Hindi Film Industry is like an ocean. As many rivers finally join the sea and lose their individuality, many artistes from all over the country join this industry and then lose their identity. Few are lucky and Talented who not only protect their identity but are also remembered for a long time. What happens to the artistes after they end their career ? Where do they go, what do they do ?

Today times have changed and youngsters joining the industry know about the uncertainties associated with the industry and realise that there is no guarantee of success or a long career here. So, they remain prepared for what they would do after films. In olden times, many people joined the industry because there was nothing else to do for them or they were attracted by the glitter of the Film industry. Such people suffered after their film careers ended. Without education or any other skills, they simply could not do anything else.

Once they were at their zenith in the industry, they rolled in riches, but when their time was up, they quickly touched their Nadir. There are some very pathetic cases like this involving well known artistes.

Master Nissar and Master Bhagwan once had fleet of cars, several Bungalows and millions of fans. After the end of their careers, they died in penury and anonymity.

Vatsala Kumthekar, actor Wasti, Singer Rattanbai, Khan Mastana and Parshuram were spotted begging on roads. The last days of G M Durrani, Meena Shorey, Karan Dewan, Bharat Bhushan and Vimi were spent in neglect, penury and anonymity.

I always wondered what artistes must be doing after they left the film world. Normally, women artistes got married and became housewives. Men, of course, if they had money like Ashok Kumar or any of the Kapoors, spent happy retired lives. Those who were not that lucky, died penniless.

But I know at least 4 cases, where the artistes left the film line and went on to a different field altogether.

Child actor SHASHI KAPOOR or Shashichand Kapoor(Bhakta Prahlad-46), did 21 films. Then he left films, completed his M.Sc.,LL.B, went to USA, did a Doctorate-Ph.D.- and taught Mathematics in an American University as a Professor for 21 years, before retiring happily.

Music Director Mukand Rai Trivedi of the Roy-Frank pair (Gogola-64), left films and joined his family business of Mines in M.P. and prospered beyond imagination.

Arjun Bakshi, Hero of film Malhar-1951 and few more films, left films and went to USA. There He started a Music shop and a business and was successful in that.

The strangest case is that of ASHRAF KHAN, singer-actor of the 40s (Roti-42) who left films after doing about 20 odd films and became a ……SUFI SAINT, with a following of millions all over the world.

So, we can see that there are many types of cases.

Can you guess, what is common in the following persons ?

1.S D Batish-singer/MD(14-12-1914 to 29-7-2006)
2.Phiroz Dastoor-Singer/MD ( 30-9-1912 to 9-5-2008)
3.Laxmi Shankar-Singer (16-6-1926 to 30-12-2013)
4.Manik Verma-Singer ( 16-5-1926 to 10-11-1996)
5.Firoza Begum-Singer (28-7-1930 to …)
6.Suresh Wadkar-Singer (7-8-1954 to …)

All these people left films and started Music Institutes or classes teaching aspiring singers. They also became more famous as classical singers and staged several shows all over the world.

One more name must be added to the above list and that is…….NIRMALA DEVI.

Nirmala Devi was born on 7-6-1928 in Benaras-U.P. She learnt music from her father and Ustad Atta Khan, Ustad Rehman Khan and bade Ghulam Ali Khan. She came to Bombay in 1941 and sang her first solo song and 2 duets in film Savera-1942, in which Arun Ahuja (her future husband) and Shobhana Samarth were the lead pair. After this started a long list of films-Sharda, Kaanoon Gaali, Geet,Jeevan, 40 Karod, Piya Milan, Sehra, Anmol Ratan, Janmashtami, Shama Parwana, Haseen, Musafirkhan, Jaagir, Lady Robinhood, Zara Bach ke, Ghunghat, Bahu betiyan, Jai Mahalaxmi, Haqdaar and finally Bawarchi-1972.

She married Arun Ahuja (actor Govinda’s father). They were very rich and stayed in a bungalow in Bandra, Bombay. In 1948, Arun Ahuja produced 2 films- Sehra and Jo hai saajan.

Sehra was a Flop and Jo hai saajan remained unreleased. He suffered heavy losses and had to sell everything and move to a far off suburb of Bombay-Virar, where their son Govinda was born.

After she had stopped singing in movies, their financial condition became pitiable. She decided to revive her singing career in in the field of classical singing and concentrated in singing Thumri. Music Director A R Qureshi arranged her programmes in a Music conference at Calcutta. Her programme was successful beyond expectation and then there was no looking back. She started performing in stage shows and came to be known for her Thumari singing.

Meanwhile her son Govinda became a successful actor. They bought a place in Juhu, Bombay and Nirmaladevi moved in here for the sake of convenience. She also started teaching music to aspirants and was flooded with students. Arun Ahuja continued to stay in Virar. Nirmala devi’s jugalbandi with Laxmi Shankar, Shobha Gurtu, Parween Sultana, Heerabai Badodekar and Girija Devi became talks of town. Several records of her singing came out too.

Nirmala Devi became ill in 1995 and died on 15-6-1996.

Today we will listen to Nirmala Devi’s DEBUT SOLO SONG from film Savera-1942. Remember, she was just 14 years of age then. This rare song was procured and uploaded on You Tube by our Sudhir ji. He also provided the song’s lyrics in English and Hindi. Thank you Sudhir ji.

With this song, we come to the end of our series DEBUT OR FIRST FILM SONGS, today. We have enjoyed 13 songs, right from 1933 to 1951. This journey has been very hectic but satisfying. The kind of comments our readers made, from time to time, on this Blog and by E Mails directly to me from India and abroad, were very encouraging and I am glad that they enjoyed this series. My thanks to Atul ji, Sudhir ji and Nitin Shah ji for their help.

Hope to see you again with yet another theme, someday in future….may be.

Dear Arunji
That was indeed a remarkable post. It is interesting how ups & downs come in life. This is not true only in the film industry, but is true in all walks of life.
But as I said earlier, it would really be very interesting and educative to note how people suffered financial doom and how they recovered, if they could.
Raj Kapoor suffered heavy losses after MERA NAAM JOKER flopped. He then made BOBBY. I heard, that on the trial show of this film, when his distributors saw the film, they started giving suggestions and suggested changes. Raj Kapoor heard them all. Then said, “Just because my one film flopped, you feel Raj Kapoor does not know how to make films. I will release the film without any changes. If you want to buy, buy otherwise go away. ”
All accepted, except for may be one or two. That is CONFIDENCE.
Film Industry is based on Public Tastes which keep changing. So you have to adopt to this.
