This is the 6th song in the series “Gems from obscure films”. This one is really a vintage Gem, a song sung by Kishore kumar in his early years for the film SHAMSHEER-53 under the baton of Arunkumar Mukherjee.

Arun Kumar Mukherji is a case in point how in those days people were attracted towards this film industry. Arunkumar Mukherjee was born on 14-2-1912 at Calcutta. He was a maternal cousin( their mothers were sisters) of actor Ashok kumar. Arunkumar, after his education started a prospering business in Nagpur. Enamoured by the All India fame of Ashok kumar ,he too aspired to join films. He was a good singer anyway. Finally, Ashok kumar got him a job in Bombay Talkies as a singer on a salary of Rs. 60/- p.m.

His first song in Nirmala-38 was a hit but he got a good name only after his songs in Bandhan-40 got very famous, particularly the song “Chana jor garam’. He sang in Kangan, Bandhan, Azaad, Punarmilan, Jhoola, Anjaan, Naya Sansar etc etc. His song-Dheere dheere aa re badal, main to dilli se dulhan laaya re, naacho naacho pyare etc became very popular. He sang about 70 songs in 28 films.

As a Music Director,he gave music in Pratima-45, Shamsheer-53, Parineeta-53, Samaaj-54 and Teen Bhai-55

His death was very tragic. He was returning from a trial show of ‘Bandish’ along with cousin Ashok Kumar in his car. All of a sudden, he got a massive heart attack and he died instantly on the lap of the man who had brought him to the films in Bombay-Ashok Kumar. The date was 6-12-1955. He was only 43 year old at that time.

Today’s song is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Kishore had sung his first song in Ziddi-a solo. He also sang a duet in that film. In 1948, he sang only these two songs. In 1949 he sang just 3 songs, and in 1950 Kishore sang only 10 songs. Thus in the first 3 years from 48 to 50, he sang only 15 songs. In the following decade of the 50s, that is from 1951 to 1960, Kishore had a gala time and became famous as a major singer having maximum Hit songs than anyone else. He preferred to sing only for Dev Anand and for himself and stuck to his decision for a long time.

Almost every Music Director in those times got him singing, except probably Hemant kumar. In those days, there was an unspoken divide between Music directors from Bengal. Burman and Anil Biswas were from East Bengal and Hemant kumar and Salil Chaudhari were from West Bengal. Since Kishore was a favourite of Burman and Biswas, the other two Music Directorss rarely used Kishore. Their Kishore songs must be quite small in number.

From 1-1-1950 to 31-12-1953, Kishore Kumar had sung 51 songs. His yodelling also flourished from this period. It had started from a song in Muqaddar itself in 1948. It also became his Trademark. It is commonly believed that a less known Music Director Jimmy aka James Singh taught Kishore kumar how to yodell. Jimmy himself was a master of yodelling. In most songs of Kishor in the 50s one finds a liberal use of Yodelling in his songs.

However ,personally, more that his yodelling or his fun songs, I like his sad songs. In my opinion, no singer provides that kind of pathos and sadness in songs as Kishore. His sad songs from Ziddi, Funtoosh, Mr.X in Bombay, Jhumroo or Door gagan ki chhaon mein are unforgettable for me. The voice of Kishore Kumar in his songs of 50s is so sweet, touching and heartwarming that each of his early song is a Gem by itself.

Today’ s song is from film ” Shamsheer “-53, a costume drama made by Sargam Pictures and directed by Gyan Mukherjee. The music was by Arunkumar Mukherjee and Anupam Ghatak, each sharing 3 songs each of the total 6 songs in the film. Their assistant in this film was Nikhil Ghosh, who, independently, had composed some outstanding NFS for Geeta Dutt and others.

During the period of early 50s, southern actress P.Bhanumathi had become so popular that she was called to Bombay to act in Hindi films. She was very poor in Hindi and had to be provided a dubbing artiste for her dialogues. Due to her busy schedule in the south and her difficulty with Hindi, she did only a few films here. She had also directed the film ” Chandirani’-53- a film made in Hindi/Telugu and Tamil. Bhanumathi was a very learned person. She had written several short stories and her autobiography too. She was A.P. Sahitya Academy Award winner. She was a member of the Academy and Lalit Kala Academy for 10 years. She worked as a Director/principal of a Government Music school also. She was a social worker, a member of the Red cross and she established several schools to impart free education for the deprived.

The cast of Shamsheer was Ashok Kumar, Bhanumathi, Smriti Biswas, Bhagwan, Nana Palshikar etc . Though the film was made by Sargam pictures the distribution rights were obtained by the waning Bombay Talkies.

the story of the film was about a popular rebel Vikram of the Kathiawad region in Gujarat. The king was a tyrant and levied heavy taxes on the subject. His army used to loot the poor and oppressed. Overall the kingdom was an anarchy. Vikram stood against all this and the general public supported him too. The king was looking for an opportunity to destroy Vikram. He played a trick. He used his own beloved Rupam to entice Vikram and arrest him. Roopam does her job skillfully and Vikram is captured by the king. Vikram is tortured in the jail. Roopam could not see his woes. She actually realised that while fooling Vikram, she had fallen in his love. With the help of some supporters, Roopam rescues Vikram, but she is captured.

The king announces that if Vikram does not surrender immediately, Roopam will be killed. Vikram hatches a plan. he surrenders, while his supporters attack the army and thus rescue Roopam. There is a war between Vikram and the King in which the king is killed. The people are overjoyed and crown Vikram as their king. Roopam becomes his queen.

now let us enjoy this vintage Kishore duet with Asha from this film.
