For this edition of Voice of Mukesh, I go back to 1947 and the film ‘Neel Kamal’. An unexpected and unlisted song from this film that has been sporadically heard and available on internet, but original version from the film in the voice of Mukesh is a scarce commodity. This song was pointed out to me by Harish ji Raghuvanshi, in one of his email responses to my queries about other unlisted songs of Mukesh or songs that were discovered after the publication of the Mukesh Geet Kosh by him.
This song is played as the credits are rolling across the screen. The presentation is in form of choral group singing, with Mukesh’s voice distinctly the leading voice.
‘Neel Kamal’ is one of the better known films from 1947. It is produced under the banner of Oriental Pictures and is directed by Kedar Sharma, who is also the lyricist for the 11 songs in this film. This particular song is a traditional stroram from the writings of the sages of yore. The music is composed by B Vasudev, a music director who is better known to us as Snehal Bhatkar. The cast of actors of this film includes Raj Kapoor, Begum Para, Madhubala, Rajinder, Shanta Kumar, Nafis Khalili, Baby Indira, Karan Singh, Pesi Patel, Subhashini, Pt Iqbal, Radha, Kumar Sahu etc. The films is just the 5th or 6th appearance on the screen for Raj Kapoor. And for Madhubala, it is one of her first appearances in an adult role. Before 1947, she has appeared in films as a child artist.
The version of this stotram presented in the film contains 5 verses, whereas the complete stotram actually consists of 15 verses. The complete text of this stotram in Devnagari and Roman scripts can be read here.
The stotram is composed in the esteemed reverence of Lord Krsna, and his pastimes.

Towards the end of the credits, there is a death note of tribute read as follow: ” to the ever-living memory of KAMALAJI who departedon the mahurat day..Jan. 10, 45…” Who’s Kamalaji? I am sure it’s not Kamala Nehru. Any guess? Thank you.

Yes, Derubalaji. Your guess needs to be right as Kamla Nehru died on Feb 28, 1936 (wiki). May be a relative of Kidar Sharma or could be the person assigned initially for a specific task in making this movie. Just my assumption. Will see if someone has a answer.

By way of clarification :
Kidar Sharma’s first wife was Raj Dulari with whom he lived till his death in April 1999. During the period of his service in Ranjit Movietone, he fell in love with Kamala Chatterji, sister of actress Sulochana Chatterji and married her. Unfortunately, she died shortly after the marriage. Kidar Sharma used to call her Kammo. So in his next film ‘Suhaag Raat’, he named the character of Geeta Bali as Kammo.

Thank you Sadanandji for another trivia. Now the question is if he was married to Raj Dulari with whom he lived till he died in 1999 then how can he get married to another lady during that time? Hindu marriage act doesn’t allow that. Sorry to trouble you more, but want to resolve this one more confusion.

As per Hindu Marriage Act, bigamy is both a civil and a criminal offence. However, police can take cognisance of the offence only when the first wife or her close relatives file a FIR. Similarly, the second wife’s relative can also file FIR with police. But if no body files complaint there is no case.
This is my understanding on the basis the general laws studied during my LLB which I left after two years in early 70s. However, I guess that there may not be substantive changes in the law relating to bigamy as it stands today.

A note to khyatiji, Let’s talk abt in today’s situation, in early 70’s..one of my friend, was in love with this guy, he married a girl chosen by his parents. Sometimes after marraige he comes to my friend and said It’s OK with his wife if she can come and live with them…this man was a rich, very well educated and from well known family..of course my friend refused that kind of arrangement. Here another just come to mind..one of my niece married to this guy (love marraige, six year ago), who mother is first wife to his father and his brother. Second wife with two sons and a daughter. And both ladies are happy to share one husband, A couple years ago, my niece has her own place. but even today both wives and husband r happy and living well not in some remote village… but Mumbai. Despite it being illegal, Hindus man can keep multiple wives..sad but true!!

The Hindu marriage act as a part of Hindu Code Bill was passed only in 1955. Till that time Bigamy was prevalent legally. Even in the present bill,the second marriage is null and void if the partner is alive. But the crux of the matter is that the living partner must himself/herself approach the court to get this second marriage nullified. only upon such complaint by the hurt party,the defaulter can be prosecuted,otherwise not. No third party complaint is entertained in such case.
This is very unfortunate,because many rich and powerful persons do the second marriage,while the partner is still alive,because they know she/he will not go to the court.
i know many cases where the unfortunate lady(first wife) refused to complain against her husband as she was “destined” to suffer.
If proved legaly,Begamy can get the offending person 7 years RI in jail.
Anyway,Kidar Sharma did ‘this’ before 1955.

Thank you Sadanandji and Arunji for explaining the bigamy act. Now I can understand the Yash Chopra movie Daag-73 where in the end Rajesh Khanna accepts and lives with both Sharmila and Rakhee. Spouse marring second time taking advantage of this “Not filing FIR law” by his/her life partner may be legal but so immoral. Well, that’s why they say, “prem andha hota hai” kyun ki aadmi apni naitikta bhool jata hai.
Thanks Derubalaji for explaining this by examples. I am yet to experience this bigamy either from my family or my freinds. (bhagwaan kare wo din kabhi na aaye) But like you have said someone must be prepared mentally with the current situation.

Khyatiji, may be some people that you know, might not showing their other side to their friends/relatives..but remember that one never know what goes on behind closed doors of other people’s life… true, right?
There is a saying in hindi ‘band mutthi lakh ki; khul gayi to khak ki’…samje na? lolzzz

Can always convert to Islam. Legal in India. Very few cases of bigamy in Hinduism. But some hindus would go and make a big deal abt it, cause they dont have guts to speak where they should 🙂
