Avinash Scrapwala is one of the “newer” contributors to the blog. He seems to have discovered the blog in june 2011 but decided to become a lyrics contributor only in late august 2012. His first lyrics contribution that appeared in the blog was Pyaar ka badla mujhe dekho kaisa mila (Ye Hai Zindagi)(1977). This song was a nice song containing the old world message of being content with one’s fate and staying humble despite becoming successful. If one looks at the lyrics contributions of Avinash Scrapwala, a good number of these songs are philosophical songs, inspirational songs, songs with a message etc. -feel good songs in brief that have a therapeutic effect on the listeners- what I also call “mental massage” songs. 🙂
Avinash Scrapwala was born in Akola (Maharashtra). People living in the radio era will remember that majority of farmaishes for songs in Radio Ceylon (later SLBC) used to come from Jhumri Tilaiyya. But places like Akola, Nanded, Jalna, Parbhani, Gondia (all in Maharashtra) as well as Bhilai, Rajnandgaon, Bhatapara (all in Chhattisgarh) were not far behind in sending farmaishes. 🙂 I am not sure if Avinash Scrapwala or some of his close acquaintances were also into sending farmaishes. 🙂
It turns out that Avinash Scrapwala was interested in writing articles from a young age. One of his articles in fact got published in 1980 when he was in the 8th standard ! The article was on Chetan Chauhan who had got dropped from the Indian test cricket team then. I and Raja remember Chetan Chauhan fondly. Chetan Chauhan, Sunil Gavaskar’s opening partner got selected again for the Australian and New Zealand tour in 1981, and he was in fact dropped once and for all despite doing better than Sunil Gavaskar in the tour. See, I (and Raja) also remember Chetan Chauhan, but it was Avinash Scrapwala (5-6 years younger than us) who felt strongly enough to raise his voice in protest and got his view known in print media. 🙂 There was no social media then, by the way. 🙂 This and his subsequent articles on cricket used to get published in a District level Marathi daily called ‘Dainik Shivshakti’ published from Akola- all these articles were published when he was still in school !
Kapildev has been his biggest idol in cricket. He has by now lost all interest in cricket though and I can see why. Even I am hardly the cricket fan now that I was till a few years ago.
Like all “normal” kids of those days, Avinash Scrapwala too was fond of listening to songs (and not news) on Radio. :). He would always keep the transistor near his pillow when he went to sleep (that was till 10th). He in fact does that even today whenever he gets a chance to do that. 🙂
His various jobs took him to places like Delhi, Rajasthan, UP, Haryana etc and now he is in Gujarat for the last ten years.
Despite being busy with his various jobs, he finds time for his hobbies which include buying & reading books, visiting historical places, to know about our diverse cultural practices and folk music. He loves to travel, listens to music, and observe people and their behavior.
His favorite authors are Premchand, Ranjit Desai and Acharya Chatursen. His favorite books are ‘Shreeman Yogi’ by Ranjit Desai and ‘Somnath’ by Acharya Chatursen.
As far as movies are concerned, he likes to watch films based on our culture, folk, literary works, and films on children and films that give a ‘message’. As for music, he prefers songs based on folk music.
Just like organisations have their quality policy, Avinash Scrapwala too has set a policy or vision for the society which reads- ‘For building a true environment- friendly, incorruptible, nationalist, patriotic, peaceful, positive, progressive, prosperous and a truly secular society’.
Very impressive indeed. How I hope that I too could have the discipline and drive to set such high standards for myself. In fact, if we all set such standards for ourself then there is no reason why the country will not become a better place to live.
He has two daughters and he is proud of them, which makes him an ideal Indian citizen. Incidentally I with a single girl child and proud of her also consider myself an Ideal Indian citizen. 🙂
As a lyrics contributor, he has sent me lots and lots of contributions, and many of them are yet to be posted. And they are all hand picked songs of high quality. So one can be rest assured that lots and lots of songs contributed by him will continue to appear in the blog. And as far as his guest posts are concerned, he has written some interesting articles in the past, and one that I remember the most was the one dealing with typewriter. 🙂
As mentioned earlier, he has sent lots and lots of lyrics to me that have yet to see the light of day. Here is one such song. This song is a rare ghazal sung by Hariharan. Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev. “Aayi Teri Yaad” (1980) is the name of the movie.

Thanks for your note on Avinash ji.
When I first read his name ‘ scrapwala ‘,I thought that he must be a Gujarati. After reading some of his studied comments,I got the confirmation that he is in Gujarat and very much a Gujarati.
Later when he sent an E Mail to me and spoke to me on Phone few times I learnt that he is originally a Maharashtrian,but due to his long stay and work,he has almost become a Gujarati.
This fact immediately connected me to him,for I too was a multi language man as I came from Hyderabad.
Your observation about his selection of Lyrics is very true. he likes Lyrics with a message which act as a massage to the mind. His comments are also very interesting to read. He seems to have a good knowledge of movies of his times.
I wish Avinash ji a very long association with the Blog and more fast and informative posts in the future.

Lovely intro, Atul.
I didn’t know Avinashji was also into cricket at one point in time – so much so that he wrote an article about Chetan Chauhan being dropped. That too, when he was only in the 8th standard. Getting articles published at such a young age is quite something – especially in those days when exposure and avenues were both limited.
I’ve always been impressed by Avinashji’s contributions here. Whether in the form of lyrics, or write-ups, or comments, he is very much involved here. He is also a big Sahir fan – that’s something we have in common. 🙂
All in all, am enjoying this journey towards the 10,000th song. The magical number is really close now. 🙂

I discovered this blog sometime around end 2008 or in early months of 2009. At that time i was not browsing it regularly.
My first comments on the blog came on 15th September 2009 on ‘kashti ka khamosh safar hai..’ (naturally a Sahir Saab song), i hv one more comment on it on Aug.10,2012. In between on 26.01.2012 I commented on ‘aawaaz do ham ek hain’ (NFS-Khayyam Saab)…
So, i hope once again Atul ji will correct the same as and when he gets a free time after these celebrations !

Though my birthplace is Akola (our ancestral home),we were living at Paras about 30 km from Akola. And if Atul ji could remember there was one regular person sending farmaishes to Radio Ceylon from here (i think his name was Mr.Sattiwaale/ or Mr.Tankhiwaale, do not remember it now, my Father could have told me that but he is no more). So those listening Radio Ceylon must be remembering this place ‘Vidyut Nagar Paras’, also i think there were many farmaishes from ‘Dhar'(MP) at that time. So, at that time i also meet this person to understand the procedure of sending the farmaishes and get that special Rubber stamp of Radio Ceylon address and tried few, but do not know if our name was announced any time.

Thanks again for introducing Avinashji. Like Arunji, I was also under the impression that he is Guju. Avinashbhai, saaru thayu ke Gujarati ma mein tamne nibandh na lakhyo. (Good that I did not write an essay to you in Gujarati). But if I remember right, you do have a webpage where you post your poems and articles in Eng, Hindi and Gujarati. If that’s true than YOU DO KNOW GUJARATI. 🙂

Khyati ji – thanks, and you can write me ‘nibandh’ in Gujarati, because I can read(I already read the whole newspaper and its ‘purtis’ too ) Gujarati and can write it with the help of ‘google’ and so here is what i wish to say;
હૂં છેલ્લા દસ વરસ થી કચ્છ માં છું. અને ગુજરાતી સાંભળું છું. મને ગુજરાતી આવડે છે પણ બોલવામાં સંકોચ થાય. મેં ગુજરાતી વાંચું શકું અને ગૂગલ ના મદદ થી લખું પણ શકું. હૂં અને મારા પરિવાર ના બધા સભ્યો દસ વરસ થી ‘કચ્છમિત્ર’ વાંચે છીએ.
