We in this blog try to discuss songs on the anniversaries of artists. Today (11 december 2013) is the first death anniversary of Pt Ravishankar (7 april 1920- 11 december 2012). So I decided to discuss a Hindi movie song involving him.
Pt Ravishankar has composed music in just a handful of Hindi movies, namely “Anuradha” (1960), “Godaan” (1963) and Meera (1979). When I checked up, I found that all songs of “Anuradha” (1960) and “Godaan” (1963) have already been discussed. So I was left with only “Meera” (1979) whose songs could be discussed on the occasion. Much later, after I had noted down a song from “Meera” (1979) for discussion, I realised that “Neecha Nagar” (1946) is also one of the movies where Pt Ravishankar had compose music.
Here is a song from “Meera” (1979). This song is a background song which is sung by Vani Jairam while the picturisation shows a doli carrying Hema Malini being carried by doli bearers.
Meera Bai (1998-1557), who lived five centuries ago and on whose life this song is based in the lyricist for all songs of this movie. 🙂 So the movie makers saved money on hiring a lyricist. 🙂 Though Gulzar, the maker of this movie may have helped getting the lyriv=cs fine tuned for the movie.
Pt Ravi Shankar is the music director, of course.

I simply love all Meera Bhajans. Whether they are by MS Subbalakshmi, Hridaynath Mangeshkar or Ravi Shanker.
I remember listening to the bhajans from this movie over and over again after the movie came out. Vani Jayaram’s voice suited the bhajans so well. I liked the movie as well. One of the movies where Hema actually scores, another being Ek Chadar Maili Si.

Agree with Ava regarding Meera’s songs. Watched this movie again just two weeks back. Hema has proved her ability being a true actress. Haven’t seen Ek Chadar Maili Si yet, but will take Ava’s words and find some time to watch it. 🙂
