Here is a song that firmly belongs to the category of “how come this song was not discussed before”. 🙂 This song is from “Guide” (1965), which was a musical extravaganza, among other things.
Outlook India, a weekly magazine had conducted a poll among a jury consisting of HFM bigwigs, namely Abhijeet, Adesh Srivastava, Alisha Chinai, Anu Malik, Ehsaan, Gulzar, Hariharan, Himesh Reshammiya, Jatin, Javed Akhtar, Kailash Kher, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Khayyam, Kumar Sanu, Lalit, Loy, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Prasoon Joshi,Rajesh Roshan, Sadhna Sargam, Sameer, Sandesh Shandilya, Shaan, Shankar, Shantanu Moitra,Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, and Talat Aziz. These H FM celebrities were asked to name their top ten songs from Hindi movies. When the songs were ranked in terms of votes polled, it turned out that the top twenty songs ranked by the above jury included as many as three songs from “Guide” (1965). No other movie had more than one song in the list. It means that “Guide” (1965) was regarded as the best HFM album.
This movie had ten songs in it. as many as eight songs from this movie have been discussed, including all the three songs voted as the best songs of all time. This leaves two more songs from “Guide” (1965) to be discussed in the blog. The song under discussion may not have made it to the above mentioned list, but to many music lovers, including me, this song is the most well known song from the movie in a movie that had great songs oozing out from every pore.
The lyrics of this song are with me for a long time. I am sure that the lyrics of this song were sent to me by more than one contributor, and I may have noted down the lyrics of this song myself as well. Peevesie’s mom was pressuring to get the remaining songs of “Guide” (1965) posted for quite a long time and she had left no internet stone unturned to get her way. Today (26 september 2014) is the birth anniversary of Dev Anand and this is as appropriate as occasion as any to get this song into the blog.
So here is this evergreen song from “Guide”(1965). it is sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata and it is picturised on Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.
Younger people who began watching Hindi movies much later may be used to seeing the heroine change her clothes many times in the course of a song, and they may wonder why Waheeda Rehman is seen in the same saari throughout the song. My daughter had once watched the picturisation of a Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz rain song and she had noticed the duo singing throughout the song in the same clothes and she had concluded that gareebi of India those days was the reason. India was even more Gareeb in 1965. And the lyrics of this song in fact explicitly advises Waheeda Rehman not to change her saari, even if others do:
badley duniya saari
tum na badalna 🙂
So, enjoy this timeless classic from this memorable movie on the occasion of Dev Saab’s birthday.

arre shaam jaa rahi hai
humko dhalte dhalte ae
samjha rahi hai
aati jaati saans jaane kabse gaa rahi hai
kahin beete na
O kahin beete na yeh raaten
kahin beete na yeh din
gaata rahe ae mera dil
tu hi meri ee manzil
haaye
kahin beete na yeh raaten
kahin beete na yeh din
kahin beete na yeh raaten
kahin beete na yeh din

Kanjoos Dev Anand. He cajoles Waheeda not to change her saari even though the ladies of India do so everyday. Poor Waheeda had to do with the old saari for how many…..

Release date mentioned by Google as 06/02/1965 seems to be wrong.I remember seeing it with all eagerness in April 1966 in Basant Talkies of Lucknow within few days of its release.I also remember listening to ‘Radio Programme’ on Guide on Radio Ceylone. This popular programme, anchored by Amin Sayani, was on Air probably from March 1966 onwards.
