If there was a national season in India, it would probably be the monsoons. Across the country, the arrivals of rains is awaited and celebrated, not only traditional ways but also in very personal ways. Someone might have their mother making Adrak wali chai (ginger tea) and pakodas for them, while someone else might have a standing date with Bandra Bandstand. We all have some beautiful memories of rain that rerun in our heads when the first rains hit the dry soil wherever we are.
For me these memories are of the monsoons of 2007. Mumbai’s monsoons were a calamity that year. The rain descended, unleashed nature’s fury on the residents of the island city for three days. Though on an intellectual and empathic level I have the same picture of those events (that of a calamity), my memories of those rains are very fond and its the place I go back to everytime I see heavy rains.
Now I was in the crucial tenth standard then and I had made a new group of friends when I joined “coaching classes”. On a particularly rainy day, I was of course sent home from school in half a day with my uncle and I came home completely drenched and had just changed to dry clothes. Thats when my new friends came over and asked me if I feel like going and getting wet. My grandmother of course thought I was mad, but I readily agreed and rushed out (on grandmother’s advice wearing a windcheater, but in those kinds of rain, raincoats and umbrellas are completely useless).
We happily waded through the flooded banks of the Dahisar River, joking and playing, with just enough care to not be swept away in the current or drown in a pothole. Those hours were I think when this strong friendship found its rock. With the first secrets being shared, the first inside jokes being created and bonds being forged that hold to this day.
The group still remains; two guys, a girl and me, and we still can spend entire days just mapping the area with our feet. We are now grown up though and living in different cities and studying and working with entirely different schedules of life. But we still try (and manage thankfully) to meet for a few times every year. We of course don’t do anything concrete or “fun”, but somehow that never matters. Its the company that makes the moments.
And its this company that I remember everytime I witness the first heavy rains of the season like today it did in Gandhinagar. And these memories lead to others and then I am deluged in the memories those years of companionship running through my head. This deluge of memories is my celebration of the rain.
There is of course a song associated with these people in my life (which is the point of this post). A couple of months later in the classes’ Diwali party, these idiots of mine had danced (terribly, I must add) to “Mast Kalander” from the movie Heyy Babyy (2007). The song has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Sameer and Anvita Dutt Gopalan. The playback is by Shankar Mahadevan, Master Saleem and Rehan Khan. The song is picturised on Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Vidya Balan and the movie’s special appearance of Shahrukh Khan. Every time this song is played I can still view the comical yet sporting way my friends danced to this. So here is to all my friends who are with me and away from me ….. HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY
Song-Masti masti mast kalandar (Heyy Babyy)(2007) Singers-Shankar Mahadevan, Master Saleem, Rehan Khan, Sajid Khan, Lyrics-Sameer, MD-Shankar Ehsan Loy
Lyrics
dil da maamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar,
ho mast ae mast kalandar
ho dil da maamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar,
ho mast ae mast kalandar
one, two, three, four
dil da maamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar
ho masti masti kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
meri najar jo tujhpe padee toh
ban baitha teraa saedaayee
betabiyon ko raahat milee toh
door huyee meri tanhaayee
tere husn da
tere nur da
hai asar tere hi suroor da
mere haal se,
mere dard se,
too hai bekhabar
dil da mamla aaaaa
dil da maamla
hai dilbar
hun naa jor hai
iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil
ke andar
ho masti mast kalandar
dil da maamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar,
ho masti masti kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
masti, masti, masti, masti, mast kalandar
kalandar, kalandar, kalandar
mast kalandar
kalandar, kalandar, kalandar

teri ada mein jaadu hai jaadu
karta hai mujhko deewaana
meri tamanna kehtee hai mujhko
sirf mujhe hai tujhko paana
meree aarju
meree guftagu
too hee too hai bas meree justaju
kya bataaun tere bagair main kitna besabar
o hooooooo

hun naa jor hai
dil da maamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar,
ho mast ae mast kalandar
aaya main aaya leke mohabbat
anjaanon mujhko pehchaano
meree najar mein hai ik chehra
maano tum chaaho naa maano
meree chaahaten meree rahate,
badee manchalee meree hasrate
mere khwaab me koyee rat din
rehta humsafar
dil da mamla
dil da mamla hai dilbar,
hun naa jor hai iss dil par
khalbalee hai dil ke andar,
ho mast ae mast kalandar
mast, mast, mast, mast, mast kalandar
mast, mast, mast, mast, mast kalandar
mast, mast, mast, mast, mast kalandar
mast, mast, mast, mast, mast kalandar
kalandar, kalandar, kalandar
mast kalandar
kalandar, kalandar, kalandar

Peevesie,
Wonder remembrances – chai and pakodas, and sitting by the window, watching the falling rain. And of course, the downpour being so incessant that the schools have been called off, but never so daunting that one cannot slush it out in knee deep waters in the alleys, with friends.
“. . . woh baarish ka paani”.
Thanks for the memories, and the song.

Ah! The Diwali Dance parties of coaching classes! Long back i was attending this particular class which happened to be located on the third floor. One day being absent minded i started walking up whistling some bollywood song. Once i reached up they scolded me for this and threatened to call my parents in future if i didnt behave! HaHa! How the times have changed…
