, Subhash Mukherjee. He narrated his problem. Subhash Babu, instead of counseling the young lad, asked him to sing something. The young Hemant sang a small poem by Rabindranath Tagore. Subhash Babu felt the sparkle in the boy. He talked to Kalidas Babu, and then took young Hemant to All India Radio, where he got an opportunity to be part of the station’s musical programs. It was here that Hemant came in touch with Jagmohan, and thus started a friendship that would last a lifetime.

His father was still set on education and a secure job as the future plans for his son. Hemant got admission in the Engineering College at Jadavpur University, at his father’s insistence. But he did not stay long in the college. Midway, he abandoned his studies, and started frequenting the offices of recording companies. And lo, there was this disappointing setback in store. After the singing auditions, all recording companies declined to hire him, saying that his voice was not good enough.

Finding himself at a very difficult cross roads, he eventually learnt typing and started work as a stringer in a couple of magazines. From being a typist, he moved on to writing stories, and started to get published in the magazines he worked at. At the offices of ‘Vaatayan’, one of the magazines that he worked for, one day the editor introduced him to Shailen Dasgupta, the music chief of the Columbia Recording company. The tide of fortunes at last took a turn for good, and Shailen Babu agreed to give him a chance. Starting with Rabindranath’s poetic creations, within one year itself, Hemant had recorded 12 records. His singing started to be noticed by the listeners, and his career started to rise.

At this juncture, Shailen Babu suggested him to get trained in classical music. He tried, but did not last too long with that effort either. Still, one good thing was leading to the next. He recorded some songs by Faiyyaaz Hashmi composed by Kamal Dasgupta, that became immensely popular. Songs like “Aaj Sharaabi Aankhin Mein” and Aanchal se kyun baandh liya mujh pardesi ka pyaar became hits with the listening public. Kamal Dasgupta took him on as an assistant. ‘Nimai Sanyaas’ was the first Bangla film that he sang for, under the direction of Hari Prasanna Das. ‘Iraada’ (1944) was his first Hindi film as a singer, the latter being under the music direction of Pt. Amarnath.

1945 was an important year for him. He got married to Bela Mukherjee, one of his students, and he got his first break as a music director with the Bangla film ‘Poorvraag’. The film did not do well, and so did ‘Abhiyaatri’ (1947), his second outing as a music director. But after this, he had a string of hits in ‘Bhooli Naai’ (1948), ‘Dinair Par Din’ (1949) and ‘Swami’ (1949). He met with and became friends with Salil Chaudhry, and through him, he was introduced into the IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) movement. In those years of political ferment, the song written and composed by Salil da and sung by Hemant Da – “Kono Ek Gaayer Bodhu” became immensely popular with the masses. There followed many songs written about the common working class people. His music for the film ‘Jindhaasa’ (1951) was highly praised, and so was Hemen Gupta’s ‘Anand Matth’. The music was a hit.

And so, in 1952, when ‘Anand Matth’ was remade in Hindi, under the banner of Filmistan, the entire team of the Bangla film was invited to Bombay. Thus started the career of Hemant Da in Hindi films. The music of this debut film immediately established Hemant Da in the Hindi film world. Besides the iconic Vande Matram, almost all songs hit their mark with the listening public, including the utterly sweet rendition of Jaidev’s “Dheere Sameere Tarni Teere”, which is not released on a record and is available on the sound track only.

The following months were not very encouraging. Although the music directors in the industry started to use Hemant Da’s voice – notable films being ‘Sazaa’, ‘Jaal’, ‘Anarkali’, ‘Aagosh’, ‘Shikast’ etc., no meaningful opportunities were coming up as a music director. After about a year, Hemant Da made up his mind to return to Calcutta. But Shashadhar Mukehrjee of Filmistan convinced him to stay back, and offered him new assignments. One of these was ‘Shart’ (1954). And yet once again, Hemant Da made an immediate impact with songs of the ilk Dekho Wo Chaand Chhup Ke Karta Hai Kya Ishaare), and the iconic Na Ye Chaand Hoga Na Taare Rahenge. The songs took on the heart and lips of the listening public.

But it was the second assignment that made Hemant Da scale the heights as never before. The Pradeep Kumar, Vijayantimala starrer ‘Naagin’, is a film with very slim story and histrionics content. And yet, the public thronged the cinema halls – just to listen to the songs. Mann Doley Mera Tan Doley Mere Dil Ka Gayaa Qaraar Re) became one of the leading hit songs of the year. For the music of this film, HMV implemented a stratagem, probably for the first time in the history of recording industry. The company distributed one thousand sets of records of this film, free to hotels and restaurants in all cities across the country, with instructions to play them continuously. The ploy worked, and the songs of this film found their place in the lips and hearts of the common man on the street. To this day, the music of this film has stood the test of popularity, across time and across generations.

1954 saw the release of another Filmistan production – ‘Jaagriti’. Once again, the music by Hemant Da created impressions in the minds of the public that have been everlasting. The song Chalo Chalen Maa, Sapnon Ke Gaaon Mein) is a gem of a creation, as are the other rousing patriotic songs for which this film has become a benchmark.

After 1954, there was no looking back for Hemant Kumar. He had made a place for himself in the top category of music directors. Now the assignments followed one after the other. 1955 saw the release of ‘Bahu’ and ‘Bandish’. The years 1956 to 1959 were the busiest for him, with as many as twenty four films released with music by him. The list of films and the popular songs is something I will not even attempt to enumerate here. But I would surely like to mention the immortal classic for children that was a chance contribution by Hemant Da for the film ‘Maasoom’ (1960) Naani Teri Morni Ko Mor Le Gaye”.

Come 1962, and came the haunting sounds of Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil for the film ‘Bees Saal Baad’. The other songs are no less dear in this film, but this one song set a standard that probably had not been heard for over a decade since the time of ‘Mahal’ (1949) and the sound of Aayega Aayegaa Aayegaa Aanewaala lingering ghostly sounds of Zaraa Dekh Le Aa Kar Parwaane created an aura of fathomless suspense that caught the imagination of the listening public as never in a long time.

And then, Hemant Da came to be known as the creator of such lingering unforgettable melodies. This influence can be seen so strongly in many films that followed – ‘Saahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ (1962) with Koi door se aawaaz de chale aao, ‘Kohraa’ (1964) with “Jhoom Jhoom Dhatli Raat”
Jhoonm jhoom jalti raat, ‘Anupama’ (1966) with Kuchh Dil Ne Kahaa, Kuchh Bhi Nahin, ‘Sannaata’ (1966) with Sooni Raat Mein, Kho Gaye Chaand Ke Saaye), ‘Khamoshi’ (1969), Tum pukaar lo , ‘Us Raat Ke Baad’ (1970) with “Meri Awaaz Kisi Shor Mein Gar Doob Gayi, Meri Khaamoshi Bahut Door Sunaai Degi” and ‘Bees Saal Pehle’ (1972) with “Aaj Bhi Hamaara Dil Ghabraaye, Aaj Bhi Hai Aankhen Beqaraar”. This set of songs is a genre all by itself, and will always find a place in selections of haunting melodies.

There is a very interesting episode associated with the song Kahin deep jale kahin din, which is an episode of significance for Lata ji. During the months of 1961 when the songs of this film were being recorded, Lata ji was very much down in health, and had not been taking singing assignments for an elongated period of time. Hemant Da had assigned this song to Geeta Dutt. However, there were lines that Geeta ji was not able to bring in the delicate accent that Hemant Da was looking for. He apologized to Geeta ji, and decided to have Lata ji sing this song. Coming up from a bout of bad health, Lata ji was also low in confidence, for she believed that the illness had affected her voice and that she would not be able to sing well again. She hesitantly joined for rehearsals, but was depressed. With every rehearsal, she would be dissatisfied, and add to her mental worries. Hemant Da, without telling her, got one of the rehearsals recorded, and then played it back for Lata to listen. This ‘rehearsal’ recording became the final recording, and also it dispelled the depressing notions that Lata ji was carrying in her mind.

The songs that make one sit up and remember with pleasure, are many. Kashti Ka Khamosh Safar Hai from ‘Girl Friend’ (1960) Ye muhfil sitaaron ki from ‘Arab Ka Saudagar’ (1956); Kahaan Le Chale Ho, Bata Do Musaafir, Sitaaron Se Aage Ye Kaisa Jahaan Hai from ‘Durgeshnandini’ (1956); Hawaaon Pe Likh Do Hawaaon Ke Naam from ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ (1968); Ye hansta hua kaarwaan zindagi kafrom ‘Ek Jhalak’ (1957); Zindagi kitni khoobsoorat hai from ‘Bin Baadal Barsaat’ (1963); “Chal Akela Chal Akela Chal Akela” from ‘Raahgeer’ 1969. . . the selections are numerous and the time is short. I will cease the sampling here, but I am sure the readers will add many more to this list.

Hemant Da’s last film in Hindi cinema is ‘Love In Canada’ released in 1979. The chasm between the styles he worked with and the styles and the characteristics of the films that were gaining ground in the 1970s and 80s, increased. Hemant Da left Bombay and relocated to Calcutta. In all this while that we have been reading about his contributions to the Hindi cinema, he had always continued to work with the Bangla cinema. The towering presence that he has in the Bangla films and music will need a much longer write up to express. His presence in the non-film arena is equally impressive and will take another such article to cover. I leave those descriptions for some future posts.

For the milestone song, I have selected a very endearing melody from the 1969 film ‘Raahgeer’. The words are crafted by Gulzar – one can make out the from the interesting play of words and rhymes. The singing voice is of Hemant Da himself. A whole thesis sung in the praise of the eyes of the beloved. The expressions of the poet are just inevitable, the music is lovely and the rendering – it catches one in the heart.

At the outset, the lyrics, the musical composition and the rendition of this song appear simple. But it is not so. The lyrics are written in prose style without much of a rhyme. I am sure if this song was to be comnposed by some of the prominent music directors of that time, they would have forced Gulzar to change the style and presentation of lyrics to facilitate them in saving time and efforts in composing the song. Probably, Hemant Kumar took this lyrics as a challenge to compose. I would say that it was more than worth an effort, turning the complexity in lyrical style in to the simplicity in composition and rendition.

The style of lyrics in this song reminds me of poems of Surya Kant Tripathi ‘Nirala’, one of the doyens among Hindi poets of early 20th century. He was the first to write poems in prose style without rhymes.

Yes, we have already hit the magic 5 Million mark today. And there are more than one thousand hits beyond that already.

This is a grand event for this blog, and as Nitin ji has said, fireworks are already on. This 5 million milestone is a major achivement, and today’s date must be recorded as a red letter day in the chronology of this blog.

This much traffic is a fantastic number by the internet standards. This blog is a specialized site. It is not a social networking or a news or an entertainment site. For a site like ours, this is a singular achievement, and all the credit goes to Atul ji, for his dedicated leadership, and the entire team for making this as the most interesting website related to Hindi film msic on the internet.

A great achievement, and best wishes for greater milestones to conquer. 🙂
