The best memory I have of this artist is the visual from ‘Araadhna’ (1969), sitting in the driver seat, looking crisp and dapper in a suit and matching cap, driving single handedly and playing mouth organ with the free hand, maneuvering the vehicle so that it keeps pace with the small toy train as it wounds its way on the hilly trek to Darjeeling, thus enabling a free hand to Rajesh Khanna to perform his gymnastics in the open top vehicle, as he belts out the now iconic “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu”, serenading a coy Sharmila Tagore sitting in a window seat of the train, hiding her face behind Alistair MacLean’s novel, ‘When Eight Bells Toll’, but also peeking from the edges of the book that she is obviously not reading.
The actor playing the mouth organ and driving single handed on the hillside roads, is Shamsher Singh. Ah yes, he is better known to the industry and the audience as Sujeet Kumar. One of many new faces who arrived in Bombay at the beginning of 1960, entering the industry with dreams of being a hero, but very soon had to be contended with supporting and character roles. Although very smart and handsome, his persona just did not click as the male lead in the handful of films that he did appear as a hero.
Remembering Sujeet Kumar on his anniversary of birth today (7 february 2014).
Born Shamsher Singh in 1934 on this date, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, he appears to have made a simultaneous debut in both Hindi and Bhojpuri cinema at the beginning of 1960s. We see the start of his film career in 1960, with short appearances in films like ‘Honeymoon’ (1960), ‘Ek Musafir Ek Hasina’ (1962), ‘Private Detective’ (1962), ‘China Town’ (1962), ‘Mere Armaan Mere Sapne’ (1963) and ‘Kohraa’ (1964), with some of his appearances being uncredited. Side by side, he also had roles to play in Bhojpuri films – ‘Ganga Maiyyaa Tohre Piyari Chadaibo’ (1962) and ‘Bidesiya’ (1963). In 1965 he got his first break as the male lead in ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ and then followed up with two more leading performances in 1966 – ‘Labela’ produced by Bhagwan Dada, and ‘Laal Banglaa’. In 1967 he was still playing lead roles in films ‘Lamboo In Hongkong’ and ‘Sub Ka Ustad’, but it was becoming clear that he was not able to break into the A grade cinema. His appearances as a hero were in the ‘B’ grade films produced by the likes of Sheikh Mukhtar and Jugal Kishore – typical cops and robbers thriller films. This trend in his career continued with films like ‘Lahu Pukaarega’ (1968) and ‘Gunda’ (1969). But of course did not last very long.
In parallel, he was making impressive appearances in supporting roles. In 1966, it was ‘Pati Patni’. In 1967, it was ‘Aankhen’ and ‘Aulaad’. In 1969, it was his role as Rajesh Khanna’s friend that more or less sealed his career path in the industry. A notable film during this period is ‘Gustakhi Maaf’ from 1969, where he shares the lead role with Sanjeev Kumar, both playing brothers in the film, opposite to a dual role of Tanuja. This film is an enjoyable comedy fare in which young Sujeet established his credentials for comic roles also. His performance is a wonderful foil to Sanjeev Kumar’s more familiar performance in a comic role.
His luck with Bhojpuri cinema turned out to be much better. In fact the artist and the cinema both gained from each other. A regional segment that was not doing too well, picked up steam with the appearance of Sujeet on the screen, and the Bhojpuri films became a successful regional segment.
In a career that lasted four decades, he has appeared in over 200 films in supporting and character roles. In the later part of his career, he also became a producer – notable films being ‘Aasmaan Se Ooncha’ (1989), ‘Daraar’ (1996) and ‘Champion’ (2000). He also directed one film – ‘Paan Khaaye Sainyyaan Hamaaro’ a 1984 Bhojpuri production.
Sujeet Kumar passed away in 2010, just two days before his 76th birthday, bringing down the curtain on a long and active career.
The song that I present today is a delightful song in which Sujeet Kumar is wooing his lady love, Prema Narayan. As the interaction starts, the lady is on foot, carrying the large ‘gaagar’ (metal container) walking to the river to fill water. The lover in pursuit is riding a tonga, keeping pace so that he is behind the lady, watching her movements as she walks ahead of him. And of course the, if a poet is placed in this situation, he is going to come up with this delightful lyrics that praise and extol the enticing movements of the feminine charm in motion. The situation being rural, the words and expressions are going to be utilizing all the latitude and license that a poet can avail of. The result is a wonderfully done song in all aspects – lyrics, composition, singing voice and performance.
The film is ‘Dangal’, a 1977 production from the banner of Vimal Chitra, Bombay, directed by Bachubhai Shah. The six songs in this film are composed by Nadeem-Shravan. The credits for lyrics are shared amongst three poets –Kulwant Jaani, S Bhaskar and Raajpati. This song is written by Raajpati.
The singing voice is that of Manna Dey, bringing in his characteristic exuberance applied to this song. The cast of actors includes Sujeet Kumar, Prema Narayan, Ram Singh, Iftekhar, Urmila Bhatt, Mukhtar Ahmed, Hari Shukla, Shubha Khote, CS Dubey, Shefali, Shekhar Purohit, Bhagwan Sinha, Dilip Sinha, Sahana, Rajrani, Rakhi-Umesh, Bhushan Tiwari, Lakshmi Chhaya, and Aruna Irani etc.
With remembrance and tribute to Sujeet Kumar. Enjoy this delightful song.
